📈Brazil is facing a public health crisis as #dengue cases have surged across the country, with a record 1.3 million cases reported nationwide since the start of 2024. The invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito is the primary vector: Brazilian health officials have warned that #ClimateChange has extended the mosquito’s territorial range and increased its proliferation. Urgent, coordinated action is needed to stem this public health threat, and Oxitec do Brasil colleagues have been working around the clock to deliver Friendly ™ mosquitoes to mitigate the spread of infected mosquitoes. Friendly™ Aedes aegypti carry a self-limiting gene that prevents their female offspring from surviving, reducing the population of biting mosquitoes. Reuters and Deutsche Welle have reported on Oxitec’s mission, interviewing Natalia Verza Ferreira. As Aedes aegypti mosquitoes invade new territories, innovative tools are essential to stay ahead of the fight against vector-borne diseases. A Peruvian research team led by Gabriel Carrasco at Cayetano Heredia University is using advanced technology like drones, AI models, and weather sensors to track and predict outbreaks of tropical diseases like malaria and dengue fever in the Amazon region. The team collects high-resolution images, environmental data, and mosquito monitoring to feed into AI models that can identify potential breeding grounds and forecast where outbreaks may occur. This allows targeted deployment of resources in areas with limited access to medicine and healthcare. To assess the impact of landscape changes from the Shire Valley Transformation Programme-SVTP (https://svtp.gov.mw/) and broader climate change on vector-borne diseases, we conducted a baseline epidemiological survey in Chikwawa. Mosquitos will plague you every hour of the day, no matter where you live, unless you take this action to address #climatechange. (insert action relevant to target audiences in different locations) How is that for a #marketing tagline for why YOU need to care about #climatechange? Successful #marketing makes issues directly relevant to the target audience. A large target audience detests and loathe mosquitos. Only a few scientific articles talk about how the insect world is changing, spreading disease further and faster because of climate change. We don't translate the research and make it relevant to the broader public. We lose the opportunity to make #climatechange personal, and deeply annoying....buzz, buzz, buzz, bite, itch, itch, itch. To successfully #market change. 1. Make it relevant. 2. Clearly state what action each person needs to take. (e.g. pressure elected representatives, how to protect themselves against mosquitos, how they can reduce emissions by following these 3 easy steps (tailored to location/audience) 3. Provide additional information to demonstrate the seriousness, the facts. - Mosquitos threaten the health of more people than any other creature on Earth. - Climate change has extended the range of disease-carrying mosquitos to places they have never been found before. Malaria, which has killed more people than any other disease in the course of human history, has now been found in Texas, Florida, and Maryland. Dengue has been found in Florida and France. - Mosquitos are highly adaptable and evolve more quickly to changing environmental conditions than humans can invent insecticides. 🚀 Exciting news! We’re launching a new program to build a solution for the world’s most #invasive mosquito, in partnership with Australia’s world-leading science agency #CSIRO. Using the same technology that we’ve proven against the world’s most important dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, we’re turning our attention on the next most important #dengue vector – and one of the worst nuisance biters - the notorious Asian tiger mosquito or Aedes albopictus. It’s already a global threat and - helped by climate change - it’s continuing to spread. In places like New York and southern Europe, it does pose a disease threat – but its aggressively daytime biting also means that people can’t enjoy time outdoors. It’s changing lifestyles. Across other parts of the world – including many countries in the Pacific and Oceania – it’s a major driver of outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya and other viral diseases. 🦟 If Aedes albopictus keeps spreading uncontrolled, scientific studies project that it’s capable of occupying regions home half of the world’s population: more than 6 billion people. 🌍 We’re planning to fight back - stay tuned for updates as the Friendly™ Aedes albopictus product takes shape. There is a need for global attention to relapsing fever group Borrelia (RFGB) species as it grows as a public health concern. Our new study analyzing 697 studies from 1874 to 2022 found 29 RFGB species identified globally, and 16 species known to infect humans, with 44.5% of reports showing human infections – a significant number of human infections caused by Borrelia recurrentis and Borrelia persica. 🔎 Borrelia miyamotoi, Borrelia lonestari, Borrelia crocidurae, and Borrelia hermsii are the most widely distributed, with Ixodes #ticks (hard ticks) as primary vectors, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere.
