With the global increase in cancer cases, there is an imperative need to heighten awareness. World Cancer Day, observed annually, directs attention to the burden of cancer and promotes awareness. This year's theme, "Close the care gap," a continuation from 2023, aims to address disparities in cancer care among sexual and gender minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals, and vulnerable populations in society. The sub-theme "2024: Together we challenge those in power" emphasizes that closing the care gap requires attention to be elevated to higher levels—literally. Let's contribute by educating one another, sharing vital information, assisting the vulnerable in accessing care when possible, and actively making change happen. Thanks to everyone who visited me at my two posters at the AACR Disparities meeting in Orlando. I'm sharing here the poster from our ENCLAVE study for anyone who missed it. It's been a great meeting this year; my highlights included the plenary session about Structural Racism; the plenary sesson about Anti-DEI legislation and what we can do to support equity despite these new laws spreading in states across the nation including Florida & Texas; the updates from the good work of the current administration & Cancer Moonshot to improve cancer equity; the focus on community engagement best practices; and the huge number of studies about the role of neighborhoods on outcomes across the cancer continuum, especially those that employed a cells-to-society framework. #AACRdisp23 #equity #cancer

Social relationships have an increased impact on the health and well-being of women. October is also breast cancer awareness month with the theme "Living beyond Breast Cancer." Women living in violent relationships are at a higher risk for delayed screening, advanced-stage cancer, lack of partner support during treatment, divorce, and reduced chance for survival. Created in 2000, #WorldCancerDay has grown into a positive movement for everyone, everywhere to unite under one voice to face one of our greatest challenges in history. Each year, hundreds of activities and events take place around the world, gathering communities, organisations and individuals in schools, businesses, hospitals, marketplaces, parks, community halls, places of worship - in the streets and online - acting as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in reducing the global impact of #Cancer. The theme of this year's World Cancer Day is "Close the Care Gap" which intends to draw attention to the fact that often those seeking care for cancer are hindered by income, education, geographical location and discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability and lifestyle.
