I was let go during maternity leave. Here goes a very personal story. 5 months ago I was about to enter maternity leave in one of the worst times for my former company. I didn’t have a contract protecting my license, I was a remote worker/contractor for a US based company. But my license was due to start, so, off I go. Shortly after, things went south. I received the message: I was out of work just days before having my baby. F**K. Mental ease left the room.  The process of looking for a job started 10 days after my c-section delivery. I was frightened. It was going to be difficult, challenging and even risky. But hey, it was the perfect moment to reflect on my career path. And I got to one conclusion: I wouldn’t accept anything less than working at a place aligned with my core values: equal amount of hard work and empathy. 3 months passed since that day and I can not be more thankful. I have an amazing support system at home, I am part of a rocketing startup, wake up motivated every day, and have the flexibility to enjoy motherhood, work in front of my husband and hit the gym once a day. My Advice: - When life kicks you down, don’t stay in the ground, react, and adapt quickly. - There’s another side of the tunnel if you walk towards it 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦. - Use ‘career self reflection’ periodically and as a bounce back tool. Follow my journey of how I will build a customer success function and strategize over onboarding, retention and advocacy, from scratch over the next 6 months. P.S. Whether you like it or not you are two different people, in different stages of life, who want totally different things. Don't for a moment think that they will stay with you for ever and your arrangement is a til death do us part type of relationship! There we said it. No matter how good your staff is ..."mtaachana tu" (You will one day go different ways) and imagine, it's okay. The sooner you accept this reality, the better for you. However, just because they will one day leave does not mean you fail to nurture a good working relationship with them. Do the best you can to support them in their role during this season of their career and you will have a bond for life. We all remember or are in touch with some of our bosses even though we left those stations long ago. So that said, how do you deal with a domestic staff who wants to leave? You may have stayed with them for months or years and now they give you the notice they want to move on. 1. Talk with them - Get to know their reasons for wanting to leave 2. Say thank you - Do not assume that just because they have been with you for long, they know you are grateful. Express your gratitude for their service. 3. Present options - Ask if there is anything you can do to make them stay. 4. Plan, plan, plan - If their reasons for leaving are beyond your control then start planning for the transition. Set a date for departure and list the things they need to do before they leave. They can even help in hiring and training your next staff. 5. Before I welcomed my little girl into the world, SomeComm was my pride and joy – my business baby, if you will. But when motherhood became my new reality, my career instantly shifted to second place. Here's a little secret I'll share: Last summer, my business took a quiet turn, and I found myself applying for a job. I landed an interview where I had to showcase my skills, facing individuals much younger than me. Walking out of that interview, I was optimistic, believing I had it in the bag. However, a few days later, the recruiter called, saying they liked me a lot but were worried hiring me was a "risk" in case I returned to freelancing. I couldn't help but think that it was just an excuse, that they saw my then 6-month-old baby as a hindrance, assuming I couldn't commit like a childless 25-year-old. The notion that women aren't discriminated against after having children is far from the truth. I'm grateful I didn't get that job because, post-maternity leave, I rebuilt SomeComm. I'm fortunate to have incredible clients who understand that being a mother doesn't mean I can't excel in my job. Sure, I may occasionally reschedule a meeting because my child needs me, and there were times when my journey was even more challenging due to my battle with PTSD after a traumatic experience surrounding my daughter's birth. However, that doesn't diminish my dedication or performance. Balancing career and motherhood has been incredibly challenging, but as my daughter approaches her second birthday, and with a client base that's doubled since summer 2022, I'm incredibly positive about the future of SomeComm and the exciting journey ahead. #workingmom #workingmums #motherhoodjourney #careergrowth #personaldevelopment #workingparents
