Adapting to a new culture - Part 1: 🌍 Exploration: My journey so far has been an exploration of understanding the values and systems within this new culture. 🏙️ Immersive Start: In the first few months, I delved into the heart of it, exploring the neighbourhood, different marketplaces, sports gatherings, festivals, birthday parties, evening get-togethers, and the vibrant nightlife at local pubs. 🤝 Respect for Personal Space: One striking observation has been the genuine respect people have for one another's personal space. The emphasis here is on offering space to others before seeking it for oneself. 🗣️ Language of Respect: It's common to hear the word "Sorry" more often than "Excuse me," reflecting the culture of putting others first. 🌟 Subcultures Unveiled: I've come to realize that within this broader culture, there are smaller, interconnected communities, each with its unique subculture that values equality and inclusivity. 🧐 Navigating Subcultures: It's a place where minding your own business is respected, but if you choose to engage with the community's subculture, you must learn to be relevant and know when and what to discuss. 📚 Local Knowledge: To do this, I've been following local sports, economics, and current affairs. 🥇 The Unifying Power of Sports: One remarkable realization has been the unifying power of sports. Regardless of background, sports bring people together with a common purpose. 🤝 Shared Passion: Many of the colleagues I've met here share a passion for sports, and it's fascinating to see how they plan their business and family affairs around sports events. ⏰ Respect for Time: Respecting others' time and maintaining a sharp focus during working hours has also been an eye-opener. People here are punctual and committed to their schedules; if they can't meet a commitment, they communicate well in advance. In this new cultural adventure, I've learned that respecting space, embracing subcultures, and valuing time are the cornerstones of a rich and harmonious life.
