Happy Monday, Editors Canada community! Editing can feel like a magic trick sometimes. It happens before your eyes, and yet, an adept editor can still leave you wondering, “How did they do it?” One of my favourite “tricks” is incorporating plain language while maintaining the author’s voice. Like any good magic trick, knowing the basics will allow you to play in the world of illusions. Having a strong foundation in plain language is a worthy tool for any editor to have up their sleeve. Translation is Nacl. You read that correct. In general it's not appreciated but when it's not there or not done in appropriate way, you feel the difference. Under or Over Nacl is hazardous to health. In the same way under translation or over translation kills content. Note: MT NaCl increases BP to Linguists most of the time. GSD 😉 #translation #content #translators #writers

🎞 Working Across Cultures in Media Production 🎥 I've been engaging in a unique project, working with an Australian media company and Chinese agencies on co-production comedy dramas. The experience has been a fascinating blend of cultures, narrative styles, and communication methods, making the process both challenging and immensely rewarding. 🔁 Navigating the Back and Forth: The project has been marked by countless discussions and revisions, often with little concrete progress. However, this back-and-forth has been a vital part of understanding and blending the distinct storytelling and communication styles of each culture. 🎭 Chinese Screenwriting Approach: Chinese screenwriters tend to focus on detailed, engaging initial scenes, creating vivid and captivating story openings. This method, while engaging, often leads to a reduction in narrative momentum in later acts. 🌌 Australian Screenwriting Style: In contrast, Australian counterparts often adopt a 'bird’s eye view', focusing first on the synopsis and overall story flow. This approach results in a more balanced and evenly-paced narrative throughout the script. 📽 Communication Styles: When it comes to meetings, the differences are equally pronounced. The Chinese team often starts with indirect discussions, gradually moving to the main points, reflecting a high-context communication style. The Australian team, on the other hand, prefers to cut straight to the chase, embodying a more direct and low-context style. 👥 My Role as a Cultural Facilitator: In this exciting but complex environment, my role extends beyond translation. It's about bridging cultural and conceptual gaps, ensuring effective communication, and fostering mutual understanding. Understanding these diverse narrative structures and communication styles has been key to navigating this collaborative landscape. 🔑 Key Takeaways: This experience has reinforced the importance of cultural sensitivity in international collaborations. Recognizing the unique strengths of each approach and finding a harmonious balance is essential for the success of such cross-cultural projects. 🎬 I look forward to continuing this enriching journey, learning more, and contributing to the creation of content that resonates across cultures! #litranslators #coproduction #chineselanguage #chineseculture #crossculturalcommunication #mediaproduction #screenwriting #translation #translationservices #translationagency #chinesemarket #litrendingtopics

Delighted to have started work with a new client this week who, in their style guide, talk about the importance of writing in plain English. Hurrah! Music to a copywriter's ears. So then imagine the eye-rolling when I came across copy using 'hotelification', 'fractional COO' and 'synergistically'. Not a client, I hasten to add, but someone who could do with a lesson in plain English. Don't get me wrong, I love a long word or a useful portmanteau. But in the right situation! Please join me in my wish for less obfuscation and greater clarity. What are your long-winded linguistic bugbears?
