Ever since experiencing my first Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco last year, I became fascinated by the high-speed world of #F1 and #motorsports. Yet what quickly became apparent to me was the gender imbalance in the industry and the resulting disconnect between the industry and the growing number of female fans, especially those that hope to join the motorsport workforce.
Thus, "Women in the Driver's Seat" was born—my capstone project for the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. After receiving positive feedback and encouragement from my professor and classmates regarding an earlier project focusing on the issue, I decided to do a deep dive into the intersection of motorsport, female representation, and the role of media.
MAJOR TAKEAWAYS:
✅ The key to maintaining and growing the female fanbase long-term?Recognize their purchasing power and create inclusive opportunities for them to actively engage with the sport, namely through merchandise, content, and experiences.
✅ There are more women working in the industry than you might expect, revealing a gap between reality and what is shown in the media. Space must be created on screens for women to tell their stories and be role models, because you can't be what you can't see.
✅ However, those women currently tend to work in more creative fields, with a gender imbalance more apparent in the STEM branches of motorsport. More work needs to be done to make the larger field of STEM more accessible and welcoming to women.
✅ While emerging initiatives (like FIA's Girls on Track) to introduce young women into the motorsport world are a great start, investment must also be funneled towards developing and retaining female talent to get them to decision-making, executive positions.
✅ The world is our oyster!
I especially thank Sierra Ashley & the team at Race Service, Tiggy Valen at F1R THE GIRLS Media, Lindsay Orridge, Emma Elsbecker, and Rachel Dawson for taking the time to share their thoughts, experiences, and insights with me. For women hoping to join the ranks, be sure to listen to / read the advice from these industry leaders at the end of the piece!
