- It can be tempting to add references to your resume, but including references can negatively affect your chances of receiving an interview. References are simply a list of contacts who will provide your potential employer with information about you and your work. This allows an employer to get another perspective on what working with a candidate is like. Adding references to your resume used to be common practice. However, this viewpoint has evolved over the past several years. With a few exceptions, you should never add references to your resume. References are typically contacted after your interviews have gone well and an employer is in the final process of giving you a job offer.
