From the course: Getting Started with Power BI

Install a sample app

- [Instructor] Before we can work with Power BI, we need to be able to load some data into Power BI. And in this course, we are going to work with a sample application that was provided by Microsoft. But there might be other things that you want to open. This Recommended list could include information provided by your organization, different apps that they have featured. If you've been working in Power BI for a while, you'll have items on your Recent list. By default, My Workspace, which you can also find right here, is listed, but this list will grow through use. To add the sample that we're going to use for this course, we're going to click the Apps button. And this is a change in the way that we were loading the sample data. As recently as a month ago, there was a Get Data button in the lower left-hand corner, but that's now been replaced. So we're clicking Apps to go to the Apps page, then clicking the Get Apps button. And this will take us to all of the apps that are available through your organization, whether they were built in your organization or your organization is simply curating them. And the app that you're looking for, when I go to Template Apps, it's in the upper left-hand corner right now, and there are several apps with similar names, so I want to be very clear what app we're using, and this app is the Microsoft Sample for Sales & Marketing. When I click this, it's going to open up a landing page so that we can see what this looks like. And look for the name, Microsoft Sample - Sales & Marketing. And then, below, you'll see an image of a dashboard or report from within this application. This is the app we want. Please click Get it Now. And AppSource, which is where we're browsing, it says, "Please confirm your identity to us," and it shows how you're logged in. That's correct. Assuming it is, click Get it Now. Now we return to Power BI, and Power BI says, "Do you want to allow me to install this? "I need your authorization." We click the Install button. In the upper right-hand corner, we have a banner that says Installing an App. This could take a little while, but it won't take all that long, because here we are all done. And I'm going to close this banner. This is the collection of apps that we have. It shows when the app was published to your Power BI service. It was built long before this, what version it is and so on. If you want to favorite it, you can. It's a reasonable thing to do with applications that you have been using for a while or plan to use for a while. And when you're done using an application as intensely, you can unfavorite to remove it from favorites. I'm going to go back home to show you how to get to this app now, because first, it lives right here. I favorited it and it got moved right here. I can also go to Favorites, and it's here again. Where this app actually lives is in a separate workspace, because that's how it installed. If I go to Workspaces, there's a Sales and Marketing Sample. And this takes me to the items that are inside of this particular app. The other way I can get to this app without needing to go to a workspace or click here is simply to go back to Apps, because here it is. And if I click to open this app from any of those places, this is what the app looks like. The app has a data set sitting underneath it that we don't see right now, but it's there and we can access it later. We have a dashboard here that is presented, and I know it's a dashboard because one of my commands at the top says Subscribe to Dashboard. And, then, below this we have Sales and Marketing Sample. If we click to expand it, we will see that this is a six-page report with pages like Market Share, YTD Category, and so on.
