- In Excel, unwanted spaces can cause huge problems, 2 particularly when you're trying to match up data. 3 We've got some data in column A on this worksheet 4 and you can see some of the space issues. 5 For example, in row four, too many spaces 6 between the comma and the first name. 7 Same thing true in row five, 8 we've got some leading spaces farther down the list. 9 In some cases, both issues. 10 If we were trying to match up these names with another list, 11 for example, the one we're seeing over in column H, 12 it's pretty apparent we're not going to get matches. 13 The first order of business typically is 14 to use a function called trim. 15 When that doesn't work, sometimes you'll be using clean. 16 Sometimes you might even use these together 17 and occasionally you might even need 18 to use a function called substitute. 19 They're all listed across row one here. 20 The trim function does three things. 21 It…
