- In sA very unusual function in Excel is called INDIRECT. And in the blue panel on this worksheet, you see how it's described. Returns the reference specified by a text string. It's one of these functions that probably doesn't mean a lot until you have the need to use it. And in the example that we're about to show you, I think it makes perfect sense. First of all, notice at the bottom of the screen a variety of different worksheets with our most populous states. And as I click the California tab for the California sheet, then Texas, I think immediately you recognize that all of these sheets have exactly the same layout.
