- In sA very unusual function in Excel is called INDIRECT. And in the blue panel on this worksheet, you see how it's described. Returns the reference specified by a text string. It's one of these functions that probably doesn't mean a lot until you have the need to use it. And in the example that we're about to show you, I think it makes perfect sense. First of all, notice at the bottom of the screen a variety of different worksheets with our most populous states. And as I click the California tab for the California sheet, then Texas, I think immediately you recognize that all of these sheets have exactly the same layout. And what we're most interested in is that total. And in each case, in each of these sheets here, it's in cell G7. Now, on the total sheet here, I've got a formula in cell B2.
