- While both security and governance are centered around protecting data, security is more focused on technical safeguards, whilst governance is more about the strategic and policy aspects of managing data responsibly, in short, the logic and policies behind how the technical aspects are used. A significant part of data governance is the data catalog. This is where metadata comes into play. Metadata is data about data, which includes information like when a piece of data was created, who created it, and how it's been used. In Snowflake, you can use something called the Information Schema to get all of this metadata. This schema gives you a detailed overview of all the data objects in your system, helping you understand and manage your data better. Next up is data lineage.
