Job Summary: Responsible for the design, fabrication, and control of production tooling for all wood working and tooling machines. Ensures that tooling inventory levels are accurate, tooling meets production requirements, and the new tooling concepts are reviewed, evaluated and incorporated where beneficial in cost reduction and improving safety. Responsible for tooling personnel and setting up tooling maintenance scheduling with minimal or no production down time.
Implement and ensure the execution of systems and procedures to monitor department performance regarding productivity, efficiency, quality improvement, and other duties as assigned
Design cutting tools and fixtures as required, including material selection, hard vs. soft tooling, level of precision required, etc.
Plan and schedule all in house tool orders, establishing labor estimates and capacity requirements for tool room
Ensure all manufacturing engineering equipment and machinery is properly maintained, and that employees are productive
Participates in the acquisition of equipment and establishing initial tooling needs and setting up first production runs
Implements operation procedures with employees and upper management
Plan and direct CNC program development, upgrade, and control to insure a continuous improvement in part quality and cycle time reduction. Insure configuration control of programs is established
Maintain open communications with personnel to address and overcome operating problems and difficulties, develop and maintain effective internal relationships
Interface with both production supervision and materials to insure availability of tooling
Supervise department personnel as per established company guidelines, which includes salary administration, hiring and termination when necessary, ensuring safety compliance, employee performance reviews and employee discipline.
Troubleshoot tooling-related methods problems when required, including analysis of rejections/yield problems and corrective actions as required
Ensure the ongoing development of processes, both in manufacturing engineering, and manufacturing to improve quality, reduce cost
Establish and meet departmental budgets and goals
Promote teamwork and open communications with all employees
Monitor individual performance focusing on continuous improvement, with an emphasis on quality
Design tooling and fixturing necessary for production
Perform all other tasks as directed by department management
Utilizes AutoCAD to create, edit, or modify drawings.
Knowledge, Skill and Experience:
Bachelor degree and/or completion of tooling school and apprenticeship with five (5) year related experience in a fast paced manufacturing environment
Prior experience leading a group of employees, including hiring, coaching and developing
Ability to effectively lead and motivate employees
Excellent communication and writing skills
Preferably bilingual English/Spanish
Must be able to read and create technical drawings, and to perform semi-complex math calculations, including trigonometry, with the ability to learn functions such as statistical process control
Working knowledge of MRP type manufacturing control systems, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Good manufacturing practices (GMP)
Excellent problem solving skills
Must have an in-depth familiarity with manufacturing processes in a machining environment, particularly with respect to cutting tool design and grinding, and CNC programming
Management and supervisor principles and practices
Computer literate
Must be able to travel outside of California
