We support the Area Studies Division at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the U.S. Department of State by delivering essential Area Studies training to State Department personnel, USG staff, and contractors. We are currently seeking a subject matter expert to serve as the Caribbean Course Coordinator.
Position Overview
The Caribbean Course Coordinator will play a vital role in preparing foreign affairs professionals for their responsibilities in or regarding the Caribbean region. The course covers the historical, cultural, political, and economic factors that shape modern Caribbean nations, including Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Belize, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, and The Bahamas. The course also explores the key issues affecting U.S.-Caribbean relations.

The course combines short lectures, class discussions, field trips, documentaries, debates, and oral presentations, supported by relevant readings. It is delivered multiple times throughout the year, either over 5 consecutive classroom days or 5 non-consecutive days. The coordinator must manage the course for its entire duration, whether delivered remotely or in person at FSI.
Key Responsibilities
Course Management: Organize and conduct the course remotely or in person, ensuring adherence to Area Studies instructional design and delivery standards.
Course Delivery: Make substantive lecture presentations, substitute for any scheduled speaker or activity as needed, and lead class discussions.
Facilitation: Deliver the course using dynamic facilitation techniques, including presentations, group exercises, and self-study materials.
Guest Speaker Coordination: Identify, manage, and invite qualified guest speakers from various fields, ensuring their approval by the Chair and coordinating any honorarium payments.
Material Maintenance: Ensure that course materials, including PowerPoint presentations, are up-to-date and consistent with FSI templates and branding.
Collaboration: Meet with the Area Studies Chair for planning and after-action reviews, coordinating with support staff to set up and resource the online classroom.
Evaluation Management: Ensure course evaluations are distributed and completed by students.
Qualifications
Educational Background: PhD preferred; Master's degree required.
Instructional Expertise: Proven experience in instructional design, professional training, or academic teaching for adult learners, with dynamic and interactive instruction approaches. Experience in online course design and delivery is an advantage.
Subject Matter Expertise: Recognized expert on the Caribbean region, evidenced by past teaching or professional training experience, university instruction, published works, or media appearances.
Independent Work: Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and effectively collaborate with diverse teams and State Department personnel.
Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) and advanced familiarity with online learning platforms, specifically Zoom.
Language Skills: Fluent English required; fluency in a local Caribbean language is desirable.
