It is no longer controversial to say that #AI will play a major role in wireless systems such as #6G (used to be taboo early in my career, glad we’re over it). However, despite considerable advances, the state-of-art still banks on conventional “statistical AI” methods that have many limitations. The recent GenAI bubble did not help much, as I posted previously, because LLMs are still “mostly” statistical in nature and less compatible with the real intelligence required for AI-native designs. Thus, the real question is: How can we make a substantial, meaningful leap in AI-native networks (and wireless systems generally)? We answer this question in our new work in which we propose the first, rigorous and holistic vision of artificial general intelligence (AGI)-native wireless networks: https://lnkd.in/eMMhfy9A We realized that the missing link toward creating next-generation AI could be the wireless network (e.g., sensing, building digital twins, etc.), while the missing link toward creating next-generation wireless systems is exploring next-generation AI, i.e., #AGI.  Bringing these two fields together could lead to breakthroughs in both domains, and this paper, the fruit of over 18 months of research (submitted in Jan. under our own self-review since then!), attempts to provide the first insight on how to do so. The cornerstone of our vision is enabling AI systems to acquire common sense as concretely defined on page 5, Fig. 4, (we are not using it as a “cool” term). There was a historical quest toward common sense in AI, and we believe it can be developed natively within a wireless network. This work naturally builds on the shoulder of giants, specifically the vision of Yann LeCun, but it overcomes some of its drawbacks by proposing a “telecom brain” architecture with three primary modules that build cognitive faculties and not mere language (like LLMs): -      Perception for building abstract representations through the network’s sensing abilities (think semantic++) -      World model (a term widely misused in our community) rigorously built in a way to capture the intuitive physics of the world. -  An action-planning module, responsible for autonomously executing network to actions. This is not supposed to be a rigid solution obviously, but, instead, it should be a “call to arms” for our community to look beyond myopic paths, and toward high-risk, high-reward research. The work is also not an island: It builds progressively on our established works (see first comment). We believe AGI-native networks, if well-designed, can genuinely disrupt how we build networks, and create a very different (and exciting) “G” (with unimaginable applications). We hope to work with everyone towards this. Iridium recently completed the acquisition of Satelles. While that is exciting, what is more exciting are the differences between STL vs. GPS. STL offers 1. Higher signal strength (works indoor) 2. Resistant to manipulation/spoofing 3. Requires only 1 satellite in view (GPS needs 4).

Our very own Joseph C. Davis took part in a panel at #DAC2024 this week titled “Blackout – Managing kW Power Budgets”. It was a great discussion exploring the challenges and innovations surrounding SoCs designed for compute-intensive workloads like AI training and inferencing. With power budgets growing geometrically, we explored how rigorous tools, flows, and methodologies are essential for managing these demands from both SoC and system perspectives. This comprehensive survey was written by me during the end of my Ph.D. In this article, we survey the potential/challenges of adopting mm-Wave/THz range frequencies for UAV-Swarm Networks specially air to air high mobility communication. We discuss various antenna arrays, beamforming, beam steering, alignment, adaptive beamwidth management to avoid link outage, and several open issues with potential solution. The paper is very compact and written in simple word, which may be useful for the initial researcher to trace a potential research gap. This paper was awarded as one of the best papers in the published conference proceedings.

Jin posited several reasons for the slow takeoff of 5G #mmwave, but as I showed at #ieee #WCNC last month, there are over 1 billion mmWave sockets in 5G #cellphones growing at 15% CAGR. The lack of industry’s understanding of power efficiency is one of the reasons this ramp isn’t faster, but #wastefactor will show the virtues of #millimeterwave #smallcells for better #sustainability and a much lower #carbonfootprint.
