California's processing tomato industry has been through a wild couple of years. With post-pandemic demand normalization now on the horizon, according to our specialty crop analyst, Matt Woolf, how will that affect growers' break-even yield in 2024? Matt shared his forecast and other key insights this month at a roundtable event hosted by American AgCredit and Terrain. According to Matt, the pandemic juiced demand during a time of restricted supply, leading to the highest price for processing tomatoes the industry had seen. However, he expects demand conditions to start normalizing now given: ◾ A more structural decline in per capita demand ◾ Challenges of competing in the export market One sign of demand softening is the recently announced grower price per conventional ton of $112.50, down from last year’s $138. Though the break-even yield can differ widely by operation, Matt's analysis using UC Davis cost studies and California Tomato Growers Association prices suggests the average break-even yield in 2024 is approximately 27% higher than it was last year. TRENDS IN INPUT COSTS FOR CORN AND SOYBEAN PRODUCTION IN ILLINOIS — by Nick Paulson, Gary Schnitkey and Carl Zulauf The costs of fertilizer, seed, and pesticide inputs have increased by 6-7% annually for corn and 4-6% annually for soybeans since the 2000 crop year. Input costs have, in general, followed patterns in commodity prices and farm returns. Fertilizers have been the most variable input cost, increasing more rapidly during the high income era from 2007 to 2013, returning to lower levels from 2014 to 2019, and then increasing to record levels through 2023. Seed costs experienced the most growth during the high income era which is also when the adoption of genetically engineered seed varieties on corn and soybean acres grew to their current levels. Pesticide costs generally increased more gradually from 2000 until 2020 but have increased more significantly in recent years as weed resistance and disease pressures have increased along with price increases associated with pandemic-related supply chain issues. Lower corn and soybean prices in 2024 will have producers seeking cost reductions. Some relief is expected for fertilizer costs due to lower prices but seed costs are expected to remain at 2023 levels and, with planting season underway, have likely already been fully realized. Pesticide costs may provide an opportunity for lower costs in 2024. However, lower costs will be realized only if lower pest pressures occur or farmers choose to reduce or forego applications during the growing season since prices generally remain at the higher levels seen in 2023. Purdue University's 2023 Applied Corn Research book is now available. The updated and detailed summary of applied research trials for corn production in Indiana is conducted under the direction of Dr. Dan Quinn, Purdue University Assistant Professor of Agronomy and Extension Corn Specialist. An Indiana Corn Marketing Council-supported trial examines corn yield response to different management practices and inputs. R1 foliar fungicide application, increased seeding rate, and intensive treatment led to increased corn grain yield. Another result from the trial showed that foliar disease presence like tar spot and gray leaf spot was reduced by R1 fungicide application, likely driving the observed yield response.
