What does "spatial" even mean and can we actually reproduce reality in a virtual space? I had a great conversation with Ethan Castro, PhD about how audio impacts the creation of dynamic spatial environments in virtual reality. "We need to find a way to get the real world to emulate a video game as much as possible, capturing all the fidelity and detail of the real world, and then put it into a video game engine. This involves capturing the physics and creating a translation or cloning process to achieve the same type of video game-like exploration experience." At EDGE Sound Research, we believe there are three layers that need to be aligned to make any real and virtual sound experience feel indistinguishable from each other: 1. The real world 2. The virtual world (game engine) 3. The reproduction environment (e.g., your living room). How NASA's Project Gemini Inspired Google’s AI Innovation The name "Gemini" for the project has a fascinating story rooted in space and collaboration. Initially called "Titan," the name was changed by Jeff Dean, Gemini’s co-technical lead, who wanted something more fitting. "Gemini" means "twins" in Latin and refers to the constellation named after the Greek mythological twins, Castor and Pollux. This name symbolizes duality and partnership, reflecting the project's nature. In April 2023, Google merged its DeepMind and Brain teams, who had been behind major AI breakthroughs, to form Google DeepMind. This union aimed to accelerate AI advancements by combining their talents and resources. Jeff saw the "twins" aspect of Gemini as a perfect metaphor for this collaboration. Additionally, the name draws inspiration from NASA's Project Gemini (1965-1968), which was crucial in the space race, bridging the Mercury and Apollo missions. Project Gemini's achievements, like the first U.S. spacewalk and spacecraft docking, mirrored the ambitious goals of developing large language models (LLMs). Jeff proposed "Gemini," and it quickly resonated with the team. "The name captured the monumental effort of training LLMs," says Oriol Vinyals, Gemini’s co-technical lead. Thus, "Gemini" symbolizes the collaboration of two top AI teams and the ambitious, pioneering spirit of space exploration.

I asked two questions on LI this week, with wildly different outcomes: 1. What's the hardest part about scaling robotics? 2. What's the easiest part, or the one that you overestimated? Question 1 had plenty of insightful answers and great discussion. Question 2? Not a single reply! Not surprising: robotics is just hard. Every problem is a hair-on-fire problem. Scaling robotics is even harder. Your hair is on fire AND now you're responsible for keeping back the flames from your customers. This is exactly where Tangram Vision lives: helping the best robotics companies extinguish those hair-on-fire problems so that their customers stay happy. I'll keep posting questions about this in the coming weeks. We may not all have solutions, but understanding the problems is always the first step to success. Robotics and AI will touch all aspects of life and society. This one “could” be a path in reducing or eliminating the herbicides used on crops. On the technical side, from the article, this is astounding. Who would have thought even 10 years ago GPUs would be utilized in this manner. “Powered by 24 NVIDIA GPUs, Carbon Robotics’ vehicles use deep-learning-based computer vision models to autonomously identify and eliminate weeds via CO2 lasers. LaserWeeder, as the product is called, processes 4.7 million high-resolution images per hour, zapping 5,000 weeds per minute, according to the company. To date, its dataset includes 25 million labeled plants and more than 30,000 crop and weed models” #AI #agritech #robotics #nvidia

#AWE 2024 Thoughts Here are my five takeaways: 1. Qualcomm's Dominance: They are so deeply ingrained in the XR space, it’s impressive to see how they continue to push XR hardware. 2. Shift from Custom to Platform: There’s a noticeable shift in the industry from custom solutions to more standardized platforms. 3. Improved Talks: The talks this year were better. There was less focus on the metaverse hype and more on actual deployments and practical use cases, which was refreshing. 4. Demographic Changes: There seems to be a trend away from consumer/influencer XR (they are now AI experts). The gap between sponsors and exhibitors and the audience is still pretty deep however. AWE needs to do a better job of getting the right audience in front of the companies buying booths. 5. Venue and Food: The venue in Long Beach is definitely better than Santa Clara but Santa Clara is a better city. What happened to Long Beach... does nobody live there? See you next year 👋

Got a chance to connect with a great fellow from NVEnergy last week University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The number of data centers in and going up in Las Vegas was a big surprise. The amount of power being sent to those data centers was an even bigger surprise. 3 Sustainability thoughts came to mind: 1. Water is going into cooling - considering its proximity to limited sources of water that are used up river for farming and locally for population\growth. 2. Power from NatGas vs Coal vs Solar & Hydro - 56% - 6% -37% (yes they're off by 1% - https://lnkd.in/gyeHxmR3) 3. Transformers are specifically very useful for AI applications that handle a sequence of data – such as a string of text. Handling of sequential data poses additional challenges to neural network architectures because past data in the sequence may have an impact on the processing of data later in the sequence. To handle the challenges of sequential data, typically a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) has been used. RNNs differ from standard feedforward neural networks, in that they process data sequentially, utilizing information regarding the previous input. This gives RNNs a type of memory about past inputs, making them useful for handling sequential data such as text."
