  • This year marks the 71st anniversary of the Korean War. On this day, the Korean Armistice was signed, signaling the end of the war. We want to take a moment to remember, honor, and give our thanks to the servicemen who made sacrifices. This photo shows American Marines marching down a road known as “Nightmare Alley” and it was taken by David Douglas Duncan, a renowned documentary photographer. • Today in 1897, Amelia Earhart was born. We celebrate her record-breaking achievements in aviation today and every day. Not only was she the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo, she was also an entrepreneur owning a fashion business, and an aviation editor at Cosmopolitan Magazine amongst other things. Her life dramatically changed the day she left to fly around the world with navigator Fred Noonan. They only had 7,000 miles left when her aircraft lost connection near the Howland Islands in July 1937. Recently, Deep Sea Vision, says they found Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10-E using sonar. It’s presumed to be about 100 miles off of the Howland Islands. Deep Sea Vision said its 16-member crew used an advanced underwater drone to scan more than 5,200 square miles of ocean floor in search of the aircraft. What do you think about this image? Is that Earhart’s plane? #ameliaearhartday #wingsmuseum #wingsovertherockies #aviation #femalepilot #womeninaviation #ameliaearhart #mystery #pilot

  • Featured Aircraft of July! 🧡 The Skyote is a single-engine, single-seat sport biplane that has some really cool features! Here are some quick facts that you might not know about the Skyote! 🐺 The drawings of the building plans were originally sold at $275. As of August 2020, they are sold at $595. 🐺 The plane design combines the look of the classic Rose Parakeet with the handling and agility of the Bucker Jungmeister. 🐺 Pete Bartoe (the original designer) withdrew Skyote plans from the market in 1986. Check it out when you visit us next! #wingsmuseum #wingsovertherockies #skyote #aerospace #aviation #aviationdaily #aircraft #didyouknow #history

  • 🌕 APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING 🌕 This year marks the 55th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and to celebrate, we are shining light on the story of the American spacecraft and its fearless crew. Dedication to aviation and the stars were a part of the Astronaut's DNA. Neil A. Armstrong served as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin was an engineer and fighter pilot in the Korean War and Michael Collins served as a fighter pilot and test pilot in the U.S. Air Force. It was a bold decision for both NASA and the pilots to head into space but it propelled mankind into the future. Photo Captions - Photo one shows three astronauts as the prime crew of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. Left to right, are Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, command module pilot; and Buzz Aldrin, lunar module pilot. Photo two shows Apollo 11 crew members (left to right) Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, wearing space suits, leaving the elevator after descending from the top of the launch tower. The three had just completed participation in the countdown demonstration test for the upcoming Apollo 11 mission. Photo three shows the 363-foot tall, 6,400,000-pound rocket launching from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida via the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). Photo four shows Buzz Aldrin as he takes his first step onto the surface of the Moon. Photo five shows the flag of the United States, deployed on the surface of the moon, dominates this photograph taken from inside the Lunar Module (LM). The footprints of astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. stand out very clearly. Photo six shows the Lunar Module (LM) making its docking approach to the CSM. Photo seven shows Vice President Spiro Agnew (right center) and former President Lyndon Johnson (left center) viewing the liftoff of Apollo 11 from the stands located at the Kennedy Space Center VIP viewing site. Photo eight shows the View of the Mission Control Center celebrating the conclusion of the Apollo 11 mission. When they returned home, they were quarantined in case they were accompanied by lunar microorganisms. During this time, they conducted debriefs, wrote their pilot reports, and even celebrated Armstrong’s 39th birthday. Nasa said in an article, “To a question about whether there was any time while walking on the Moon when they felt spellbound by the experience, Armstrong replied, “About 2½ hours,” the duration of the spacewalk. To another question about how their preparations for their upcoming tours compared to the actual mission, Armstrong replied perhaps somewhat presciently, “It’s certainly the part we’re least prepared to handle.”” At the museum, we are lucky to get to see some lunar artifacts! From newspaper clippings to lunar aircraft we get a little blast from the past. Check it out today. Photos: NASA #apollo11#wingsmuseum #wingsovertherockies #airandspace #nasa
