The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state's roads, bridges and tunnels. And, through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it provides funding for airports, seaports, rail and public transportation. Virginia has one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the country, covering 57,867 miles of state-maintained roadways. Our mission is to plan, deliver, operate and maintain a transportation system that is safe, enables easy movement of people and goods, enhances the economy and improves our quality of life. ℹ Since January 2023, VDOT's Safety Service Patrol has dealt with 66 crashes, resulting in injuries to three workers and one fatality. This National Roadside Safety Awareness Month, prioritize safety with these tips from the Virginia Department of Transportation: 🚨 Use flashers and be cautious when exiting on busy highways.
