“As Virginia led the movement toward independence, Virginia is once again leading the semi-quincentennial movement," VA250 National Honorary Chair Carly Fiorina said in her keynote address. "As the Alexandrians who stood here 250 years ago resolved, let us also resolve that through our choices and through our actions, we can start a movement, we can build a more perfect union.”

Patriots gathered in Hanover County to mark the 250th anniversary of the Hanover Resolves, which called for a continued boycott of British goods, no taxation without representation, and abolishment of the African slave trade, among other things. The Resolves of Hanover played a pivotal role leading to the American Revolution and the founding of our nation. The event included a history talk at Hanover Tavern Restaurant and Pub and an enlightening tour that highlighted the road to religious freedom in Hanover, with a significant stop at Historic Polegreen Church Fnd where Patrick Henry drew inspiration from the sermons of Rev. Samuel Davies for his famous "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech.

#OnThisDay 250 years ago, the citizens of Hanover County met at the courthouse to elect representatives for the upcoming First Virginia Convention in Williamsburg. Chosen were Patrick Henry and John Syme. The Hanover Resolves declared “We are freemen; we have a right to be so, and to enjoy all the privileges and immunities of our fellow-subjects in England.” Today, Hanover County VA250 is holding an unforgettable day of commemoration for this event with historical reenactments, tours, demonstrations, and celebration. VA250 National Honorary Chair Carly Fiorina headlined a powerful commemoration of the Fairfax Resolves' 250th anniversary. These pivotal documents, penned by George Washington and George Mason, sparked colonial resistance against British rule. Other key speakers included VA250 commission member and Executive Director of Gunston Hall Plantation Scott Stroh and Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson. The event culminated in the unveiling of a new Road to Revolution historical marker, funded in part by a VA250 grant. This marker will educate visitors about the Resolves' significance in shaping American independence.

#OnThisDay, 250 years ago, two more counties joined the protest against the British. In York County, future Governor of Virginia Thomas Nelson Jr. gave a speech encouraging citizens to protest the British crown and its policies and thus, the York County Resolves were passed. In Fairfax County, resolves written by George Washington and George Mason were adopted at a Fairfax County convention chaired by Mr. Washington himself. These resolves clearly stated the American claims to equal rights under the British constitution. Both of these resolves were more bricks in the foundation towards revolution. 📷 Fairfax Resolves - Library of Congress York County, Virginia Visit Fairfax (Fairfax County, VA) George Washington's Mount Vernon Gunston Hall Plantation #va250 #yorktownresolves #fairfaxresolves #America250 #america250va #americanrevolution #revolutionarywar
