Design System Migration Fun. We recently moved a large multi-brand design system from Sketch to Figma and I want to share some advice on the experience. 1. Plan, plan and plan some more. Just like any design endeavour, you need to understand the end user of your design system. It’s not just a case of replicating each component in Figma like it was in Sketch. There should be a thorough discovery and planning stage to make sure you don’t end up digging yourself into a hole. 2. Convention may not always be the best approach. I have found that the conventional approach you’ll find online to some things design system related are not always the best approach. There are no right or wrong answers per se. You’ll most likely have to experiment to see what works and what doesn’t. Setting up a small-scale proof of concept for your system in Figma is a good way to get your hands dirty quickly. 3. Collaboration and Review If you have multiple designers collaborating on building components, you’ll need to have an agreed-upon approach and regular reviews. Each contributor should be using the same naming conventions, auto-layout structure, token application, etc etc. Schedule regular meetings with all designers to look at how things are being built. It’ll save you a lot of headaches down the line!
