The start-up world is drowning in tech debt, the ruthless enemy that torments 86% of companies ( Foundry).    📉Developers spend 42% of their work week dealing with technical debt ( CodeScene ) ⌛The average organization wastes 23%-42% of their development time on technical debt (Forbes) 💰20% of new product budgets get spent on tech debt remediation ( McKinsey & Company) Howl was no exception. For us, it was often a blocker to innovation. So what did we do? We started from zero and rebuilt. Crazy? Bold? You tell us. We are going into H2, tech debt free and in a private beta of our new platform! You might be wondering what drove this change, how we pulled it off, and who spearheaded this gargantuan effort (while also questioning if we made the right decision)... Well, it all began with our Principal Engineer, JR Razmus. His vision and leadership were instrumental in this transformation. In his insightful account, JR pulls back the curtain on Howl's journey and teases what's in store for us. Stay tuned for more details on what we moved to and our new stack in Part 2 of this series. We’ll also be unveiling more about our new platform next week!! 😉👀 And in the meantime…If you've been through your own tech transformation, we want to hear from you. Share your battle scars, your hopes, your hard-earned wisdom below. #techtransformation #technology #startups #techdebt #innovation

Principal Software Engineer at Howl (formerly Narrativ)

So... we just threw out our company's entire tech stack. For real. The servers, the languages, the patterns, UI, even "how" code gets flung places. Everything. In this little blurb of an article I'm going to tell you how Howl actually got away with it - scrapping the entire core technology of a tech company - and lived to see another day. "Lived" is a bit of a misnomer here; Howl is - to quote one of my favorite designers - "buttery" now. Stuff just flys.

Hey Linkedin, We wanted to share a quick update regarding the Senior Brand Partnerships Director role: 📋 We've reviewed all apps (over 500) and have narrowed it down to ~20 folks we feel are highly qualified. 📞 We are in the process of reaching out and setting up PS1's with those in that cohort. 🔜 If you applied and havent heard back via Greenhouse, our automated system, you should be getting an update within the next 24-48 hours Please note, we can only consider US based applicants and are prioritizing those that have direct experience in affiliate, enterprise account management and SaaS (and especially those well versed in the enterprise commerce creator ecosystem). We will continue to accept applications, so if you feel well suited, don't hesitate to apply :) Thank you all for your messages, apps and shares! Happy Tuesday!

Our founder Li Haslett Chen spoke to Cynthia Corsetti of Authority Magazine & Medium on the innovative approaches we're taking to disrupt the industries. "At Howl, “Wow” means being customer driven and building product thoughtfully through the marriage of form and function. “Wow” means we’re never subordinating the felt experience to the function. We have to believe that beauty (ease, power, yumminess) makes things easier, it’s not an accessory. In the moment it can feel like you’re sacrificing speed. But over time, trust in “Wow” is the difference between excellent and mediocre." Check it out!

"Howl is leading this and doing more than most." We agree, Jessica Turner! We love to hear first hand from Creators how bonuses are motivating them to drive more revenue than ever with the brands they love. Brands on Howl (including Nordstrom, Nike, and Tory Burch) use our technology to launch automated sales-based bonus opportunities and the results speak for themselves, with Creators like Jessica driving more orders than ever with performance-driven goals that are win-win.

If you are a brand with an affiliate marketing strategy, my recommendation for 2024 is to add bonuses to your mix. Here's a great example why: This year for Q4 Target created a bonus program within impact.com and Howl. The highest tier was a $10,000 bonus for $100k in sales. (Howl's bonus offering was for all affiliate partners, but for my business, I focused on Target.) This motivated me (and many other affiliates) to become laser focused on selling at Target, and the numbers speak for themselves. In Q4 2022 I had 1,530 orders for Target with LTK. (LTK doesn't share the revenue its affiliates generate, which is a post about transparency for another day.) In Q4 2023 I had 4,567 orders for Target with Impact and Howl (yes, I participated in both to maximize my bonus opportunities.) Total revenue that I generated for Target in Q4 was nearly $300k. Now, could Target have simply increased its commission rate and achieved the same results? I don't think so. I think what makes bonuses compelling to affiliates is the gamification of it. Also, Target (and many other big box stores) has a variety of commission rates based on category. The bonuses reward on ALL categories, which is great when an affiliate wants to promote something that typically has a low or 0 commission rate, like gift cards and technology. I'm seeing more affiliate programs roll out bonus programs with some affiliate management companies. Howl is leading this and doing more than most. I'm currently participating in several with great brands like Nike and Nordstrom. Cactus Media also does some bonus incentives, usually with Amazon gift cards. Mavely offers monthly bonuses across all brands, which is compelling for some affiliates, but a different strategy than what I am discussing here. Curious your thoughts--- Brands/agencies/marketers, are you considering bonuses as part of your strategy? Influencers/creators, are you motivated by bonuses?
