Story time! Let’s talk Chicago’s Pedway system. The existing terrazzo floor and structural concrete at the 69 W. Washington pedway had major water issues, so the owners opted to gut it all and start anew. Providing our crew with a new substrate, our team came into prep, prime, seal, and poured 2” of cement backfill to meet the exact elevations. Being accessible only by stairs, the project certainly had its difficulties. With thorough floor preparation contributing not only to the immediate success of this installation, but it was necessary to safeguard the longevity of the finished terrazzo floor. The owners chose to keep the initial 2’ x 3’ strip patterns from the original design using ¼” zinc strips and re-installed the salvaged wayfinding compass logo into the new terrazzo floor, topping off this project with a 200-grit finish. This system of 67 underground tunnels and overhead bridges links more than 40 blocks in the Central Business District, covering roughly five miles: right in the heart of the city.
