A few weeks ago, Mars science leaders and Associates attended the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings on the picturesque island of Lindau by Lake Constance in Germany. For more than a decade, Mars, Incorporated has proudly supported this prestigious event, enabling 15 emerging scientists (Mars Fellows) from around the globe to attend and engage with Nobel Prize winners each year. This year held a special significance as our Mars Chief Science Officer, Dr. Abigail Stevenson had the honor of participating in a panel discussion alongside Ona Ambrozaite, an exceptional PhD student at Johns Hopkins University, and Nobel Prize winner, Prof. George Smoot. The panel focused on how physicists are pioneering new approaches to understanding complex systems, a topic that resonates deeply with our commitment to scientific innovation. The Lindau Meetings are a vital annual gathering, uniting scientists from diverse disciplines, geographies and cultures. The global seafood sector is vital to food security, nutrition and income for people around the world. More than 3 billion people relying on seafood for their livelihoods. For over a decade, Mars and the World Wildlife Fund have worked together to drive positive impact, improving environmental and social practices in the fishing industry whilst promoting biodiversity and protecting endangered species. This week, our Petcare Chief Sustainability Officer, Marika McCauley Sine, sat down with WWF on their ‘Breaking Waves’ podcast to discuss our role as a major private sector actor in the ocean conservation space, as well as some of the challenges organizations face and how businesses can engage with consumers to become a part of their sustainability journey. During the episode, Marika highlighted the importance of cross sector collaboration for organizations looking to tackle systemic challenges in sustainability that stretch across sectors. Initiatives, such as the Fisheries Improvement Fund (FIF) launched by Mars in partnership with WWF and Finance Earth to catalyze and scale a $100 million investment in fisheries improvement by 2040 are essential in bringing together stakeholders across the supply chain to address environmental and social challenges facing the fishing industry. With over 320 dedicated Associates, the site is proud to make 10 million chocolate bars a day, reaching over 30 markets worldwide. We are investing €40 million to modernize the factory, boost efficiency and improve sustainability.
