"When clients are not institutionalized and sticky with the firm, sometimes the only way a more junior partner can fast-track their compensation is by moving to another firm and taking full credit as the relationship partner" says Michael Allen, CEO of Lateral Link. This dynamic creates a high turnover rate among junior partners, who seek better opportunities and recognition elsewhere, often leading to significant lateral movement within the industry. For more expert insights from Michael Allen, follow him on LinkedIn. #LateralLink #LegalIndustryInsights #PartnerMovement
As most Am Law 200 law firms apportion some sort of credit for originating clients as well as matters, and compensation is very much contingent on how these credits are assigned, there is tension regarding when a more senior partner should dilute his or her credit to allocate it to a more junior partner who is slowly becoming the more relevant relationship partner (at least for the matter credit). When clients are not institutionalized and sticky with the firm, sometimes the only way a more junior partner can fast-track his or her compensation is by moving to another firm and taking full credit as the relationship partner. That is why we are seeing so much movement among partners around twenty years out of law school. On the other hand, given the declining number of lifers at law firms, the flip side of this trend is that more senior partners may view junior attorneys as potential threats to their business over time rather than someone they should mentor along the way. Firms such as K&E, Paul Weiss, Wachtell, and Cravath, just to name a few, are more impervious to losing junior partners as they have stronger institutional, marquee clients that are sticky with the firm. These firms are less threatened by junior, homegrown partners lateraling to other firms and taking with them top clients such as KKR, Blackstone, TPG, Apollo, Carlyle, and the like. That is not the situation for firms and partners representing middle-market clients who are less sticky with the firm and more sticky to the relationship partner. So, we’d expect to see more lateral movement for firms in the second half of the Am Law 200 than at the top of the A-list. #amlaw200 #NALP

New Policy Alert: Kirkland's approach to departing equity partners' compensation raises industry discussion. "Kirkland’s new policy increases the exit cost for the firm’s existing partners, but given the firm’s profits per partner hovers around $8mm, Kirkland is taking a step in the right direction to stash cash to reward loyalty as well as to attract lateral partners. It is a tough market to attract lateral partner talent and we expect to see Kirkland to continue to succeed at the highest level", says CEO of Lateral Link, Michael Allen.
