Licensing Expo China, which took place in Shanghai last week, was a showcase of local and international brands spanning film, comics, games, museums, and more. Art galleries and museums were a focus at the event, with a particular spotlight on lifestyle products. The flat birth rates being reported globally, and their effect on a number of categories, was another a topic of discussion at the trade show. And location-based entertainment continues to be an area of interest, with Virtual Reality offerings growing in popularity.

The Lead Summit took place in New York last week, bringing together experts in retail and brand licensing. Appealing to Gen Z consumers was a major area of focus, with panels examining the importance of experiential retail, how to take advantage of the shortened trend cycles on TikTok, the ways artificial intelligence can strengthen search features and support online purchases, and how licensing and collaborations can build brand equity.

Mall operators are shopping for location-based entertainment (LBE) offerings to replace the department stores that previously served as brick-and-mortar anchors. The more than 100,000-square-foot immersive experience Netflix House will replace a former Belk department store at the Galleria Dallas, for example, and the 20,000-square-foot Planet Playskool family entertainment center was recently opened at the Westfield Garden State Plaza inside a former J.C. Penney department store. This infusion of LBE comes as mall operators thin their ranks, sharpening their focus on top-performing locations with licensed experiences that can fill large swaths of space.
