About us

The Family Online Safety Institute is an international, non-profit organization which works to make the online world safer for kids and their families. FOSI convenes leaders in industry, government and the non-profit sectors to collaborate and innovate new solutions and policies in the field of online safety. FOSI believes in a bottom-up, multi-stakeholder approach that is evidence-based and empowering. While acknowledging the potential for risks online, we also embrace the positive and enriching use of digital technology in all its forms, which has lead to a foundation for our mission and priorities: enlightened public policy, industry best practice and good digital parenting. FOSI works on a range of specialized initiatives dedicated to issues in online safety, as well as the wider social and cultural effects that technology has on families and young people. We offer A Platform for Good, a project designed to help parents, teachers, and teens to find educational resources and encourage them to connect to the great number of ways that the Internet is used positively. FOSI also hosts free resources such as the Global Resource and Information Directory (GRID), a free, comprehensive portal that monitors, tracks and provides commentary on the efforts of countries around the world. As a top convener in the field, FOSI holds a large-scale annual conference in Washington, DC each year, as well as an annual European forum. Through guidance from our thirty-strong industry membership and an attuned perception to the state of global online safety, we also hold a number of roundtable or forum discussions regionally around the world, and create space for discussion around relevant policy and legislative developments. One of the foundational organizing principles of our #InspiredInternet Pledge is collaboration. We know that no one person, organization, company, or even industry can address the challenge of youth and family digital wellbeing on their own — it will take partnership and shared creativity to design a healthier and safer digital experience in an effective and lasting way. As part of our commitment to openness, and our desire to help accelerate the pace of change, we are launching a new blog series we're calling Fellow Travelers, featuring colleagues from around the world who focus on aspects of digital wellbeing from a different perspective than ours at the Digital Wellness Lab. Our goal? To amplify their work, share their expertise, and deepen solution-focused collaboration across organizations. First up is Alanna Powers, Research and Program Specialist at Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) (an Inspired Internet Pledge Advisor). In this insightful interview, Alanna shares what she’s learned in her work, along with some thoughts on how to make tech healthy, safe, and fun for young people. Her recommendations include ideas for parents, kids, and industry. Learn more about Alanna, FOSI, and get Alanna's recommendations at: https://ow.ly/qC9x50SyNbZ
