Kelsey Hightower learns to cook 🍳 The first time he learned to cook was one of those Thanksgiving meals where you make one of the dishes. They said, "Hey, you got the macaroni and cheese this year!” And, you know, lots of people look forward to the macaroni and cheese. For some people, that's all they eat. You don’t want to mess it up. If you do a good job, everyone's smiling at you. Kelsey says that when you’re creating software, it’s similar: You want to do a good job, but you need to know who you’re cooking for. When you know your audience and make something for them with love and emotion, they can tell. You don’t want to be that person who says I'm just going to microwave 50 macaroni and cheese cups. Just add water, mix it up, and bring cups for Thanksgiving! Problem: Developers having trouble embracing innovation and change. Solution: Listen to Kelsey Hightower He says, let's think about people at different levels of their careers when Docker comes out with their new technology. (edited for brevity from the original interview) 🤓 If you're junior in your career, you have no reference point. All you know is that a lot of people are really excited about something. Let's say you're still in college, six months away from graduating, and you're looking at all the news postings about what's going on. What industry are you about to walk into? You might decide: I want to be a Docker system administrator, or I want to be a Docker developer. 😎 If you’ve been working in the industry for five or so years, you probably have an approach to solving some of the problems that Docker solves. You likely have experience with other tools to do that. So you look at this Docker thing and wonder how it is different from what I'm currently doing? At this stage in your career, you can at least evaluate whether you need it or not. The takeaway: If you're inflexible, you'll dismiss Docker for a decade. You'll say, ah, it needs to be production-ready. Look at all the features that it's missing. I'll just wait. If you’re more experienced and flexible, you will ask good questions like, what problems is it trying to solve? You’ll look at Docker because you already have a mental roadmap. You’ll look at Docker and think: Ooh, that's what I've been thinking about, and it's finally here. Why do you work? Most of us would answer, “Because I need to pay for things.” Kelsey Hightower's retirement at 42 came after a life driven by learning how to work and earning the title of Distinguished Engineer at Google. On the latest CRAFTED., Kelsey tells host Dan Blumberg how he's ready to spend the rest of his life learning how to live.
