    𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 WSJ recently ran a story about the ‘Coordination Tax’ in companies - the communication overhead that comes from growing a company, in turn hampering future growth. They found that the amount of time people spend in meetings at work is growing every year. It’s gotten to the point that we now spend more time talking about work and “aligning” with others than doing work itself. This tax limits how fast or large a company can grow. It affects its ability to adapt to new information, technology, competitors, or market changes, and slowly chips away at its velocity of product and customer development. Many teams have resigned themselves to this phenomenon as if it were an unchangeable fact of nature. It’s partly because they think this is an industry-wide problem that affects them and their competitors alike, and partly because they think the problem is too deep-seated and requires too large an organizational change to improve things. I’m optimistic that AI will play a major role in addressing this problem. It will significantly reduce the time we spend in pointless internal communication, jumping on unnecessary meetings, answering repetitive questions, waiting for others to get back to us with answers, and getting people on the same page. This, in turn, will allow the teams that adopt it earlier to grow faster and bigger without facing the traditional overhead that their slow-to-adopt counterparts might. How? Imagine having an expert that learns from everyone and everything that has ever happened at the company - all the wikis, customer calls, support tickets, code changes, and meeting notes, and lets everyone in the team directly interact with it to get answers to their questions, brainstorm new ideas, and resolve their issues. In computing geek terms, you’ve now reduced the coordination tax from roughly O(N^2), which scales quadratically as you grow the team, to O(1), which remains constant over time! We’re already seeing compelling signs of this at Dashworks: - Podium reduced the number of questions that their SMEs had to answer internally by 87.8%, saving a total of 96.2% of time that would have been spent in internal Q/A. - HeyGen reduced internal support and sales questions that required answers from the product and engineering team by 40%. - Cognician’s Operations lead notes, “I regularly responded to questions like 'I need to find this document' or 'I need to do this task'. The number of people who come to me now with questions has dropped significantly.
