We’ve recently shared several videos from our interview with Ashoka E2 Member and bestselling author James C. Rhee. Here’s one final video, on our shared vision on aligning the social sector – including Ashoka and the leading social entrepreneurs in our Fellowship – and the private sector, including the business entrepreneurs in Ashoka’s E2 Network. We often think of these as very different, but as James argues, we may have more in common than we think. We just use different language to communicate the same things. Take the changemaking skillsets Ashoka and our Fellows are trying to instill in the world around us. According to James, these are the exact skillsets private sector companies are looking for in their employees – they just use different words. Where Ashoka talks about the importance of “change” and “changemaking skills,” the private sector talks about “innovation” and “agility.” But in reality, these are the same skills. Do you agree? If so, how can we leverage these similarities, and do we overcome barriers like language? #business #social #entrepreneurship #socialentrepreneurship #redhelicopter #EveryOneAChangemaker #EntrepreneurtoEntrepreneur

“By participating in a systems change accelerator like Dela, IKEA co-workers broaden their perspectives. They learn about a new country, they learn about a new topic, they learn about social impact and social entrepreneurship. They learn about themselves because they are put in a new context.” In this new Medium story, we hear from Retail Equipment Manager at IKEA, Christina Enocson, one of the over 300 co-workers supporting #AshokaFellows to further develop and test their innovative strategies for #systemschange through the Dela programme. Christina’s reflections after participating in this global accelerator talk about key aspects of embracing new challenges and making real change. Why aren't fresh, nutritious meals part of hospital care everywhere? In Rwanda, Solid'Africa is leading the way via a network of farms, kitchens, and culinary centers serving medically-tailored meals to hospital patients (over 7 million meals to date). Today in Forbes: Solid'Africa founder Isabelle Kamariza talks to Yeleka Barrett about closing the nutrient gap and why, for her team, "food is love." Read up: https://lnkd.in/gBWABSXu #AshokaFellows

With the Olympics fast approaching, we'll tap social entrepreneurs in the UK on sports as a driver of social change, plus highlights we're looking out for at the Olympics and beyond. Joining us on July 24 will be 3 Ashoka Fellows: -Kelly Davies, former footballer from Wales who co-leads Ashoka's global work with sports and social change; -Mel Young MBE, founder of the Homeless World Cup (the inspiration for the new Netflix film 'The Beautiful Game'), former Chair of Sport Scotland, and former Board member of UK Sport; -Michael Sani, whose latest venture Play Verto looks at how to measure change and engage people in more creative ways for authentic responses and actionable insights. “Please stop propagating the myth of the great leader who is supposed to know everything!” So, what does a good #leader look like? At Ashoka, we believe the best leaders provide those around them with the agency to be #changemakers. Ashoka E2 Member and bestselling author James C. Rhee puts it like this: Leaders are not pilots flying an airplane with all the answers. Instead, they are good listeners who “allow the orchestra to play” – indeed, who encourage everyone to be changemakers. For more perspectives on leadership, changemaking, and much more, watch James’ full talk with Ashoka VP Njideka U. ➡️ When younger people in #SouthAfrica migrate from rural areas to cities for employment, they often leave their families in the care of the grandmothers. In the Sub-Saharan region, these elder women are commonly called Gogos; they have significant responsibilities as caretakers but can lack needed societal support. ⚽️ Over 20 years ago, Ashoka Fellow Beka Ntsanwisi noticed that many older women suffered from ailments like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and rheumatism. She took action and invited other women to exercise with her, and gradually, this turned into a movement; there are now about 40 #soccer teams featuring Gogos from the Limpopo province. 📖 Through soccer, the Gogos are redefining older age and surpassing expectations, both medically and culturally. Read about the teams and these incredible players on the Ashoka Changemakers #Medium blog, in this latest installment of a series on changemaking female elders: https://lnkd.in/e99QzSpc

If our systems don’t support the outcomes we want, why don’t we change them? Accounting is one of those systems, says Ashoka E2 Member James C. Rhee. Often, accounting standards drive undesirable business outcomes and behavior, which are then justified by “that’s how the system works.” But, as James argues, unlike physics, “accounting is made up” and therefore bendable – at least for internal purposes. So why don’t we? For more insights on how we can build better systems, businesses, and lives, check out James’ recent bestseller: www.redhelicopter.com or watch his full interview with Ashoka’s Njideka U.
