How do you overcome common environmental design challenges?

Having examples of successful instances and solutions can be invaluable in visualising the proposals and presenting something more tangible for Stakeholders to grapple with. These can be from within the Stakeholder's organisation, or other precedent studies with similar targets and aspirations.

Ideally there is time for behavioral research and/or testing when it comes to stakeholder journeys. In my experience, people don't always behave like they think they do when introduced to a new environment.

I think the main challenge to face while engaging stakeholders to make them beneficial for the community as they are the representatives, is to actually make them aware of facts of environmental issues. Unless and until they are not able to understand the real facts, impacts of an issue they will not be engaging enough to make a change for the community. Educating is key to every problem. Making simple prototypes, models or figures relating to the rising issues can easily make them understand and more engaging on their own. Eventually they will come forward and involve themselves in the whole process to make a change for the community.

Regulation can also be a useful 'stick' when developing projects and design as a thorough and nuanced understanding of compliance can help safeguard environmental components within design which may otherwise be omitted during Value Engineering or cost saving exercises. It can also be a powerful tool to ensure that the Contractor adheres to the contract information and that on-site substitutions do not threaten compliance with Regulation, such as embodied carbon targets which are rapidly becoming more prevalent.

The impact from the embodied carbon emissions associated with designs is critical as we face this climate emergency as the impact happens immediately, in comparison to energy consumption which is over the life time of a design. Our consumption rates show we will soon exceed the remaining carbon budget to keep within 1.5oC of global warming, and as designers we must robustly embrace our responsibility of these emissions through our work.

Agroforestry & Permaculture: Help in carbon sequestration, soil preservation, biodiversity. 5. Aquaponics & Hydroponics: Significantly reduce water usage, eliminate the need for pesticides. 6. Renewable Energy Integration: Solar or wind power reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 7. Water Management Techniques: Reduce water usage and mitigate the impacts of drought. 8. Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Manages pests in an environmentally,economically sound manner.

This can help manage risks and costs more effectively.

Another solution here is to bring your Creative team into the project as it begins rather than waiting until the end of the production phase. Design strategy is most comprehensive when it's integrated into all phases of the project. This keeps it from being just a decorative endeavor.

The pursuit of design creativity must not be at the expense of ensuring a design performs and works for people and planet. As fees and resources of projects are limited, designers must pick their priorities, and in the climate emergency, the planet must win.

As environmental designers, it is essential to undertake building performance evaluation (or Post occupancy evaluation), to understand how the performance of the design aligns, or not, with the design intent.
