In my university days in Guelph in the early 90s there were numerous people of short stature on campus who were unable to reach the buttons in the library elevators. Someone (likely a well meaning committee) decided to hang a wooden stick in each elevator suspended from a chain. People could use the sticks to push the buttons. Must have seemed like a good idea at the time, but they neglected to consider that the buttons were touch sensitive. They didn’t respond to the touch of a wooden stick. The sticks hung there for a couple of years and were probably taken down due to complaints of students poking each other with them, which is about all they were used for. A little post installation evaluation would have been helpful there.
