Here's how you can incorporate intuition into your job search decision making.

Don't overanalyze whether a company is a match for your experience. Chances are their website isn't up-to-date and their job postings are AI-generated or rewrites of similar positions online. What I'm getting at is that your fit within a company is likely nothing you will figure out beforehand - better to send your resume to 10 likely decision makers than spend an hour figuring out whether a company is relevant to your experience or ambitions.

Embrace Your Instincts: Trust immediate feelings about opportunities. We are trained to go with our judgement, use it. Tune Into First Impressions: When a job listing sparks excitement or hesitation, dig deep. Talk to others that work for the company. Pick up on hidden aspects of company culture or growth potential. Visualize Your Future: Picture yourself thriving in the role. If it feels right, it's a sign you're on the right path. Celebrate Intuitive Wins: Reflect on times when following your gut led to success. These victories are proof powerful intuition and boosts your confidence. Harmonize Instincts with Facts: Combine your gut feelings with research. The balance helps make inspired decisions that propel a career forward.

Research has shown that intuition - trusting your gut - means that your brain is processing deeply-stored information, including your experiences and feelings about a topic or situation. Trust your gut! If something about a job listing catches your eye, or causes some concern, pay attention! That's a cue that you should delve a little deeper into those areas both about the role and your fit for it.

The company/firm's culture, job fit, leadership, commute, morale, career alignment, compensation, growth, etc. Intuition can complement rational thought by guiding you toward opportunities that align with your values, goals, and long-term aspirations.

Seen in this era as less reliable, even unreliable with the emphasis on today's data collection methods. Intuition also “collects” data, just faster, more holistically, but can be experienced as chaos without the logic faculty. It’s logic that makes sense of intuitive data, sifts through raw information. Logic slices and dices data. Wisdom discerns valuable from less useful data for optimal decisions. Intuition will signal you to: - Value misalignment or connection with companies - Genuine appreciation or superficiality - Positive / disjointed interview flow - Detecting integrity on company websites with the people met during interviews

Searching for a job can be extremely emotionally taxing regardless of your qualifications, role or level. Even senior leaders and CEO's go through an emotional roller coaster when job searching. So, having people around you who can provide support and guidance can be tremendously helpful. Your family and friends are a good first place to look for this support, but I would strongly recommend exploring Job Search Councils, a concept I recently came across through Phyl Terry's book Never Search Alone. Having a group of people in the same boat as you, provides not only a level of mutual camaraderie and empathetic support but also allows one to learn about and explore areas that you may not have considered before.
