In appraising the merits or demerits of a design proposal, critics react intuitively against the perceived flaws rather than respond to the good bits. Aesthetics are dicey as clients are usually informed and prejudiced by their personal preferences and tastes. So listen hard and work towards persuading the Client to your stance. As in a debate, get the audience to accept or oppose the motion, whichever side you are on. The issue here is your interpretation of the brief which if ill-defined or ambiguous, leads to a real disconnect between Client's aspirations and vision against your design solution. So be detached from any criticism, constructive or not, in the interest of getting your creative ideas accepted and taken up by the Client.
