This is a dark compelling story with great performances and interesting characters.
The gameplay was just alright - the movement is way too slow, the puzzles are repetitive and the load screens on Switch are way too long. The map could be better - hard to see and unclear where to go at times.
However, the decision making process was interesting and some of your choices do the change the outcome in a meaningful way.
I'm glad I played it - I'm gonna skip the sequel though.

It feels like this came from a different development team. The UI is completely different from the original game and the visuals look cheap.
The gameplay is repetitive and fairly rote but the manuscript pages and the video tapes throughout kept me interested. I can see why it was left out of the remaster.
Still glad I played it but probably wouldn't play it again.

A soundscape for the ears and a sight for the eyes - Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga is a showcase for Unreal Engine 5 and a huge accomplishment for Ninja Theory.
At the same time it is also a repetitive, restrictive and extremely controlled experience. The amount of work that must have gone into the motion capture and audio design is fully on display here, but Ninja Theory has a very specific vision of what it wants to present here and it can get into the way of giving the player a satisfying role in the experience.
However, I am extremely glad this exists. It is a haunting, soulful experience that clearly takes inspiration, in particular, from the Descent in its best and most memorable chapter where Senua delves into the darkness and comes out of it a changed person.
Microsoft, whatever you do: keep this studio alive.

This is a game about the darkness inside of you and struggling with your internal demons and mental illness. It is difficult to tell if everything that happens to Senua is actually occurring or if she is simply being tormented by her own madness as she deals with the grief of losing her loved one.
However, while the story, acting and character work is fantastic, the gameplay is riddled with endless repetitive combat sequences and overused puzzles that ask you to do the same thing over and over again. One seriously hopes that the sequel adds some more variety and depth to the gameplay moving forward.
Definitely still worth a playthrough - the trials of odin in particular contain some of the most haunting sequences I've ever experienced even if the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.
Looking forward to what comes next.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Episode IntermissionBeat

Finally got to this after putting it off for almost 3 years - Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade: INTERmission is a great piece of downloadable content for FFVII Remake.
With a story that plays a bit like a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern version of a portion of the base game, it gives a proper introduction to one of the optional characters from the original Final Fantasy VII. Yuffie plays like a dream, with elemental attacks automatically integrated into one of her core abilities which makes combat more satisfying when you're not necessarily required to switch loadouts every single fight (though if you're anything like me you'll find you still do).
She's joined by a new character named Sonon who's only partially playable - so the dynamic of switching between your party members is a bit lost when you can really only control Yuffie at any given point (though you can still at least issue commands to Sonon so there is that).
I will say that it's a bit odd that with Yuffie's character having such a heavy emphasis as a thief and with stealing so incorporated into her abilities that the rewards are fairly minor - no weapons or unique items that I could find at least. Seems like a missed opportunity.
The endgame gauntlet was a bit ridiculous and required very specific strategies but I still enjoyed it.
The way the story wraps up falls a bit flat with a lower investment in these characters but there's room to grow.
Overall definitely worth a play and has content to spare for those who want to dive deeper.

This first part of the Final Fantasy VII modern trilogy fleshes out the world of Midgar significantly - taking elements that may have taken 5 minutes or less from the original and fleshing them out into whole chapters and building what felt like drafts of characters into real people.
The character designs are still outlandish (Barrett, Cloud and Tifa in particular feel out of this world when compared to the regular people of Midgar), but the conversations are no longer rough translations and now feel like significant effort was put into them.
Playing this after playing the original FFVII is life changing - the ability to view this world from a full 3D perspective after viewing it from the original top down view drastically enhances the experience - especially when it comes to the tiered society - you can clearly tell the difference between the slums and the plate above in a way that just wasn't possible before.
The combat system is also significantly enhanced. The ATB system is still in place, but the real time integration makes it significantly more exciting while still allowing for a turn based approach when it comes to more powerful moves. Add in materia customization and this allows you to truly build your loadout in a way that gives you a lot of flexibility.
The story enhancements don't stop there though - the meta narrative on top of the original that positions this as not just a remake, but a sequel adds intriguing threads that make this feel less like a retread and more like a commentary on remakes in general.
The trophies can be a bit much - making you go through chapters multiple times in order to accomplish goals for the dress one, for example, feel like a bit too much given you have to replay entire chapters that are irrelevant to those choices otherwise. And I wish hard mode hadn't felt so daunting after a few years so that I could've just replayed the game from there rather than doing normal again first.
Overall though this works great.

While this gives a look into Zack's history as a character and what led to the events of Final Fantasy VII this might have been served better as a DLC for FFVII Remake featuring the Nibelheim incident and moments with Aerith since the new elements it does introduce such as Zack's motivations (represented by Angeal) and fears (represented by Genesis) are horribly written and nonsensical.
The DMW system is completely random which makes progression unrewarding and random. Also EVERY SINGLE BATTLE starts and ends with the same dialogue and it's AGGRAVATING

There's a lot of the same here with what we got in Spiderman (2018) and Miles Morales but what is here is highly refined and expertly crafted.
And anyone who says this game is too short is insane. I got 37 hours out of this.

Really when it comes to Control I enjoyed the writing and the performances more than the actual gameplay/combat. So that I could replay this section I ended up turning all the assist options on to streamline the gameplay so I could make it back to the point where I could access the AWE DLC.
The way they've tied Alan Wake into this world is compelling and helps make it feel like part of something bigger. When I played this originally I was so far removed from Alan Wake I didn't appreciate it nearly as much but coming off the remaster it was FAR more rewarding.
I'm glad I did it but I wish they had made it easier to get to this content.

First time I played this game was over a decade ago - long enough that I'd long since forgotten the details of Daniel's journey into the darkness. The notes and diaries are the most compelling part of the game with a drip feed storytelling element that pulls you in as Daniel goes deeper and deeper down this well of torture and madness.
The voice acting can be hit or miss, with Alexander turning in the best performance, Daniel ranging from fitting to over the top and Agrippa being downright goofy.
The scares are dated now, especially if you know that the monsters despawn if you hide long enough after they're done patrolling. But the atmosphere is still deeply compelling, with great music and audio cues that still make my skin crawl and stress me the hell out.
Overall, still a very memorable experience if you can look past the outdated aspects and worth the trek. Though the ending could be better.
In terms of Steam Deck performance, while it's not officially supported there are community configs that work quite well and while it crashed a few times I only lost a little bit of progress here and there thanks to autosaves.
One thing I seriously did not like this go around though was the white flashes every time there's a flashback or you find certain interactable items/objects. Did not fit at all with playing in bed while my wife was asleep.

A huge leap forward for this franchise compared to the original and American Nightmare, the decision to ape the RE2make style gameplay was a great decision (more games should do this).
Some HUGE swings in this that totally land and the way it seamlessly incorporates elements from Control into this world works great. Feels like a mix of True Detective and Hannibal in a great way.
Facial animations are incredible and sunsets in this game are the best I've ever seen.
The addition of the case board was great though I wish you could clear more of the cases by the time you finish the game (bug?).
I also wish the game was better about letting you go back and complete things you missed (Alan's echoes, Saga's case board clues).

I wasn't sure what I was gonna think of this at first due to how different the characters looked and sounded but I warmed up to it.
Still incredible and this reworks a lot of the castle and the island to play more like the village with more puzzles and great new stealth elements.
However, it ***** that certain parts of each hub world get locked off randomly especially in the village where I couldn't get all the collectibles because of that.
