Just excellent. A zombie story in truth, and at times terrifying - and not just the zombie scenes, either - but so much more than that. More than once I felt that were a zombifying plague to really hit the world, this story is pretty much exactly how things would pan out. There are moments of such rich insight into economics, politics, capitalism, the culture of disaster, despair and warfare and other aspects of the human experience. As with 'I am Legend,' the horror is a vehicle to reveal something about human beings. Max Brooks understands people, and this makes the story stronger and more meaningful, which is always important for any book that reveals the ending before it begins. You are not reading here to find out what happened, but how it happened and why it happened the way it did. The characters are diverse and believable and I recommend this book to anyone smart enough to understand that in a zombie war, it might be the living that do the scariest things.
