A compelling read about what surely must be one of humanity's horrific chapters - the systematic destruction of the Congo and its peoples by one of history's little-mentioned, but most grotesque characters. The author's liberal standpoint may mean it is ultimately an unbalanced book, centring on exploitation and attrocity with no discernable counterpoint, but in chronicling that it is an excellent, if harrowing, account. The image of Nsala's daughter's hand and foot will haunt me for a very long time.
