can we talk about how collins made president snow the mc & then wrote a book about the importance of a community and how we need to be able to trust one another because love by itself isn't the magical remedy, and how life really is about making the most of things and standing up for what you believe in? snow must be turning in his grave.
this is such a well written book! not in terms of a fancy, poetical prose - that's actually very simple. but as in: smart and thought-out in details, and using those small details to drive the point home. and so that simplicity of the style works in favour of the novel.
there were so many instances where you would almost, almost forget what kind of person snow is, and then collins reminds you with a single sentence. every romantic moment between him & lucy gray is either preceded or followed up by something truly gross and disgusting (that snow, of course, sees as natural). with other characters it's less visible, mostly because he never really cared about anyone else & if he did, they were capitol, so he had respect for them anyway. but still, what he says at any given time and what he actually thinks are vastly different things; he excels at duplicity and manipulation.
my favourite part, though, (apart from lucy gray) was the worldbuilding. the look at the games in their beginning and how snow helped to shape them into an actual event. how they were somehow even more terrifying back then, the way they were treating kids as animals, not caring if they even survive long enough to make it to the arena.
the scene at the end when snow comes back to the base and throws mementos in the trash, discarding those layers of himself? the way in the epilogue he's only referred to as snow and not coriolanus? chef's kiss....more

the whole book could be summed up by that one siken quote:
you're in a car with a beautiful boy, / and you're trying not to tell him that you love him, and you're trying to / choke down the feeling, and you're trembling, but he reaches over and / he touches you, like a prayer for which no words exist, and you feel your / heart taking root in your body, like you've discovered something you / don't even have a name for....more
