Krótka, konkretna i dobrze się czytająca książka. Autor, z zawodu psychiatra i terapeuta, stara się przedstawić psychologiczny wizerunek arcyksięcia RKrótka, konkretna i dobrze się czytająca książka. Autor, z zawodu psychiatra i terapeuta, stara się przedstawić psychologiczny wizerunek arcyksięcia Rudolfa i na tle tej rekonstrukcji odpowiedzieć na pytanie o przyczyny jego samobójstwa. Cenię sobie, jako czytelniczka, w tej książce fakt, że autor - nie przesadza: nie tworzy wielopiętrowych teorii wymagających dodatkowych założeń, nie stara się proponować niepopartych źródłami traum, nerwic i powodów, a skupia się na opisie na faktów i wyciągnięciu z nich wniosków. Ucieka też od typowo plotkarskiej sensacyjności, która wydaje się niemal nie do uniknięcia przy tym temacie, jak również - unika łatwego obwiniania. I cesarz Franciszek Józef, i matka Rudolfa, cesarzowa Elżbieta, jego rodzeństwo, wreszcie żona Stefania stają się obiektami analizy autora; i jakkolwiek często wskazuje on na takie ich zachowania, które mogły przyczynić się do depresji, która w końcu Rudolfa zabiła (nieufność i gwarantowany etykietą chłodny dystans ojca, częste wyjazdy i emocjonalna izolacja matki od syna, wzajemna niechęć i lęk, panujące między Rudolfem a pozostałą na dworze najmłodszą siostrą, ulubienicą matki, Walerią, zazdrość - uzasadniona skądinąd - i gniew żony z powodu zdrad arcyksięcia), nie obwinia bliskich księcia, w sensie - nie feruje prostych wyroków, dzieląc jego otoczenie na winnych i niewinnych. W swojej analizie Salvendy wychodzi poza opis i analizę stosunków rodzinnych swojego bohatera - wskazuje też na rolę szeroko pojętego środowiska, na czynniki polityczne, społeczne i medyczne, a także osobowościowe, które mogły przyczynić się do samobójstwa arcyksięcia. Podkreśla wyraźnie, że ewidentnie mamy tu do czynienia z depresją - depresją zauważoną, najwyraźniej, przez co najmniej kilka osób na dworze, ale zlekceważoną i, ostatecznie, tragiczną w skutkach. Nie jestem historykiem i nie mnie oceniać, jak wiarygodne są wnioski i uwagi Salvendy'ego (na przykład jego spekulacje co do kompletnie marginalnej, tak naprawdę, roli Marii Vetsery w życiu Rudolfa), ale muszę przyznać, że czytało mi się tę książkę znakomicie. The main problem with the book is not as much its general concept (the author is not the first one to recognize Barrie's influence on the Llewelyn Davies boys as dangerous) as the sloppy and unreliable research. Generally, it consists of speculations on top of some more speculations, gossip and sensationalist tone. The person it deals with, Marie Thérèse Charlotte of France, daughter to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and the only memeber of their immediate family to survive the imprisonment during the Revolution, is certainly fascinating, not least because of the legend and legacy attached to her name as the "orphan of the Temple". Evans' work was, however - much as I expected it to be rather a popular account than a researched, academic book - all in all disappointing. This was partially due to the author's (otherwise a notable art historian) tendency to sentimentalize and dramatize the life that does not need such embellishments to move the readers and catch their attention, and partially due to the oversimplifications (to say the least) of historical vision, presented here. To give just one example: the entire French Revolution presented as merely a result of Orleanist conspiracy and an attempt by the Orlean branch of the Bourbons to seize power was the moment when I decided I cannot really treat the author's historical concepts seriously. Still, for an introduction to the person and character of the Duchess of Angoulême, the book will, in my opinion, do. ...more

It was written by Hector Fleischmann, specialising, as his Wikipedia page suggests, in writing about sensations and about love life of famous personages of the French Revolution and First Empire. This book is no different, although one can imagine that, in comparison with, say, Mary Antoinette or Pauline Bonaparte, the amount of material to analyse is rather smaller. As a result, vast majority of the book is based on conjectures and possibilities and the tone is that of gossip and sensation (which was evident even with my poor French). We start innocently enough with nurses and then the duke's cousin and their only meeting, to pass, soon, to the theoretically amourous adventures and possible lovers both in Vienna's demimonde (a famous dancer) and the court life (Franz Joseph's mother). Anyway: I was not expecting a serious historical analysis, I was prepared to get what I, finally, got, and, as such, the book was satisfying. An additional satisfaction can be drawn from the fact that human nature and the character of gossipy press/books has not changed at all since the 1910., whatever people may say about that......more

The author is more interested in reconstructing Nero's public image and self-representaion than in solving any mysteries of his life. Instead of taking a side in a long war of anti-Nero historians, who believe the ancient sources seeing in Nero an example of a bad, self-indulgent, cruel ruler (and, let us not forget, the persecutor of Christianity!) against those who believe Nero to be a much better emperor than the propaganda of his times presents him, Champlin concentrates on the conscious efforts of Nero to present his public image to the people of Rome and on the fact that Romans were probably understanding certain actions and decision rather differently than we tend to do today. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Roman history and in the issues of royal propaganda and self-representation. ...more
