Many of his experiences are harrowing (some downright tragic) and this book is not for the faint of heart.
This also isn't a book for those who lack a sense of humor. Su has an incredible sense of humor about the world and himself that is reminiscent of Augusten Burroughs at his best.
Part of what makes this such an incredible book is the author's triumph over adversities big and small.
Let's see, I'm trying to avoid giving too much away here. While the book is an immigrant's tale, it certainly isn't just a book for asians (or white people for that matter) as much of what he encounters are universal themes:
- winning a father's fleeting affection - surviving a tough environment - learning your own strengths and weaknesses - trying to find love in a world that doesn't seem to care
