Longtime Jeopardy! host and television icon Alex Trebek reflects on his life and career.

Since debuting as the host of Jeopardy! in 1984, Alex Trebek has been something like a family member to millions of television viewers, bringing entertainment and education into their homes five nights a week. Last year, he made the stunning announcement that he had been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. What followed was an incredible outpouring of love and kindness. Social media was flooded with messages of support, and the Jeopardy! studio received boxes of cards and letters offering guidance, encouragement, and prayers.

For over three decades, Trebek had resisted countless appeals to write a book about his life. Yet he was moved so much by all the goodwill, he felt compelled to finally share his story. “I want people to know a little more about the person they have been cheering on for the past year,” he writes in The Answer Is…: Reflections on My Life.

The book combines illuminating personal anecdotes with Trebek’s thoughts on a range of topics, including marriage, parenthood, education, success, spirituality, and philanthropy. Trebek also addresses the questions he gets asked most often by Jeopardy! fans, such as what prompted him to shave his signature mustache, his insights on legendary players like Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer, and his opinion of Will Ferrell’s Saturday Night Live impersonation. The book uses a novel structure inspired by Jeopardy!, with each chapter title in the form of a question, and features dozens of never-before-seen photos that candidly capture Trebek over the years.

This wise, charming, and inspiring book is further evidence why Trebek has long been considered one of the most beloved and respected figures in entertainment.

I’m very sad to only give this 3 stars. However this was entirely different than what I expected.

I’ve been raised on Jeopardy. At 7:30, my family and I would all gather to watch it, every single weeknight. This was just what we did from as far back as I can remember. I’ve even taken the test to be on the show several times, but have never made it to auditions! Alex trebek has always been someone I respected and looked up to as a more intelligent human.

I feel like he would be a great conversationalist, well spoken and well rounded on all topics. That is what surprised me most about this book, is that it was FAR from eloquent. It was written SO basic, and read just the same as any other celeb memoir. I’m sure he used a ghostwriter, typically all celebs do, but the writing felt like a grade school level. Besides the lack of eloquence, the fragmented sentences ran amok! Nearly every paragraph, were fragments that easily could have been rewritten to combine into other sentences. I’m not sure if it was rushed, poorly edited, or perhaps his show persona is THAT different than real life, but I simply felt he could do much better.

As far as the content, it was pleasant hearing about his unique travels and experiences and peeking into his family life. The chapters were short and per story, and tended to be disjointed. Some were interesting, some felt odd to be included, like his 5th grade teacher kissing him on the lips. Sorry but that is completely inappropriate and sounded like typical pedophilic grooming behavior. Overall, I’m glad I read it, but like I said, it was just DIFFERENT than I thought.

The world lost a great man today...

I was quite pleased to be able to get my hands on this brief autobiographical piece by Alex Trebek. He entertains readers with some pieces from his long time in the public spotlight, as well as many of his more personal moments. Trebek hails from Sudbury, Ontario and grew up in a loving home, where he was able to develop as a fully bilingual child. Trebek speaks a great deal of his diametrically opposed parents—a heavy drinking father and teetotaling mother—which made their match anything but smooth. However, this did not deter Trebek from carving out his own niche, which saw him find his own fair share of trouble in school and a brief, unsuccessful bout in military college. With his smooth talking and love of interacting, Trebek soon found himself working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in both radio and television, which proved to be a wonderful stepping stone for him into a career where he would be a household name. Trebek earned his keep in Canada and was soon working many important events and rubbing elbows—albeit lightly, we are Canadians—with some celebrities. Trebek was lured to the United States to try out for some new and intriguing game shows that were being bandied about, something that proved to be the place Trebek thought he belonged the most. After a few duds, including The Wizard of Odds (??), Trebek found some success and was eventually cast as the host for the revival of Jeopardy. Trebek spends a great deal of time sharing insights into the goings-on of this, his most popular television show. Quick to ensure the reader is aware that it is a quiz and not game show, Trebek regales the reader with funny quirks that occurred during his 36 years at the podium, as well as many of the foibles and successes the show has witnessed. While he continues to struggle with cancer, Trebek offers the readers some encouragement that no one is invincible and that he is not the be all and end all of Jeopardy, but simply the host who is willing to hand over the reins to another, whenever the time might come. Modest to a fault (Canadian, remember), Alex Trebek will likely never know just how many lives he has touched with his quick banter and quiz show moments. I am proud to have had to time to discover more about the man who has become a household name, even without Vanna White complementing him five times a week! Recommended to those who enjoy biographical pieces that seek to shine a light on the lighter side, as well as the reader that enjoys learning tidbits that Jeopardy never could offer through the television.

When I first got hold of the book, I was slightly dismayed. A man of eighty who has done so much and the book is short. I expected a tell-all with long chapters and many pieces of information that would have me thirsting for even more. However, once I got started, I began to see that Trebek, who was in the middle of chemotherapy and was close to two score old, would likely want to get this piece out quickly and highly key moments, rather than create a substantive narrative about each event. Trebek breaks things down into small vignettes, titling them with some of the catchphrases used on Jeopardy, which makes it much more digestible and easy to devour in short order. Trebek has much to say and does so with ease, even if he won’t expand on all the details. He discusses the crafting of the show, how contestants are vetted, and what sorts of categories have been presented over the years. He is keen to also share some of his own persona anecdotes about some of the more notable contestants (going so far in the audio version of the book as to let Ken Jennings narrate all but a few vignettes). Trebek, who was once known as having quite the potty mouth in Hollywood, is down to earth and loves his family so very much, as it becomes apparent with each passing story. While brief, I was so very pleased with what he had to offer and hope others will pick up a copy of their own. Answer: Alex Trebek. Question: Who is a man with a legacy that will surely outlive him and all his accomplishments!

Kudos, Mr. Trebek, for all you have shared. I admire you and all you have done. You make Canada (and the world) proud with your many accomplishments and charitable work!

I never read political books or celebrity biographies. The first category just raises my blood pressure, the second goes on the I could care less list. But this.....well, this is Alex Trebek. He's not a celebrity, he's a member of my family.
When I had finished 18 hours of labor when my daughter was born, exhausted and weepy, he was there to comfort me. And he had all the answers! When I fought with that same daughter as a teen, again, exhausted and weepy, there he was. Bad day at work....Alex. Sick, sad, angry, afraid....Alex. He wasn't there just when things were bad, but all the good times as well. My 30 minutes of Jeopardy! every day was my yoga for the spirit. Still is.

I knew I had to read this when I first learned of it, and I wasn't disappointed in the least. More of a reminiscence and sharing his opinions on everything than a memoir, it's like a conversation with a friend. Lots of Jeopardy! trivia that fans will love, but his philosophies and thoughts on how his cancer has changed things for him and his family too. Lots of pictures. One short chapter on politics where he mentions "The mental incompetence" of our present leader. Not by name, but, Gee, wonder who he meant? The last few chapters had me in tears, with one of the sweetest conclusions I've ever read.

This book is very simply written by a good, kind man who takes his role as husband, father and game show host very seriously. He knows his reputation as an icon, but never lets it go to his head. As I said, he's always there, and always has all the answers. May he live forever, because on the day he is not behind his podium on that stage, I may go into serious decline.

I have had luck with uplifting timely biographies lately. Trebek's biography and Michael J. Fox's most recent memoir have both been recent audiobooks for me. Each of them was released this year and both contain content related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Talk about up to the minute updates before publication! Also, they were both great books as they present uplifting outlooks on life in the face of mortality and illness. I can only dream of having as optimistic an outlook on life as Trebek and Fox.

This book is half and half - half a background of Trebek's life up until Jeopardy and half Trebek's life during Jeopardy. If you don't have an interest in either Trebek or Jeopardy, you may not find much to get you interested here. But, if you have even a passive interest in either, I think you will find something to entertain you here. I have always liked Trebek for his pop culture relevance and Jeopardy is a show I frequently enjoy watching. Because of both of these things, I enjoyed this book a great deal.

Recently, Trebek passed away after battling pancreatic cancer for a couple of years. In the book he shows his optimism by saying that cancer should not be considered a battle - which indicates that there will be a winner or loser. Which also means if you do not survive you are the "loser". That just does not jive for Trebek and I am humbled to hear what a strong and amazing person he was in the face of adversity.

2020 was a crummy year, and it was the year we lost Trebek, but he left us with some powerful words and awesome wisdom - and some fun background about himself and Jeopardy along the way!

Jeopardy! has long been a staple in our family, and we try to catch it every chance we get. My husband, in particular, loves the show, and we have a friendly competition going to see who can shout out the most correct answers before they're revealed. If one of us is particularly clever, that person even gets to lord it over the other for a couple of hours afterwards. So I was super curious when I saw that Trebek's memoir was coming out.

The Answer Is… is a look back at Trebek's life and his work in television. Told through short vignettes, it's a chance for the famous game show host to reflect on his life and to share some of the wisdom he's gain through the years. The short chapters, each only about one to three pages in length, make this a super readable book. Whenever I had a few moments, I would easily gobble up a few chapters. My favorite parts are definitely those related to his work on Jeopardy!

I wouldn't say this book provides a particularly insightful look or a deep dive into his life. Rather, Trebek has said himself that his mental faculties have been fading a bit with age and by rigorous cancer treatment, and that is something that's reflected in the book. Still, he comes across as hardworking, humble, and kind. And he seems to have a great sense of humor, able to laugh at life and at himself.

I enjoyed this book and found it interesting, though I wish it offered more. But still, as a fan of the show, I found it to be a terrific companion to understanding more of the man behind the show. I don't think this memoir is for every reader, but I'd definitely recommend it if you're a fan of Jeopardy!

A nice narrative about a nice man. The brief anecdotes kept things moving along while still allowing for good insight into Alex Trebek’s character. I came away with a solid impression of Alex as a humble, down-to-earth, all-around good guy who hasn’t let his celebrity status affect him negatively. An enjoyable listen about a true American icon.

The Answer Is...Reflections on My Life by Alex Trebek offers the reader a view into his life and a look at his influence on a program that has endured for decades. His approach to life and to death speaks of a simple man who lived a fascinating life. There is food for thought here, from his love of family to his courage when faced with a terminal diagnosis. All proceeds from this book are to be donated to people who live in poverty or have special needs.

I dislike game shows in general, and rarely read biographies or autobiographies.  An exception had to be made for Alex Trebek.  My husband and I have watched Jeopardy! for well over 30 years.  Other reviewers have mentioned how Alex almost feels like a member of the family, or a good friend.  I agree wholeheartedly.  As well known as he is, there is an utter lack of pomposity about him.  From the first, he insisted on being introduced as the "host" rather than the "star" of the show.   The book is full of photos and interesting odds and ends about the show itself.  His deep love for his wife and children shines through.  Simply written, it reads as though he was seated in your living room just shooting the breeze with you.  Fans of Jeopardy! and Alex will want to read this.

George Alexander Trebek ~ July 24, 1940 - November 8, 2020

Jeopardy!

Oh I loved this book, but am so MAD! I rarely ever miss Jeopardy and was so looking forward to watching the last weeks of Alex Trebek's taped shows, but several days ago my money-grubbing cable provider together with the equally money-grubbing owner of NBC removed the channel that I pay for! Combined with Covid, staying home ALL the time and other recent disappointments I won't bore you with, I am ticked!

Anyway, this was a fast, entertaining read with short chapters, great photos and a very interesting look at the life of Alex Trebek from youngster to his end of life battle with pancreatic cancer.

I so enjoyed reliving with him his memories of so many episodes I've seen and remember fondly, and am glad he shared the story about charities and their tricks of sending money to donors to get more in return. (This has happened to me more than once!)

In his autobiography Alex shares with us his favorite animal, books, movies, pastimes and love for his family. Along with other interesting tidbits about the show and Jeopardy song, Alex expresses his love to travel and just be silly....while he swears. Such a good, hard working man was Alex who truly cared about all people and the environment.

Enjoyable read. Sad he's gone. Will miss his "comforting voice and presence."

Like millions, I grew up watching jeopardy. In Chicago, the quiz show was on at 3:30 in the afternoon, a segue between afternoon rest and coffee and supper prep on a lazy day off from school. Many times I organized my schedule around when the show was on because I did not want to miss it. I would watch with my mom and we both were determined to see if we knew more than the contestants. Sometimes we did, many times we did not. I even tried out for the teen tournament in high school, and I can attest that the show is harder than it looks. It remains the most intelligent of game shows, and I prefer it to the majority of what airs on the small screen.

I’m sure I speak for many fans that I was devastated by the news of the passing of Jeopardy host Alex Trebek (not to mention Sean Connery the same weekend, a double whammy). By watching Jeopardy daily during school vacations, Trebek was much more a part of my life than the athletes I adore, whose playing seasons only take up portions of the year. Trebek had been asked to write a book for years. After his diagnosis, he gave in, so to speak, in order to stay head of the tabloids who he surmised would want to write an expose style biography of their own. Now Trebek would have something to leave for his future children to remember him by, the story of his life in his own words.

Other than writing a few Jeopardy clues here and there, Trebek was not a writer. This this book falls into the category of celebrity memoir where I know I am not reading it for its literary prowess. In 2020, that’s about where my brain is. Before hosting Jeopardy he hosted a number of other shows but they all fizzled out. No one was ever as prepared for work or offered to work more hours. And he was such a gracious gentleman too. Jeopardy was a reward for all the work that Trebek put in as he moved up the ranks of television. The schedule only demanded to long days a week of production, allowing for plenty of family time. A handy man, Trebek loved being at home with his wife Jean and their two kids, revealing to fans that Trebek is as much of a good guy off the screen as he is on it.

The world is waiting for the airing of Trebek’s last episode of Jeopardy later this month. No new host has been named yet, but whoever it is has large shoes to fill. Some parts of this memoir were humorous but I needed tissues for other parts as Trebek grappled with his pending mortality. I’m not sure I’ll be able to watch these last few episodes of Jeopardy. It will be too emotional and I know I’ll need tissues handy. Then again, I’m always curious to see if I know more than the contestants like I did as a kid. Alex Trebek will be sorely missed by many. The world just doesn’t produce enough gentlemen like him anymore.

Watching Jeopardy is part of our weekday routine in my house - my husband and I watch it together and we individually keep track of how many 'answers' we shout out correctly before they are revealed by either a contestant or Trebek. We then compare our totals at the end of the show and the person with the highest score is that day's Jeopardy champion. It's a fun friendly competition. So of course I had to go ahead an pick this book up, and in audiobook format because it's narrated both by Trebek and (mostly) by the famous G.O.A.T, Ken Jennings.

If I were to remove my bias and love for Jeopardy/Trebek, and judge this book purely on it's content, I would honestly rate it lower. But who the heck is going into reading this book without that bias?! So if you want to read a little bit about behind the scenes of the show and the life of the man who is the face of the show, no matter how much he rails against being labeled as it's star, then this is worth picking up. It's nothing ground breaking. It's written by a man who is in failing health, not in his prime, and so the perspective and introspection the book offers reflects that accordingly. But I knew very little about Alex Trebek before reading this, so I found it pretty interesting. At the end it ends on a warm, yet heartrending note which left me with a tear in my eye. I think I'll now go watch a rerun of Jeopardy.

The man was like the favorite uncle of all North America. He was also a really good guy. In this day and age, that, sadly, is saying quite a something.

I enjoyed learning more about him and of his will to live. His memoir is not a deep think-piece, nor is it particularly profound. What it is: life-affirming and a must for any fan of his Jeopardy!

I'll admit I waited a while before reading Alex Trebek's The Answer Is... , reflections on life from the late game show host and television icon.

“...even if you are learning facts that you are not going to be able to use in your daily life, it enriches you—the fact itself just enriches you as a human being and broadens your outlook on life and makes you a more understanding and better person.”

I watch very little television, but watching Jeopardy every night has definitely been a ritual for many years, and I love playing along with (and sometimes doing better than) the contestants. I took the online quiz 10 times over the years and passed, and even went to take the in-person text nearly 30 years ago in Atlantic City, but never got the call to move to the next round. 😢

When Trebek announced he had pancreatic cancer, it felt like it happened to a family member, since I have been watching him all these years, and I was so sad when he died. I watched his last episode while sobbing and I still expect Johnny Gilbert to say his name when announcing the guest host.

The Answer Is... isn’t quite a memoir, but more reflections on his life—his childhood, family, ambitions, how he got into television, his career, his family, much about Jeopardy , and his thoughts on his impending mortality. He was wickedly funny and of course, as expected, there are moments of beauty and poignancy, as he speaks of his beloved wife and children.

As an avid game show watcher growing up, I remember him long before he started hosting Jeopardy , so this book was such an enjoyable read for me, but of course, one that left me teary-eyed at the end. (This is why I waited so long to read it.)

Even though I’ll never get to tell Alex I’d like to make it a true daily double, I’m grateful I was witness to a portion of his remarkable career and personality.

I absolutely love Jeopardy. It’s the only game I have on my phone and not to toot my own horn, but I’m a billionaire on there 😉 When I saw Alex Trebek had a memoir out I knew I had to read it. I’ve been on the wait list for my library for what seems like forever, and I was so sad to hear that while I was waiting, he passed. His story was interesting and he seemed like a great man. I loved the few chapters her narrated. I do wish this was a little more in depth and fully narrated by him, but it was still a nice listen and it was great to learn a little bit more about him.

"I believe in the will to live.
I believe in the power of positivity.
I believe in optimism.
I believe in hope."
- Alex Trebek

Last year I was surprised when my mother informed me that Alex Trebek announced that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Due to the outpouring of love and kindness, cards and letters with prayers, and encouragement , Alex Trebek
felt he should write a book.

Longtime "Jeopardy" host and television icon Alex Trebek reflects on his life and career. He has hosted the quiz show Jeopardy! for thirty-six seasons, earning him seven Daytime Emmy Awards – including a Lifetime Achievement Award - and Guinness World Record for most episodes of a game show hosted by the same presenter.

His book The Answer Is ... uses a novel structure inspired by "Jeopardy!", making it very easy to read. I enjoyed reading Alex Trebek's wise, charming and inspiring words and looking at the dozens of photos of him and his family. 4 stars ⭐️️⭐️️⭐️️⭐️️

I am a big Jeopardy fan. I have been watching since it started in the late 1960s. At that time, I also watched College Bowl hosted by Alan Ludden (Betty White’s husband). I wish they would bring back College Bowl. I would rather watch college teams compete academically as well as in sports.

The book is well written. I chose to purchase the Kindle version because of the photographs instead of the audiobook. Trebek provides a brief overview of his life growing up in Canada. Most of the book is about Jeopardy. He also talks about a few key contestants that over the years brought about changes in the format of the program. I enjoyed the book particularly knowing that Trebek is near the end of his life.

I downloaded the book from Amazon to my Kindle app on my iPad. The book is 304 pages and was published on July 21, 2020 by Simon & Schuster.

11/8/2020 Alex Trebek died today after battling pancreatic cancer. In addition to his career on Jeopardy, he was known for being caring, warm, and an extremely nice guy. Rest in peace.

Alex Trebek, the longtime host of the game show "Jeopardy!," reflected on his life in this warm, conversational book. In addition to amusing anecdotes about his career in "Jeopardy!," he tells about his childhood in Canada and his present life in Los Angeles. He's a loving husband, and thinks the world of his two adult children. He has a garage full of tools because he's a down-to-earth guy who loves to make home repairs.

Trebek is also a caring humanitarian who believes in giving back. He's been very involved with World Vision and other charities, and has made many trips to Africa. Trebek has also done work with the USO visiting military bases and entertaining them with a "Jeopardy!" experience.

Trebek was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer last year. He shares his thoughts about dealing with pain, fatigue, and depression as he copes with the disease.

The book is composed of short chapters with many photographs and chapter headings in the form of a question. It's a charming read, sprinkled with humor and emotion, that feels like a chat with a friend. It gives us the answer to the question, "Who is Alex Trebek?"

How can one rate Alex Trebek on his own memoir, or as he prefers, his brief autobiography. It’s all the stars, of course.
I’ve always been a Jeopardy fan since my mother watched it when I was younger, then my older sister and me. The tradition continues but now my kids are too smart and way too fast!
Alex is just the guy I thought he was, a regular guy, as he describes himself. A nice guy, good neighbor and family man, and he even fixes stuff around his house! Very interesting to know he has a garage full of tolls that he bought from a hardware store going out of business. Isn’t that most men’s dream? It is for my husband.
Anyway, lovely book from a lovely man.

Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. These are words that NO ONE can bear to hear...but my Dad heard them and so did Alex Trebek. My Dad used to say to me all of the time that they were going to beat it together. Although both men are gone, but never forgotten, they will be remembered as being tough as nails and refusing to let this disease bring them down.

“A lot of people think I’m pretty sharp as the host of Jeopardy, but when I look back on my life I did plenty of stupid things.” Alex keeps it real this entire Biography.

“The Answer Is...” is the story of the absolute legend that is George Alexander Trebek, but also one of an ordinary man that rose to the top because the audience loved him and his personality! He was a like-able; funny guy.

“My favorite subject was Geography, I also liked Geometry—anything with a “G”—Geography, Geometry and Girls!”

“Growing up I wanted to either be a pilot, a doctor or the prime minister of Canada.” But as we all know he instead became a one-of-a-kind host of a world-renowned game show. But, he didn’t automatically start at the top—he worked his way up and began with a competition show called “Battle Stars” — and then he never looked back when producers decided to package “Jeopardy” along with “Wheel of Fortune” and together they took off!

“Yes hard work and experience are essential but so is timing and luck. Don’t ever discount the importance of luck in terms of determining your opportunities and your future.”

Alex was also a romantic...“We are one soul in two bodies.” —Regarding his wife, Jean Currivan Trebek.

The narrator of most of this book—Ken Jennings— was not only a contestant on the show, but became a dear friend of Alex’s. He was on the show for 16 weeks and won 74 straight games and 2.52 million dollars.

I know that it would’ve been difficult but I really wish that Alex had recorded all of this story in his own voice, I felt myself getting emotional and relating to the words being said during his clips so much more.

I’d like to be remembered first of all as a good and loving husband and father, and also as a decent man who helped people perform at their best because that was my job.”

My only criticism of this book is that I wish he didn’t go off on a tangent about how much he gives back to society, or his in-depth opinion on politics. I wanted to skip through these sections.

4 ⭐️! A great read. Rest In Peace sweet man. 🙏🏻

I really enjoyed the audio version of this book, narrated by both Trebek, and Jeopardy contestant and friend to Alex, Ken Jennings. Unlike a more typical memoir, the book is divided into small chapters that cover what Alex considers highlights from his life, each chapter starting with The Answer Is… or What/Who is…. It lends some insights into the Jeopardy show, important moments from Alex’s life that he reflects back on, and his philosophy on life. While I wasn’t a big fan of the show like many others who tuned in regularly, I’m left with the impression that here was a good man, and it was interesting to learn more about him.

I read in other reviews that the actual book has some pictures, and I think I’d like to pick one up to check those out, too.

This was just okay for me.
While I did get to hear Alex Trebek swear (it's kind of magical), I feel like a large portion of this book was dedicated to other people's stories.
The stories we do hear surrounding him were delivered with something like aloofness.
Maybe it was just me hoping for more.
He is still one of my all time favourite Canadians, and I will miss him when he's gone.

Was going to read just a few pages this morning, but ended up reading the whole book. Because who doesn't like Alex Trebek? And it's surprisingly current, wrapping up with life in COVID-19 quarantine.

4.5 stars only because I wish it had been even longer!
But maybe 5 stars anyway because it’s Alex fucking Trebek! (I think he’d get a kick out of that, as much as I try to watch my language in reviews, there’s some early ribbing from Alex about his own love of cussing and how that may shock some).

I suppose I’ll start this review by telling you my own probably very typical story of what Alex and Jeopardy means. I don’t have the best relationship with my family. I grew up in a lot of chaos (and in situations not so unlike the other book I’ve been reading concurrently, Mary Trump’s book) but one of the few truly good and happy memories I have of being home with my mom is of watching Jeopardy and playing along together. She’d grab a paper and pen. We’re both fiercely competitive. And we would argue for half points or who answered first sometimes but it was always in good fun. Then my dad who isn’t at all the competitive type and was never the kind of geek my mother or me are, would occasionally blow our minds by suddenly volunteering an answer neither of us knew, the really difficult ones that often no one else on the show knew either. He didn’t like playing against us though because he often didn’t know the other answers. I think if you could’ve combined the three of us, though, we’d give Ken Jennings a real good run for his money!

Anyway, so I went into the book with those happy memories. I listened to the audiobook and in a certain sort of way it reminded me a lot of listening to Michelle Obama’s book. Alex only narrates a few sections while Ken Jennings does the rest but it’s all conversational, in short chapters with the kind of wit and silliness you’d expect from Alex. Something about it actually reminded me of my father who is just a year older than Alex and a lover of storytelling. So I had a lot of warm fuzzies going on. As I already said, I truly did not want this one to end.

Alex was born in Sudbury, ON to a Ukrainian immigrant father and a French Canadian mother. He was raised and remains completely bilingual. He shares a lot of stories about his family and growing up. You may be surprised to learn he was sometimes a bit of a troublemaker in school. As much as the book is told in brief little anecdotes, they’re all well chosen- each chapter is phrased in Jeopardy format as the answer to questions, and you really get a good feel for what shaped him and made him who he is.

He had an incredibly extension career in the media, starting with the CBC in Canada and in radio and eventually hosting a whole series of game shows before landing on Jeopardy in 1984. He gives us lots of fascinating details about the show and it’s history and how it’s run.

Besides this he discusses meeting both wives- I’ve never heard of a divorce as amicable as the one between Alex and his first wife Elaine. The chapter in the audiobook which he narrates himself about meeting his second wife, Jean, is especially sweet. He truly believes she is his soul mate and their 24 year age gap never mattered at all, even Jean’s father who was skeptical at first ended up getting along well with Alex.

There’s also some absolutely hilarious stories throughout. The only time he did drugs. The time he met the queen. I spent hours snorting with laughter after the section where he mentioned hosting a Royal Canadian Ballet performance for the CBC in which Rudolph Nureyev was performing with them and how as he stood just off stage watching and marveling over Nureyev’s tremendous talent, everyone was shocked to hear Nureyev muttering, not loud enough for the audience to hear but perfecting audible to those back stage, a litany of “Fuck! Shit! Fuck! Shit!” between turns. Maybe it’s because I was trained in and deeply passionate for ballet but I still giggle imagine Nureyev doing fouetté turns, “Fuck! Shit!”-ing the whole way.

Trebek has two children, a son and daughter with his wife Jean as well as a child from Elaine’s previous relationship who he never adopted but loved like his own and remains close with to this day. The end of this book addressed COVID and how much he’s enjoyed spending so much time with his kids.

There’s so much more to discover too! So many cool and interesting stories. You’ll feel like you’re sitting next to Alex as he talks with you. Some of it really is surprising too. I mean who knew he was so handy? From replacing a bathtub to using a sewing machine to replace the cover on an outdoor swing to repairing a clothes dryer. He enjoys facing new and different challenges. I loved his discussion on this and how much he loves learning.

He loves his life, loves his family, and loves his job. He even talks about how filming helps him cope with his pain. I only love and admire the man all the more after listening to this book. I don’t do “inspiration porn” and frankly neither does Alex. I’m sure plenty of other reviewers are going to end up yakking on and on about what an inspiration he is especially with the cancer but no. I love his realistically optimistic outlook and this isn’t about inspiring healthy or abled folks, but as someone else who has been beating some serious medical odds while understanding the disease will win sooner or later too, I loved hearing Alex’s story. It meant a lot to me, especially the last few chapters. This is the kind of stories that are meant to be shared and not to make healthy folks feel better about their lives but to inspire others going through similar because we don’t have too many role models or representation to look up to. I finished this book with a big smile on my face.

Anyway, personal stuff aside- though I’m sure we all have personal reasons to read about an icon like Alex Trebek- I deeply enjoyed this and think that other readers who are interested in reading this one will enjoy it as well. Having heard there’s a bunch of photos in the physical copy, I’m definitely going to have to buy it. But give the audiobook a listen as well, if you get the chance!

I was surprisingly moved by this book--Alex is waging great war with a cancer that has killed people I love, and he carries himself with so much grace and gratitude. I'm going to give this five stars because it's 2020 and anything that makes you really cry without ALSO making you want to scream is an esteemed, important part of any media diet.

I liked the loose formatting and flash memories. I thought Alex came across as genuine and dedicated, if a bit pompous. Loved his generous take on Kenny J.

Not a typical autobiography, but rather this book is exactly what the title states- Alex's reflections on things throughout his life. At first I was thrown off by the casualness of the writing, I guess I assumed it would be more literary, but after I adjusted to it I really enjoyed the writing style. It didn't feel overthought or overworked.

The Answer Is… is the memoir from long-time Jeopardy host, Alex Trebek.  Those looking for a standard paint-by-numbers linear memoir may be disappointed, but what you get here is likely a better experience.  I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook, which aside from the introduction, the conclusion and a handful of chapters read by Alex, was mostly read by Alex’s friend and Jeopardy contestant Ken Jennings.

In his memoir, Alex muses on the highlights of his life.  From growing up the son of Ukrainian immigrants in Sudbury, Ontario to how his early days in radio led to the natural transition to television host.  It’s fascinating how easily Trebek would bounce from variety show host, to afternoon chat show host to game show host.  Sure, he had his nervous episodes and doubts about his abilities, but he seemed to be able to excel quite handily with whatever task he was given.  This has a lot to do with his positive attitude and his refusal to quit when confronted with adversity (aside from his brief tenure in military school).

There are many anecdotes in this book that had me laughing out loud.  From meeting the Queen, to his hilarious Q&As with the Jeopardy studio audiences, Alex has a great sense of humor and humility about himself.  He even touches on Will Ferrell’s infamous impersonation, which Alex said flattered him.  That said, he notes that Eugene Levy did the best impression during his time on SCTV when they lampooned the CBC quiz show, Reach for the Top.

As expected, much of the book deals with the behind the scenes nature of Jeopardy and some of the contestants that Alex deemed the most memorable over the years.  One of the things I wasn’t aware of was that the cap on consecutive show appearances only ended in 2003.  Previously, you could only win 5 shows before you had to retire.  This worked out really well as Ken Jennings would appear shortly after the rule was abolished.

In my opinion, the only time the book really falters is when Trebek enters into political commentary.  While he stays neutral in his assessment (problems on both sides of the political spectrum in the United States), it just felt sort of out-of-place and shoe-horned in.  It wasn’t offensive by any means, but more of a non-opinion… opinion?  It’s not uncommon to think that we need to come together and end the division amongst the population, but it’s unlikely to happen and it sort of felt like fluff.

Things take a turn for the serious as Alex gets deep into his cancer diagnosis – something he’s still currently battling.  Trebek is very candid and open about how this fight has changed his life and has left him tired and drained on a daily basis.  It’s a sobering look at the effort it takes to step in the ring with such an aggressive form of cancer.   Alex isn’t looking for sympathy here, but he said he’s received a lot of positive comments from people saying he’s made them feel less alone in their own battle with the disease.

This was a quick read (under 5 hours total on audio).  It breezed by and was enjoyable enough that I could recommend this to just about anyone.  Alex is truly a good man with a heart for philanthropy and the Jeopardy trivia brought to the surface here would be interesting enough to anyone who had just a passing interest in the show.

Normally, I don't talk specifically about the audio editions of books I read. Mainly because of the structure of a sentence like that: I didn't READ, precisely, I LISTENED. But I'm of the opinion that audio reading is still reading, so long as it's not abridged. And in the case of Alex Trebek's new autobiography, the audio makes a few fairly significant changes that colored and nuanced my love of the book.

First off, Alex doesn't read most of the book. Often when I see two readers on the front cover, the non-author has written a foreword and is now going to read it aloud; the author takes on the narrative duties for the rest. In this case, Alex has asked Jeopardy! mega-winner Ken Jennings to narrate his life, with small narrative insertions by Alex throughout the book.

This is initially jarring in a couple of ways. Alex has a very recognizable voice, so to hear someone else say things like, "When I started hosting Jeopardy!..." Most people will get over that faster than me. My bigger stumbling block is the fact that I'm a Ken Jennings fan. I've listened to audio recordings of his other books, and I like his reading voice a lot. So going in knowing this author I like is reading in the persona of this media figure I like, and the fact that both of them have recognizable voices ... well, it was a bit of a mindscrambler for me. I got over it.

It was sort of easy to get over it, because this is not a demanding book. Each chapter is broken up into little vignettes of Alex's life, with each chapter title taking on the form of a question: "What is Life?," "What Is a Soulmate?," "What is Humility?" It's charming. Anyone expecting an in-depth look at the seedy underbelly of America's Uncle Alex isn't going to get it. But for a nice-guy, late-Boomer white heterosexual Canadian who had to invent a (remarkably charming) vice to fit in with "the guys," it's still pretty compelling. I mean, it's Alex Trebek. You want him to have had a pretty good life.

One last thing about the audio: Alex does pop in from time to time. He does the foreword and afterword. He takes over from Ken when the book starts talking ABOUT Ken. And when The Answer Is... gets into more intimate details of Alex's marriage to his soulmate, Trebek takes over with so much feeling that it made my eyes water.

Some might dismiss this "greatest hits" version of a biography as slight. I wouldn't agree. For a quiz show host who has spent his life giving us the answers in rapid succession, leaving us to ask the questions, Alex stays true to his character here. What questions we might have when the book is finished all boil down to one: how much longer do we get to have this great man with us?
