This part takes a jump of several centuries, focusing on the life of one of the descendants of the protagonist of the first novel, but this time, the main character is a female, a portrait of a talented and courageous woman physician who stares at her reflection in the glass ceiling, and decides to seek and find a more meaningful life. Roberta Jeanne d'Arc Cole is favored to be named associate chief of medicine at a Boston hospital. She is married to a surgeon. They own a trophy residence on historic Brattle Street in Cambridge and a summer house in the Berkshire Hills. I read this book because I so very much enjoyed the first two books in the series. I agree wholeheartedly with the other critical reviews of this book. I would not recommend it. I do plan to read other well-reviewed Noah Gordon books like The Last Jew. I don't know what happened with this book, but it was, indeed, as though it was written by someone other than the same author of The Physician and Shaman.
Skip it and read one of his good books instead.

This book was such a disappointment. I really enjoyed the first two books in the The Cole Family Series and was eager to read this one. But, boy. I felt that Gordon't handling of the protagonist R.J. was so incredibly clumsy. It's as if the task of voicing a female character overwhelmed him. There were little things that just felt so off, little comments that didn't need to be included but sounded like a man's stereotypical idea of what a woman would think and want. I remember R.J. having a cup of sweetened coffee and Gordon writes that the coffee was "sure to put on the pounds." Also, the plot was meandering and felt like it was going nowhere. And in the end, it didn't. The end was predictable. I mean, I literally said, "Of course" and rolled my eyes. There were chunks of the book dedicated to a secondary character that I just skipped altogether because I couldn't care less about him. So overall, it was a real disappointment. I longed for the elegant and neat storytelling of the two previous books in the series.

Matters of Choice is the third book of Noah Gordon's successful trilogy. This part takes a jump of several centuries, focusing on the life of one of the descendants of the protagonist of the first novel. Like the first part, the medicine will be the thread of the plot, but this time, the main character is a female that will have to confront gender bias in a difficult time to be a woman doctor. For me, this book is even better than the first, especially for the realistic atmosphere of the time and the strength of the main character. It’s a fiction book that mixes adventure, drama and above all, a journey through the exciting world of science.

La doctora cole es el tercer libro de la exitosa trilogía de Noah Gordon. Esta parte hace un salto de varios siglos para centrarnos en la vida de una de las descendientes del protagonista de la primera novela. Como en la primera parte, la medicina será el hilo conductor de la trama, pero esta vez se e añadirá el hecho de que la protagonista femenina deberá enfrentarse a los prejuicios de sexo en una época difícil para una mujer médico. Para mí este libro es aún mejor que el primero, sobretodo por la genial ambientación de la época y la fuerza de su protagonista. Es un libro de ficción que mezcla aventuras, drama y sobretodo un viaje a través del apasionante mundo de la ciencia y las personas.

Not nearly as good as the first two in the series, the book suffered from a setting contemporary to its writing and all the problems of a man writing a female main character. I understand that a woman as a doctor shows progression of the profession through time, but the intimate thoughts and personal story fell into cliché far too often. It really disappoints me because I think "Physician" is probably in my top 20 books I've ever read, and "Shaman" manages the unusual viewpoint of a deaf narrator very well.
The first main issue is the lack of distance from the period being written about since it was contemporary when Gordon wrote it in the mid-1990s. The perspective of history, with space and time to analyze the major conflicts of the period, in this series focused on religion and medical practice, it noticeably lacking in this book as opposed to the first two. With distance comes a clearer understanding of all aspects major social conflicts, allowing a fuller narrative.
Gordon handled well the health care debate and the touchy (to understate) issue of abortion. But as I said, it suffers from lack of distance from the issues. Reading "Matters of Choice" just two decades after it was written and set it comes across as myopic and dated, which neither of the earlier books did despite being 1000 and 150 years ago. It could be my or any current reader's first hand experience of the time, but I think it's mostly because the social issues of the third book hadn't yet and still haven't been resolved in any sense. The author manages to make the characters in the first and second books fully involved in and affected by the conflicts and problems of their day, but the advantage of knowing the outcome becomes obvious on reading this last book.
The second main issue is the often-seen problem of a man writing a woman's perspective. There are certain thing universal to all humans, and some men can write women characters well, but the female elements of this main character's identity are most often clichéd, "I am woman hear me roar" archetypal feminist descriptions, or as in the case of her sexuality just conveniently ignored. This aspect of the book reinforces the adage of "write what you know," though I understand some of the absurdity in that statement when I enjoy so much his writing about a character in the early 1000s. Maybe a better way to put it is that the author excels at researching and bringing the reader into another time, but lacks the research or understanding to relate as deeply to another gender.
It's an interesting book, with a mid-90s perspective on the health care and abortion debates, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first two books. However, unlike the first two in the trilogy, I would never recommend it on its own merits.

Nada destacable a reseñar... bastante estándar. Poco peso de toda la historia de la saga familiar detrás. Algunos giros argumentales interesantes, eso sí.
En general me ha gustado más que "Chamán", que se me hizo muy largo, pero no tanto como "El médico", para mí el mejor de la trilogía.
Al menos ya puedo decir que me he leído los tres :)

Me faltaba este libro "más moderno" que salió muchos años más tarde de mi lectura de la primera y segunda novela dela triologia y esto no podía ser... tenia que leerlo porque Noah Gordon es para mí uno de los grandes (aunque no todo lo que escribe me encanta).
Sin duda me ha gustado el toque de continuidad muy muy leve que le ha dado con el "Don" (no he podido evitar esbozar una sonrisa con nostalgia) pero soy de los que opinan que me ha faltado algo más y que no es el broche "perfecto" para la triolgia.
Este libro no se basa tanto en la historia de los avances médicos sino que nos explica el sistema sanitario estadounidense. Al igual que Obama ha intentado establecer un sistema de seguridad social que cubra a toda la población, Clinton ya lo intentó durante sus años como presidente y en esos años se desarrolla la historia de este libro. La verdad que tras leerlo uno se alegra de tener el sistema que tenemos, por muchos fallos que pueda tener.
El tema del aborto volverá a surgir y veremos diferentes opiniones sobre el tema en función de las creencias de cada personaje hasta que al final tendrá una importancia crucial en el desarrollo de la historia. No veremos un final feliz, tampoco triste...pero este libro nos deja con una sensación agridulce.
En definitiva, el libro no está a la altura de los dos primeros de la saga. No es que no me haya gustado, pero cuando has leído los dos primeros las comparaciones son inevitables. Creo que al no tener ese componente histórico ha perdido encanto. Además es evitable al no ser necesario leer todos para entender la historia.

R.J.s Geschichte gefiel mir besser als Shamans und auch irgendwie besser als die von Rob. Eine starke Frau, die ihren Weg geht und zu sich selbst findet. Auch wenn es sich nach 50 Seiten schon einmal wie ein Ende anfühlte. Es kam auch noch Drama zwischendurch, das ich nicht gebraucht hätte, die Aufarbeitung war dann wieder okay. Aber leider hat das Ende mir das Buch ein bisschen verleidet. R.J. schien sich gerade gefunden zu haben und dann schmeißt ein Ereignis (

Politisches Pamphlet als Groschenroman
Dieses Buch ist das schlimmste was man der Medicus-Reihe antun konnte, hätte Gordon sich doch bloß entschlossen nach der Schamane aufzuhören. Nachdem ich die beiden ersten Teile der Trilogie gelesen hatte, war es nur selbstverständlich, dass ich auch den dritten und letzten Teil lesen würde. Zwar gab es Hinweise, dass dieser letzte Teil nicht so gut wäre wie die ersten beiden, aber dass er derartig übel wäre, hätte ich nicht erwartet. Teilweise mag das daran liegen, dass ein Buch das in der Gegenwart spielt nicht sinnvoll an die beiden Vorgänger anschließen kann - das wirkliche Problem ist aber ganz ein anderes: Noah Gordon schreibt ein politisches Pamphlet indem er die amerikanische Politik anklagt kein gutes Gesundheitssystem für die ärmsten zu haben und indem er einseitig Stellung bezieht gegen die Abtreibungsgegner in den USA. Es ist nicht wesentlich ob er damit recht hat oder nicht, die Art der Darstellung ist das Problem. Er beschreibt einseitig und oberflächlich beide Themen, kein Blick auf die andere Seite keine Analyse der tiefergehenden Schichten. Verschlimmert wird das Ganze dadurch, dass der einzige Unterschied zu den als Groschenromane erhältlichen Arztromanen die deutlich bessere Sprache des Autors ist und dass er die Story über 400 Seiten verschleppt. Ansonsten aber gibt er sich ganz dem Oberflächlichen hin.
Eine junge Ärztin gerade von ihrem Lebensgefährten getrennt zieht in die Provinz und trifft dort einen Witwer mit seiner Tochter. Sie verliebt sich in den Mann - der jahrelang versuchte den Tod seiner Frau im Alkohol zu ertränken - und findet auch bald Anschluss an die Tochter. Bei einer Abtreibung, die "natürlich" die einzig richtige Alternative ist, stirbt das Mädchen. Der Mann bekommt einen Rückfall und flüchtet wieder in seine Scheinwelt. Die Ärztin wird noch stärker und wird die Heldin der ganzen Gegend, die sie betreut - denn schließlich ist sie es die viele Ortsansässige gratis behandelt, weil viele Arme ja keine andere Chance haben, medizinische Mindestversorgung zu erhalten. Ach ja den roten Faden gibt es auch - Roberta J. Cole besitzt auch die Gabe der Coles und kann fühlen wie die Lebensenergie den Körper verlässt - dadurch rettet sie sogar zwei Leben. Und dann kommt natürlich noch das Skalpell des Robert J. Cole vor, das von Generation an Generation vererbt wird. Sonst erinnert allerdings nichts an die grandiosen Vorgängerwerke.
Fazit: Die Geschichte ist so schlecht, dass sie sich trotz der Tatsache sprachlich in Ordnung zu sein nicht mehr als den einen Mindeststern verdient. Ich kann nur empfehlen, die Finger davon zu lassen und die Medicus-Saga als Zweiteiler im Kopf zu behalten, die aus wunderbaren Büchern besteht.

This was totally different than Noah Gordon's first two in the series. That, I'm afraid, made it hard to get into, as I loved the history in the two earlier books. I also felt that this book focused too much on politics of the day, abortion clinics, health care problems in modern times. I suppose it was just too real to life for me to really enjoy it. Thus, the 3 stars. And I almost didn't finish it, so I guess I liked it enough to find out what happened.

Fin de la trilogía y digno fin. Trama ya en tiempos “actuales”, Gordon cierra la saga con las virtudes y los defectos de los dos anteriores.
Fue por esta trilogía por lo que cogió fama este autor no muy prolífico.
(Aunque las notas en GR no sean muy buenas a mi me gustó mucho La Bodega, tb de este autor)

4,5 estrellas. De la trilogía me ha parecido el más flojo incluido el final.

I liked this book very much. It is the story of RJ Cole, doctor. This is the last book of a trilogy about the Drs. Cole. The first two were about lands far away and long ago. The other docs were men and RJ is a woman. She has inherited "the Gift" that some of her ancestors had, in that she can feel the imminent death of a person simply by holding their hands and sensing the outcome of their health.
There is alot going on in this book. Three women have been friends for many years and we follow their struggles as they become doctors and the paths they choose in their lives and careers.
RJ eventually becomes a country doctor after leaving a bad marriage and a career in Boston. Her father is a good mentor and she confides in him and has a good relationship with him. He is not sure about her decision but supports her. She does well in the country and is well received after some time.
She has a love interest, David in her life and it is complicated and becomes more so as the story moves along. He has a daughter, Sara, who is wary of hert at first, but then accepts her into their lives. Then there is tragedy and you must keep reading...
She volunteers in an abortion clinic. I sighed as I read that part and it is part of a fallen world, so I guess the author must have included it for a reason.
For awhile, she lives alone in this house on the verge and the lyrical language of her life is truly poetical. The imagery that comes to mind when reading all the outdoor scenes is really lovely. You can close your eyes and feel like you're right there. Beautiful!!

For awhile, she lives alone in this house on the verge and the lyrical language of her life is truly poetical. The imagery that comes to mind when reading all the outdoor scenes is really lovely. You can close your eyes and feel like you're right there. Beautiful!!
I was sorry to see it end, but, alas, there are several more books by Noah Gordon that I haven't yet read!!

Un libro muy ameno y de fácil lectura, te atrapa al instante y jamas aburre, es el cierre de la trilogía de la familia Colé y es muy, muy diferente de el médico y chamán asi que puedo entender por que a muchas personas no les gusta, pero para mi al contrario este cambio de escenarios me resulto atrayente.
Ubicado en la época no actual pero si moderna, nos lleva por la vida de una.mujer que lleva el peso de venir de una Dinastía de grandes doctores y que además lleva el nombre de un muy reconocido ancestro y aún así sobrelleva de gran manera esta situación con sus propios problemas personales, laborales y éticos, a mi me deja un buen sabor de boca.

Ansiado tercer volumen de la trilogía de "El médico". Tal y como le ocurre a "Chamán", la segunda parte, no tiene nada que hacer frente al primero. Se convierte además en un libro denuncia contra la situación de la medicina pública en los EE.UU. Hay libros mejores, pero este se deja leer y es entretenido. Rob J no me gusta nada como protagonista. Es una mentirosa. Es falsa. La verdad es que el autor podría haberse esforzado un poco más con el personaje protagonista del cierre de una (pretendida) gran trilogía.

While I appreciate the author's efforts in bringing his saga about generations of Cole family physicians into the 20th century, this book sure seemed like a novel in search of a plot. The ending just sort of ran out of steam as though Gordon got really, really tired of RJ & everyone else. I know I did.

R.J. Cole ist Anwältin geworden und hat damit die Tradition der Ärzte-Dynastie der Coles gebrochen. Schnell wird ihr der Job aber zu trocken und sie entdeckt die "Gabe" der Coles in sich, zu spüren, wie viel Leben noch im Menschen ist. Sie widmet ihr Leben doch der Medizin.
Nach ihrer Scheidung und Anfeindungen, weil sie Abtreibungen durchführt gibt sie den Traum von der großen Karriere im Bostoner Krankenhaus auf und zieht aufs Land, um dort eine Praxis zu eröffnen.
Dort muss sie sich behaupten, mit den Eigenheiten der Menschen zurechtkommen und entdeckt wie schlecht es um das Gesundheitssystem in den USA steht, wenn Nutztiere oft bessere medizinische Versorgung genießen, als die Menschen selbst. Sie lernt aber auch die Nähe zu den Menschen zu schätzen und geht darin auf wirklich zu helfen.
Auch in ihrer Beziehung zum David ist sie glücklich wie schon lange nicht mehr, bis seine Tochter ihre Hilfe braucht. Aber dafür muss sie David hintergehen...
Das Buch ist genauso informativ wie die beiden Vorgänger, spricht Probleme in der Medizin und in der Gesellschaft an, so wie das Gesundheitssystem und seine Schwächen. Erschreckend, wenn man sieht, dass sich in den USA 2019 nicht viel geändert hat, und das Buch, bis auf Kleinigkeiten, auch heute spielen könnte.
R.J. ist menschlich und glaubhaft, vor allem ihr Engagement und ihre Hilfsbereitschaft sind beeindruckend. Aber sie hat auch eine fast übermenschliche Art, was manchmal etwas übertrieben wirkt.
Abgesehen davon, ist aber alles realistisch und bildhaft dargestellt.
Atmosphärisch unterscheidet sich der dritte Teil aber von den ersten Zwei. Was vorher abenteuerlich war, wirkt hier melancholisch erzählt, was zum größten Teil am lebhaften, historischen Setting beim "Medicus" und beim "Schamanen" liegt, und dagegen die Landidylle hier, etwas abfällt.
Es plätschert ein wenig, ist aber flüssig zu lesen und einfach sehr ruhig. Gutes Buch, lesenswert aber kein Muss. Und mit dem abrupten Ende kann ich mich im Nachhinein gut abfinden.

Der dritte Teil der "Medicus-Reihe" hat mit seinen Vorgängern so rein gar nichts mehr zu tun und das fand ich am Anfang des Hörbuchs auch recht befremdlich. Aber je weiter ich gehört hatte und als ich mich geistig davon verabschiedet hatte, dass dieses Buch Teil der Reihe ist, hat es mir doch sehr gut gefallen.
Es spiel in unserer Zeit und man begleitet die Ärztin RJ Cole auf ihrem Weg als Hausärztin in einem kleinen Dorf Amerikas und wie sie zu diesem Job kam. Ich fand die Dinge, die ihr dort widerfahren und die Situationen in denen sie sich befand doch recht authentisch und musste immer mal wieder schmunzeln, weil ich das ein oder andere auch selbst so erlebt habe. Es werden einfach die Höhen aber auch die Tiefen des Hausarztdaseins erzählt und natürlich darf eine kleine Liebesgeschichte dabei nicht fehlen. Diese war zwar teilweise etwas schnulzig, aber es ging grade noch 😉
Rundherum hab ich das Buch gerne gelesen bzw. gehört aber mit dem Medicus hatte es leider so gar nichts mehr zu tun.

I've never given a 5 star to a book and I've read many books! I absolutely loved this story. To go from the other two wonderful books in the genre of historical fiction to writing in the "NOW" era so proficiently is a wonder to me. Especially writing about a woman from a male author's point of view I was very impressed! I was so fascinated by the character I wanted to be there with her, fishing in the river and building that bridge!! I've been somewhat of a tomboy all my life and I could so identify with the character, in the fact that I believe there is nothing a woman can't do if she puts her heart to it! Thank you Mr Gordon you have reinforced that conviction in me!!

Worth reading if you have started the series. But, it does not live up to my expectations after the first two books. For those reviewers who found the book liberally biased and the main character to be far too liberal, I wonder at their finding it so or not expecting it to be so. After all, the first two books featured main characters who were quite liberal when viewed from the point of time the books were set.

What a disappointment! A terrible ending to a trilogy (the first two books were wonderful). I know he was trying to make a statement about abortion and Pro-Choice (and I am Pro-Choice) but this book makes a strong statement against abortion. I don't think that was his intention, but in any case, I disliked this book. Too bad, because the HeartRocks were cute.

Once again, Noah Gordon wraps a sense of modern reality in the story of the Coles. For me, personally, this wasn't the brightest of the trilogy, but that is most likely due to the fact that it is set in 'today's world. My knowledge is deeper about the issues, so R.J's experiences were not unexpected as it relates to the practice of medicine. I still thoroughly enjoyed the book.

I enjoyed this book, but it is not quite what u was expecting, since the first two books in the series were historical fiction and this was contemporary. The topic was a difficult one to tackle. I applaud Noah Gordon for doing so, but can see how he might alienate some of his readership with the views expressed.

Como si el orden de llegada coincidiera con mi gusto literario, La doctora Cole se queda unas cuantas cabezas por detrás de sus predecesores El médico y Chamán.
El autor pone encima de la mesa el debate sobre el aborto, pero el envite se queda quizá un poco corto.
De todos modos, se lee fácil y merece vivir en nuestras bibliotecas.

This is a strong, dramatic story about a woman doctor making tough moral decisions. It has good medical descriptions, and hits home with small-town life and living green! Good ethical questions and soul-searching!

Después de tanto tiempo he podido concluir la historia de la Familia Cole, o no?!! Jajaja. Siempre es de mucho placer leer a Noah Gordon, sus libros son geniales y llenos de esa magia que te envuelve e invita a pedir más. Gran libro. Excelente trilogía!

I loved this book so much. It touches some subjects which I consider very important and it is as well-written as the 2 first books of the saga.
