Persephone
Persephone is an ordinary girl, which is exactly what is bothering her. i need to pick up more books that i know nothing about
because this was fantastic. it's a loose retelling of the greek myth of hades and persephone and it was just a complete delight. the art style and the vibe of the story reminded me a LOT OF studio ghibli/hayao miyazaki.
i personally find that a lot of standalone graphic novels feel incomplete and rushed but this was amazing start to finish. i loved the simplicity of the narrative and i liked the contrast in familial relationships that was presented. i don't want to be bold but i think this might be my favorite graphic novel that i've read this year.
i genuinely couldn't recommend this enough... and now i think i might need to own a copy.

I LOVED this reimagining of the Persephone myth! The art style is very cute and whimsical, each page was such a treat. If I could jump inside and live in this book forever, I totally would. All the characters were so interesting and the setting was so intricately drawn!
Persephone is definitely catered towards the middle grade and younger YA age range. But if you're a fan of Adventure Time or Studio Ghibli, then you'll definitely enjoy this graphic novel too!

Llevaba tiempo con esta novela gráfica pendiente en mi estantería y ¡ojalá la hubiera leído antes!
Me ha gustado un montón, pero sobre todo me ha sorprendido en todos los aspectos, ya que está ambientada en el mito clásico pero le da una vuelta de tuerca y el autor crea una historia muy original y diferente a lo que esperaba.
Algo que me ha encantado son los detalles de cada viñeta. Cómo he podido conocer Eleusis e Infierno y sus personajes. No sé, pero el arte que transpira cada página es una pasada.
En esta historia conoceréis a Perséfone, ella es la hija adoptiva de Deméter. Vive junto a su madre en Eleusis, pero un día es secuestrada y es llevaba a Infierno por un malvado plan. Allí descubrirá la realidad de su existencia, qué es lo que lleva 15 años sucediendo y por qué ha llegado allí.
La verdad es que la trama te mantiene muy enganchada. Perséfone es un personaje muy carismático, pero todos los personajes son muy especiales, sobre todo los que nos encontraremos en Infierno haciendo compañía a Perséfone.
Sin duda es una historia que recomiendo y que os va a sorprender.

An awkward adaptation of the Greek myth of Persephone in the underworld into a very bland fantasy world setting that mixes modern day diners with sword wielding mages. The story is dull, the characters flat, and the art vague and sketchy. Meh.

This is a VERY loose retelling of what we know of Persephone. Spoilers!!
Two factors make this story totally different from what we know. #1: Hades is long dead. #2: Persephone is a child.
It makes for an interesting mythology remix. The art is charming—it reminds me of a rougher Adventure Time. This one was an impulse buy because I liked the cover (a common trap for me!).
Ultimately, the story is about Persephone finding her own path outside of her mother’s impressive shadow. But it’s also about her bond with her mother. Persephone loves and respects Demeter, and struggles to find her own calling given that her talents are way different than her mother and she’s unable to follow in her footsteps. There’s no forced marriage plot, which makes for a safer modern children’s story.
I’d say this is a middle school / YA age range. I’d lean more towards middle school for most of it except for the theme of self-discovery / identity, which is more of an adolescent thing. It’d work for both groups.

Conocemos así a Perséfone, una joven bastante común que habita en Eliseus junto a su madre, la poderosa maga Deméter. Siendo hija de la famosa maga, todos esperan de ella una fuerza y unos poderes que no tiene. Esta totalmente frustrada. Además, unas pesadillas recurrentes la persiguen todas las noches. Perséfone descubrirá la verdad sobre los orígenes de su nacimiento en una aventura que la llevará hasta Infierno, el otro lado del mundo que solo se cuenta en las leyendas de Eliseus.
La historia, sencilla, bastante predecible y con unas últimas páginas bastante apresuradas, es lo suficientemente interesante para el lector gracias al mundo creado por Loïc y sus personajes. Entre medieval, victoriana e incluso con toques de finales del siglo XX, la mezcla de mitología con fantasía supone una inmersión total en este nuevo universo. Loïc consigue construir todo un universo con referencias al mito griego, pero que a la larga, distan bastante del mismo para convertirse en una rica entidad propia.
Si algo termina de hacer destacar Perséfone sobre otros títulos es su arte. Combinando el gusto por el lápiz quebrado del BD francés con el diseño más cercano al manga japonés, Loïc genera una fusión única y atractiva. El francés dibuja con agrado las batallas, repletas de intensidad, posturas y expresiones fáciles de seguir. Pero también logra una ambientación abrumadora, repleta de entramados y fondos recargados con detalle.
Puede que pierda el timón del ritmo en el último cuarto, apresurando sobremanera lo hechos que podían desarrollarse durante unas páginas más, pero la lectura no pierde fuerza ni interés en ningún momento. Ojalá leamos alguna vez nuevas aventuras de Perséfone por Infierno y Eliseus. O quizás, de otros personajes.

Perséfone, una novela gráfica escrita y dibujada por Loïc Locatelli-Kournwsky. Ha sido una historia interesante al estar ambientada en el mito de Hades y Perséfone, ya que desde hace mucho tiempo que me gusta todo ese mundo, y no podía dejar escapar la oportunidad de leer esta obra. Me ha sorprendido, aunque haya sido una lectura corta y me haya dejado con ganas de saber más, sus personajes me han conquistado. Perséfone es muy valiente a pesar de recalcar su torpeza y Deméter aunque parezca una mujer sin corazón es la más protectora de todas. En definitiva, "Perséfone" es una joya que muchos tenéis que leer, puesto que todos los dibujos están a color y contiene unos bocetos poco comunes. 4,5/5 estrellas

Tengo que decir que Perséfone ha sido una novela gráfica que me ha flipado, es una auténtica belleza, una reinterpretación del mito de lo más original y que encierra una historia llena de magia, con personajes estupendos; no te dejará indiferente.

I'm giving this two stars because the art is charming. That said, this is barely a retelling and more a story about a kid with the same name. It loses the sensuality of the myth and the romance many prefer in retellings, focusing on being an anti-war PSA. I didn't finish it.

¡Que historia! No era lo que esperaba, pero aun así me ha fascinado todo incluyendo las hermosas ilustraciones. Como se habrán dado cuenta, esta novela gráfica es un retelling de la famosa Perséfone del mito griego. Tiene unos cambios radicales en cuanto a los personajes, pero igual me encantó.

siento que se sucedía todo demasiado rápido but i mean… it is a graphic novel. solo sí que el pacing se me ha hecho incluso de MÁS de rápido.

Le pongo tres estrellas por los dibujos porque la historia en sí me ha parecido muy meh. Es curiosa como hace la reinterpretación del mito pero realmente la narrativa deja mucho que desear. No empaticé con lo que estaba ocurriendo.

Persephone is a schoolgirl whose mother, Demeter, is a famous soldier and magician who helped defeat Hades. On a school trip, Persephone is kidnapped, taken to Hades, and forced to eat magic fruit that won't allow her to leave. Hades isn't all bad, though, and she becomes friends with the locals, including the prince and his advisor, a talking cat who is also a magician.
The story is interesting - close to the original myth, but unique enough that I didn't know what was going to happen next. The art is very soft and fluid, creating expressive characters who made me laugh out loud several times.

Me encanta como dibuja Loïc Locatelli. Y esta especie de retelling del mito de Persephone le viene como anillo al dedo. La historia es sencillita y es bastante deducible que sucederá pero aún así la historia es simpática y el worldbuilding lo suficientemente interesante como para tenerte enganchado.

Persephone is a very charming story of seeing the 'other' side of a conflict and finding yourself. Very loosely based on the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone, it takes the names and locations to build a new story of it's own.
Visually it is very reminiscent of a Ghibli movie, building on a magical world filled with life with characters that seek for the good in things and legends that are larger than life.
The more specific design and illustrative aspects were interesting. The drawing style isn't super polished but it didn't need to be. It told the story perfectly and was able to capture emotions really well. It is a testament that things don't have to be realistic or perfect to tell a dynamic emotive story effectively. The locations were absolutely charming.
I enjoyed looking at it very much and the story was a pleasant surprise!

it’s a coming of age story at its center, heavily featuring a mother and daughter relationship as well as a place with a lot of history of war. it’s filled with absolutely gorgeous art and has a sweet and exciting plot.
it’s nothing groundbreaking but if it sounds interesting to you I would definitely recommend it!
read for the reading rush, challenge to read a book with purple on the cover.

“Perséfone” ha sido una novela que me ha encantado, es una obra llena de magia que se lee en nada, me hubiese gustado que fuese más largo.
Se trata de una adaptación del mito griego de Perséfone, donde una hija de una bruja vive una serie de aventuras en un mundo dividido en dos. Nuestra protagonista viaja al inframundo para llegar a conocerse a sí misma.
Tengo que destacar las preciosas ilustraciones de esta obra que junto a la historia crean un ambiente mágico que me recuerda muchísimo a Studio Ghibli. Por ello mismo he disfrutado tantísimo con esta novela, pocos logran crear ese maravilloso escenario que hace que no puedas dejar de mirar o en este caso de leer.
La protagonista me ha encantado, se trata de un personaje muy bien construido que a lo largo de la historia lleva a cabo una búsqueda de identidad que dota a la obra de una mayor profundidad.
Si es cierto que me hubiese gustado que se profundizase en el resto de personajes ya que muchos de ellos se han quedado en un segundo plano.
En general ha sido una novela gráfica con la que he disfrutado mucho y bastante divertida, os la recomiendo.

What a gorgeous reimagining of a classic tale!
”When she gazes at me... when she smiles... that round face of hers makes the pain from my wounds go away.”
The style that this is drawn in made me linger a lot on each page. It reminded me of Ghibli, but rougher, grittier to fit the mood of Persephone’s story in this tale.
I found myself enjoying the fact that this reimagining focused less on Hades/Persephone and more on the mother-daughter dynamic of Demeter and Persephone. The great love they had for each other and Persephone’s struggle to define herself in her mother’s shadow was fantastic to watch develop. I also have to admit that Demeter was a straight up badass and I loved watching her fight.
It’s not the tale we’re all used to, but I really, really liked this new take! Will keep an eye out for more of Loïc’s works where possible. ✨

Yeah, not a retelling, just borrowing some bits and pieces of the original mythology. Lovely comic though. The style and story and the protagonist remind me of Ghibli movies and the ending is pretty wholesome. This was an easy, enjoyable read.
