gather ‘round, booknerds!
this is a collection of tom gauld’s cartoons, most of which (all of which?) appeared in the guardian, and most of which are book-centric in theme and somewhere on the spectrum of insightful <————————>absurd in tone.

Yeah… literary gag strips aren’t very funny. I did laugh once at the Bad Writing Course joke but that’s one out of an entire book’s worth. The gags in general are more thoughtfully amusing and/or clever rather than actually LOL funny.
So Tom Gauld’s back with another book of strips where he makes wry observations on all things literary, deconstructs genres and tropes, and so on - basically more of the same stuff we saw in his previous collection, You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack.
Presented as a clump like this, it’s easy to clock the formula for his cartoons: anachronistic artistic styles, silly alternate titles, meta-commentary, etc. so it gets dull and predictable fairly quickly. And like most strip collections, the stop-start style doesn’t make for the smoothest reading experience either.
There are some creative ideas here and Gauld’s drawings are cute but for the most part the strips are unsubstantial, throwaway and immediately forgettable. Baking with Kafka is a pretty banal comics collection overall - the least interesting book I’ve read by Tom Gauld so far.

Tom Gauld produced these cartoons and short comics mostly for The Guardian, some for The New Yorker and NY Times. He has a sort of literary bent in much of his work. I have read his Goliath, a wry story from the perspective of Goliath, and liked it a lot. Subtle, understated, elegant. I read his Mooncop and thought those elements worked less to his advantage in that story. Those are two graphic novels. The other collection of his cartoons/comics I read and liked quite a bit is You're Just Jealous of my Jetpack. This one, Baking with Kafka, is almost all about books, yay for book-lovers like me. You can see them as part of a trend including things like Out-of-Print T shirts and memes with books piled in the shape of chairs or whatever. And why not?

Nikoho, kto sa už niekedy chystal na trojdňový predĺžený víkend na horách a nabalil si do kufra štyri knihy, jednu, čo práve číta, druhú, pretože tá, čo práve číta má už len 124 strán do konca, ďalšiu, lebo čo ak sa ukáže, že tá čo si vzal, keby náhodou dočítal tú, čo práve číta, je hovadina a ešte jednu, lebo človek nikdy nevie, a potom zistil, že tá posledná sa tam ani bohovi nevopchá, takže naveľa naveľa odtiaľ s ťažkým srdcom vytiahol oteplovačky ešte sa mu aj pekne urobilo miestečko na jedného malého Pratchetta, len keby nezavadzala tá blbá kefa na vlasy, ale zas nemôže mať človek všetko, aj tak sa ide len na tri dni a veď prinajhoršom si dá na hlavu čiapku, proste nikoho, komu sa už stalo niečo takéto alebo prípadne takéto, Pečeme s Kafkou nenechá úplne chladného.
Je to proste kniha tak predchnutá láskou ku knihám, že mi je až blbé dávať tomu nižšie hodnotenie, tak zostávam pri troch, ale popravde, asi dvadsať obrázkov má zaujímavú myšlienku, na piatich-šiestich som sa fakt že pobavila, zvyšných 120 strán mi prišlo ako celkom milé obrázky, ktorých pointu som už videla nakreslenú, napísanú alebo zhmotnenú niekde inde, nejak lepšie.

«печемо з кафкою» – це півтори сотні коміксів тома голда (здебільшого) про книжечки і письменників, і те, що більшість із цих коміксів я вже бачила в «гардіані», абсолютно не завадило рукам потягти цей том на книгарняну касу. як і те, що він уже на полиці був трохи зачитаний. як і ціна в перерахунку на тисячі знаків. одне слово, це книжка, без якої в господарстві цілковито можна було обійтися – але навіщо?
тепер треба тільки зачитати її рівномірно, щоб сторінки розгорталися з більш-менш однаковою ймовірністю, і можна буде ворожити на ній із довколаробочих приводів.
(і, здається, «ой леле» з цього перекладу – це перше доречне «ой леле», яке мені траплялося поза сентиментальною прозою).

Чудова річ. Том Ґолд відомий тим, що робив ілюстрації для ключових видань світу, зокрема й The New Yorker. Так він відомий своїми короткими й водночас вельми специфічними розповідями, серед яких варто виокремити "Ґоліафа". Також Ґолд відомий своїм авторським стилем, що відразу зробило його ключовим автором у Dawn & Quarterly. Особисто мені його стиль нагадує наскельні малюнки із домішками сучасного мінімалістичного дизайну, де підкреслюється основне, а зайве - відсівається. Якщо ви хоча б раз побачили стиль Ґолда, то далі будете впізнавати усюди.
Тут же зібрано сторінкові стріпи про книжки, письменників та загалом культуру, часто високу. Це не можна вважати колекцією гумористичних і смішних стріпів, а більше витончених, кмітливих, неоднозначних і, на мій погляд, абсурдних. Деякі взагалі будуть зачинені для тих, хто не в темі (наприклад, стріпи про Джеймса Балларда чи Семюеля Беккета зрозуміють лише поціновувачі їхньої творчості) тому Ґолд, безумовно, балансує на межі різних авдиторій і, не побоюсь цього слова, дискурсів. Окремо варто підкреслити референси до відомих фігур у художній літературі, як-от Ніл Ґейман і, звісно ж, Франц Кафка, який завжди пов'язаний із меланхолією, самотністю і нігілізмом. Саме ці теми розкручує Ґолд, робить їх справді абсурдними та кумедними.
Звісно, центральним тут є дискурс бібліофільства, тому окрема шана "Видивництву" за розміщення стріпу про різного рангу книжки в бібліотеці. Це один із моїх улюблених стріпів взагалі, який був чи не першим у творчості Ґолда. Дивуєшся фантазії автора, який настільки несподівано підходить до теми книжок, що такий підхід лишається ще довго в голові. Що вже казати про винахідливий підхід до структури оповіді, жанрології, тобто внутрішнього боку книги, її анатомічного наповнення так би мовити. Відразу відчувається наскільки Ґолд любить книжки як матеріальний ресурс або особливий продукт людської цивілізації, який об'єднує навколо себе особливих людей. У цьому теж є певна елітарність зібрання, але вона далеко не нав'язлива, а пунктирна, як і багато тут речей.
З одного боку, кожен знайде собі щось особливе, буде повертатись до цієї книжки неодноразово літніми чи зимовими вечорами, як описано в українському виданні. З іншого ж боку, зчитати усі змісти зможуть далеко не всі, тому, на мій погляд, це є основною вразливістю роботи/робіт Тома Ґолда. У мене часто не було жодної реакції після прочитання: ні сміху, ні сліз, ні подиву. Знову повертався до стріпу, але ніяк не міг збагнути його особливість. Благо, що таких пересічних стріпів значно менше, аніж вдалих, але цього може цілком вистачити, щоб відлякати читачів. Усе ж, для мене це дуже приємне, затишне та особисте читання, яке створило й створюватиме настрій, тому збірку Тома Ґолда спокійно можна вважати настільною книгою бібліофіла.

Комікси Тома Ґолда – це щось прекрасно-дотепно-іронічно неймовірне. І книжка «Печемо з Кафкою» просто мусить бути у кожного книголюба. Я сміялася, перечитувала, зачитувала вголос чоловіку, ділилася з вами в історіях і тепер готова хапати цю книжку кожного разу, коли маю поганий настрій.
Я дуже люблю іронію. Тому проглядати і читати «Печемо з Кафкою», де автор сміється над звичками книголюбів, над проблемами письменників, над історією і над мистецтвом було направду прекрасно, сумно і смішно водночас. Взагалі мене важко розсмішити, але тут автор дуже вдало обрав тему книжок і письменництва.
Хотіла цю книжку (та й будь-яку іншу цього автора) ще кілька років тому, коли випадково побачила дуже смішну ілюстрацію Тома Ґолда. Потім книжка дуже невдало загубилася в моєму безкінечному списку бажанок, тож дяки @vydavnytstvo, що вони похопилися мене рятувати �� видали цю книжку українською. Хоч мені й досі якось аж незручно, що українською книжка коштує дорожче, ніж англійською. Та, знаєте, не шкодую жодної витраченої гривні.

In cucina con Kafka, con un’introduzione di Francesco Guglieri davvero originale e ironica che ben si adatta all’opera di Tom Gauld, racchiude una serie di strisce del fumettista scozzese pubblicate in formato orizzontale, seguendo quindi il senso di lettura delle vignette.
In questo fumetto Tom Gauld si sofferma soprattutto sulla letteratura, in tutti i suoi aspetti, dal mondo editoriale a quello dei lettori. L’autore affronta anche tematiche politiche, la tecnologia, il modo di comportarsi della società contemporanea, i luoghi comuni, le mode e le tendenze del momento.
Lo stile è piuttosto minimal, sia nei testi (piuttosto concisi) sia nel disegno: le forme sono geometriche, i colori sono tenuti e senza sfumature, caratteristica presente in quasi ogni tavola è il tratteggio che dà profondità e ombreggiatura. Questo è il primo fumetto che leggo di Tom Gauld, ma se online dovessi vedere altre sue tavole le riconoscerei subito: lo stile è assolutamente inconfondibile e personale.
Devo dire che le prime strisce mi hanno spiazzata, nel senso positivo del termine, facendomi sghignazzare, però poi nel momento in cui si capisce il loro meccanismo di base si prevede la battuta della vignetta successiva. In generale non ci sono state tavole che mi hanno fatto sganasciare dalle risate, ma semplicemente sorridere.
Non mi aspettavo poi la presenza di strisce che toccano tematiche attuali importanti e che portano il lettore alla riflessione, una piacevole sorpresa.
Per quanto mi riguarda In cucina con Kafka non è il fumetto più divertente del mondo, ma è un buon fumetto. Può far sorridere soprattutto i lettori: Tom Gauld si diverte a prenderci in giro con ironia, a buttare su carta le nostre manie e i nostri punti deboli senza osare troppo, senza offendere nessuno e questo fa solo che bene.
In questo fumetto Tom Gauld si sofferma soprattutto sulla letteratura, in tutti i suoi aspetti, dal mondo editoriale a quello dei lettori. Sort of New Yorker humor with extra lots of literary references and absurdity--a dash of Kate Beaton, a touch of Hanawalt, a pinch of Nicholas Gurewitch--work that seems tailor-made for the McSweeney's crowd? (Is this a fair assessment?)
Some really great individual comics in here--smart, bitterly intelligent and playfully astute. But a bit hit or miss as a whole.
I do think it would make a great gift for those who would appreciate his style.

I’m a fan of Tom Gauld’s signature illustration style and his deadpan humour, which usually focuses on reading, books, literature and culture at wide. I’ve enjoyed his previous books “Goliath” (on the biblical personage) and “You’re All Just Jealous of my Jetpack”. As I was leafing through this latest book published in 2017 by Drawn & Quarterly, I was surprised to find I had seen quite a few of these cartoons before, but all was explained: Tom Gauld is a frequent contributor to The Guardian, The New Yorker and The New York Times, and this book is a collection of works which were originally published in those three publications in recent years. All the same, I had not seen most of them before and it was good to revisit those I had, as his cartoons have a quality of timeless classics.
These are cartoons any book lover should enjoy, though maybe too dry and/or literary for some. Tom Gauld is Scottish, and that sense of humour isn’t to everyone’s taste, though it’s safe to say readers of those publications he is regularly featured in, such as me for example, are probably a natural fit. Even as a fan, I found some cartoons were really funny while others fell kind of flat—even geniuses have their less inspired moments. Plenty of great stuff here make it very much worth the effort though.

Entertaining, most likely to be enjoyed by literary enthusiasts, as well as, aspiring authors (despairing of various parts of the writing process).
Five stars for humour in this specific, narrow field. But four overall in the graphic novels category—it's no The Complete Maus or Watchmen.

Where has Gauld been all my life? (... or rather - where have I been?) His collection of book/writing themed cartoons IS both hilarious and ... profound!

Úderné literárně-popkulturní stripy pro knihomol(k)y, které jdou k jádru pudla (má to zpravidla jedno až sedm okének). Nelze v tom nepoznat "humor Guardianu", jelikož to co činí Gauld pro kulturní/literární sekci, dělá v bleděmodrém Squires ve sportovní/fotbalové. Stejný styl, stejný typ ostrého suchého britského humoru.
Některé stripy hraničí s čirou genialitou, většina se "pouze" satiristicky a s nadsázkou trefuje do neduhů čtenářů/autorů/kritiků/sociálních sítí/trolů/klišé apod. Jiné mají nevyužitý potenciál a několik málo se pak zcela míjí účinkem.
Autorovi se daří kombinovat vyloženě dětinské nápady (např. co kdyby postavy austenovských románů komunikovali skrze emodži či Vojna a mír formou clickbaitu) s až překvapivě sofistikovanými i hravými gagy a přitom výsledný dojem nepůsobí jako "každý pes jiná ves", ale soudržně a v jednom autorském stylu.
Krom zmíněné kolísavé kvality a toho, že většina humorů stojí na textu a vizuální stránka je tedy sice krásná ale tak trochu do počtu, tak lze vytknout i to, že v druhé polovině je to už dosti "na jedno brdo variace na cca tucet rozehrávek použitých o xy stripů předtím" čili spíše než dát to na jeden zátah se vyplatí si to rozločit v čase.

Best consumed in small bites so the humor outlasts the sameness of the subject. I love the drawing style and colors, and always enjoy a gentle literary joke.

What a delight! Tom Gauld's comic strips are hilarious and timeless. From the rediscovered classic to the heroes on a quest to the bad writer looking for the next writing workshop, there's a lot of humorous jabs at readers and writers and book lovers in these pages. Some of the humor is very craft-specific and some immediately recognizable by anyone who's ever read a fantasy or murder-mystery or classic novel. Recommended for those who like phone apps, how-to-write books, butlers (of course, butlers!) and banoffee pie.

So good for when you have a moment to read but don't want to get too invested.
A fun collection of Literary comic strip to flip through and reminisce on a Classic, a classic plot device, a classic moment at a literary event, organising the Classics on your bookshelf or a classic writers block. Like all great satire, sometimes a bit close to the truth.... but still hilarious.
Returning this one to the local library with reluctance :D

Una serie di vignette, alcune più taglienti altre un pochino meno, che prendono in giro in maniera intelligente lettori, scrittori ed editori! Una piccola chicca destinata per lo più ad un pubblico già abbastanza esperto in questo ambito. 😊
