The Edge of the World #1

To Know the Dark

Rate this book
Kori could feel the sky grumbling through the tips of her fingers. The Laws made it illegal for her to be curious, but she could sense that there was something badly wrong with the world. She has to face her darkest fears of the terrors that walk at night and of her own growing powers. As she is drawn into a deadly civil war, she cannot know whether her destiny is to save the world or to destroy it. To Know the Dark is a unique blend of science fiction, fantasy and mystery.

Laughter in a crazy world...

Life is too short for bad wine, a home without love or a world without humour.

I write science fiction, except when I'm writing about chess, or fantasy/ horror or spy fiction. Most of all I wrote to put a smile on your face. We may not be able to solve the problems of the world together, but it would be good to have a chuckle about the absurdness of it all.

Think Terry Pratchett/ Monty Python / Douglas Adams ... I'm not as good as any of those but I'm a heck of a lot cheaper.

"Love, Death and Tea" is the story of the world's first pacifist zombie, trying to solve the meaning of life and escape from a corrupt Government whilst constantly being confused by shoelaces.

"Once upon a chess game" is an unique mix of chess puzzles and humour - there is nothing else quite like it.

"Global Domination for Beginners". What would happen if the bad guy in a spy story actually did manage to take over the world? Would it be so bad?

It’s obvious from reading his work that Will Once loves language: the rhythm of the most appropriate words placed in the best order; the nuances and subtle interpretations that such an order can lead the reader to explore; the flow from one sentence to the next; the gentle play of word invention and characterful dialogue. Throughout To Know the Dark he takes this use of language and uses it to drive an intriguing story. I loved the plot, the invention, the pacing, and the characters. Needless to say, I am really looking forward to reading the follow up.

I've always loved fantasy but as I've grown older I tend away from the orcs and elves and swords stuff and have begun to prefer books whose fantasy takes a different form. Here, the little world portrayed begins with a Law. The people learn it, chant it and know it's for their own good. Supposedly. Young Kori, who lives at the edge, knows there's something wrong. The world is out of balance. It's broken. She has a special gift, the Knowing. Bit by bit, the workings of this world trickle through to us. It's a long but exciting story. The people of this world obey the laws and barricade themselves in at night because to be outside in the Dark is to fall prey to the Terrors. Eventually, Kori dares to open a shutter and sees one.

This tale, which asks questions of authority, of the law and of those who try to keep us in our places 'for our own good' is so far up my street that it's banging on the doorknocker. It's a well told and meaty story and is evidently going to have at least a sequel. Highly recommended.

I received an advance copy for review.

I read this at the beta stage and loved the setting, the atmosphere and the sheer invention of it all. It's very different from the author's comic works (which I also thoroughly enjoyed) but for an example of a novel that experiments at the boundaries of the fantasy genre, this is well worth reading.

I'm not really good at leaving reviews, but this was a good book. I genuinely enjoyed it from bringing to end. Please write a sequel, I need it in my life
