Dwadzieścia lat po wybuchu reaktora w Czarnobylu, skutki tej tragedii są wciąż odczuwalne. Nazwany przez Washington Post "człowiekiem-legendą", Igor Kostin 26 kwietnia 1986 roku przeleciał nad elektrownią zaledwie kilka godzin po tym, jak rozpętało się tam piekło. Jedyne zdjęcie, jakie udało mu się wtedy zrobić, obiegło cały świat. Los Kostina połączył się nierozerwalnie z losem Czarnobyla. Wstrząśnięty rozmiarami zdarzenia, reporter pozostał na miejscu, by obserwować ewakuację, rozmawiać z ludźmi, którzy mieli kontakt z radioaktywnymi odpadami (większość z nich potem zmarła). Jego książka to niezwykłe świadectwo katastrofy, spisane i sfotografowane przez jej świadka i uczestnika. Zawiera wiele unikatowych zdjęć.

Moldovan born Igor Kostin turned to photography after completing his military service and whilst working as an engineer. And I guess you could say it was his destiny. Starting off with simple portraits of friends and relatives, he would go on to display his work at exhibitions, before being hired as a copy editor by a TV station, and anchoring a monthly show on photography. After the show was cancelled he put his heart and soul into becoming a professional reporter, as photography was now his strong passion, and five years later, his dream came true. Working in such places as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Afghanistan covering war, with KGB agents watching him he couldn't work with the freedom he so much wanted, but that all changed with the Chernobyl disaster. Which, as in his own words, symbolized the end of the USSR.
This devastating and remarkable book captures in images what others have done in words. Starting off with overhead shots from a helicopter of the site, Kostin would go on to shot an image of the destroyed number four reactor from an adjacent block, and it's here the full magnitude of the event sets in. Following on are photographs in the aftermath of maintenance workers, buses evacuating civilians, of the barren landscapes within the forbidden zones, haunting images of Chernobyl and Pripyat lying dead under a blanket of snow, and who could forget Pripyat's ferris wheel and the ghostly abandoned bumper cars. Images that resonate just as powerfully today. There are those who refused to leave their homes, mostly older folk, who were determined to die in the place where they were born. There is the look on peoples faces that really needs little explanation, as if their hearts are being ripped out right in front of the camera.
But the image that will stay with me, one which deeply moved me, is from when Kostin visited a Belarus Orphanage in 1988, and shows a young infant born seriously disfigured happily smiling.
The publication of this photo in a magazine led to an English family adopting the child.
So if there was a ray of light in this unforgettable book, that was certainly it.

Do połowy myślałam, że nie znajdę tu nic nowego. Jednak autor zaskoczył mnie historią głoszoną przez fotografie, których jest tu bardzo dużo. Również jego życiorys należy do przejmujących.

„Antynuklearna broń: łopata”.
Igor Kostin był świadkiem katastrofy prawie od samego początku. Trafił do Czarnobyla już 26 kwietnia 1986 roku i tego samego dnia wykonał najsłynniejsze zdjęcie czarnobylskiej elektrowni – jedyne zdjęcie wykonane w dniu katastrofy, które udało się zachować. Pozostałe klatki filmu zostały całkowicie prześwietlone z powodu wysokiego promieniowania.
Książka zawiera bardzo dużo zdjęć, pokazujących różne oblicza tej strasznej katastrofy. Zobaczymy ruiny reaktora, ludzi pracujących przy likwidacji szkód, ewakuację mieszkańców, opustoszałe wsie i to, co pozostało po zamieszkujących je ludziach. Tekstu jest w niej mało, co niektórym czytelnikom może trochę przeszkadzać, ale moim zdaniem nie zawsze jest potrzebna ściana tekstu. Te obrazy mówią same za siebie.
Dzięki tym zdjęciom możemy spojrzeć na Czarnobyl z trochę innej perspektywy, zamiast przejmować się budową reaktora i wadami konstrukcyjnymi, zatrzymać się na chwilę i zastanowić nad kruchością naszego życia. Przynajmniej mnie tak nastroiła ta książka. Na szczęście jabłonie kwitną dalej i wydają owoce, nawet mimo niszczycielskiej siły ludzkich błędów.

Ominously Graphic Account of a Forgotten Tragedy ...
I was a sophomore in college on April 26, 1985 when the news of Chernobyl broke. I remember sitting with friends in my dorm room when someone down the hall prompted us to adjust our television's aluminum foil "rabbit ears" to see the news of an explosion at a nuclear reactor in the Soviet Union. Looking back, I recall two simultaneous reactions: 1) This may be serious and 2) It's the Soviet Union, so we'll never hear the truth about what really happened. But, being young and in college (at springtime) on the other side of the world, the importance of Chernobyl as a newsworthy event dissipated almost immediately. Over twenty years later, I finally took an interest in the Chernobyl accident ... after playing two video games that generated a simply amazing first-person "tour" of the Chernobyl plant and the haunting ghost-town of Pripyat (who says video games are mindless?). The scenery in the games generated a craving to learn more about the mysterious events surrounding Chernobyl and the events that followed. In my quest to obtain more knowledge, I wanted a definitive pictorial reference and Igor Kostin's CHERNOBYL: CONFESSIONS OF A REPORTER proved to be an essential resource for me.
The problem I've discovered with Chernobyl is that it doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves. While the accident is always referenced as the "worst nuclear disaster in history", the event, 25 years later, still remains clouded in mystery and for many in the Western Hemisphere, it sadly doesn't even register as a significant event (just ask any college kid). Making matters worse, there is very little photographic evidence to paint a clearer picture of the event and its aftermath (other than the exploitation and exaggeration of Chernobyl by video game developers). This is why I found Igor Kostin's book to be so valuable. Kostin was there, with his camera, in April 1986 and was so touched by the events unfolding that he kept coming back ... even though it almost cost him his life.
CHERNOBYL: CONFESSIONS OF A REPORTER is a phenomenal photographic chronicle of the Chernobyl accident and its impact on the people and places associated with it. While primarily a book of photographs grouped into chapters dedicated to subject-matter, the pictures only tell part of the story. Kostin's words add a significant degree of depth and sadness to the visual presentation. The combination of words and photos paint a much clearer picture of the drama that unfolded at Chernobyl in 1986 and the eerie nature of Soviet Union using humans as fodder in response to a crisis. Starting with the only known picture taken of the Chernobyl plant the day of the explosion (a radiation-hazed aerial view of the gaping hole in the No. 4 reactor), what follows is a gloomy photographic account of what happened after the accident: doomed men (known as "liquidators") assigned to remove the super-deadly radioactive debris from the reactor's core ... the subsequent evacuation of those living within the 30km zone surrounding the crippled plant ... the construction of the concrete and lead sarcophagus meant to contain the still-volatile core ... and the contaminated wasteland that remains. The pictures speak volumes: the photo of men wearing simple masks and gloves while shoveling chunks of highly-radioactive graphite on the roof of the damaged reactor is in direct contrast to the photo of a man testing radiation levels miles away from the plant wearing a fully protective suit. Other photos document meager attempts of Soviet Union to contain the spread of radiation by burying villages and creating graveyards for the multitude of contaminated vehicles, but not the looters scavenging radioactive parts. Photos of an eight-footed foal and a child suffering from mutations serve as examples of anomalies that may be linked to the disaster.
Kostin's photos and accompanying commentary initially reveal a much more chaotic and desperate scenario that I have previously seen, but photos of his subsequent returns to the region reveal the eerie beauty of natures resilience (a radiation warning sign amid a field of yellow flowers) and man's doggedness (elderly villagers fearlessly returning to their contaminated villages). Kostin even documents his own bout with radiation sickness following numerous visits to the region.
CHERNOBYL: CONFESSIONS OF A REPORTER is an excellent graphic account of the disaster in that it provides an up-close viewing of how man contained an unleashed nuclear beast (at least temporarily). While the pictures tell a story, it is the author's brief introductions to each chapter and photo commentary that bring the pictures to life. An impressive book that does more than simply illustrate a sequence of events, CONFESSIONS OF A REPORTER adds scope and gravity to the Chernobyl tragedy.

Definitely, one of my favorite books regarding the catastrophe of Chernobyl. I would say this one and S. Alexievich's book are material, which covers the whole accident very well.
I truly adore Igor Kostin's work. It's really hard to say much. I think this book should be read by many people just to understand the Chernobyl and what stands behind.

A very powerful read that includes, not only the history of the Chernobyl disaster, but the history of the author who was brave and selfless enough to go back again and again over the course of 20 years to document it. The photos range from historically significant, to inspiring, to heartbreaking; the text illuminates just enough of the story. Don't miss this one.

Pod sarkofagiem w Czarnobylu spoczywa odwaga i altruizm.
Żołnierze i ludzie oddali swoje życie, aby ocalić świat przed promieniowaniem i niewiele osób o tym wie.
Z tego powodu ta książka ma znaczenie,dodatkowo jest dobrym sposobem na złożenie hołdu zwykłym bohaterom poprzez słowa i zdjęcia ocalałego.
To najpiękniejsze zdjęcia Czarnobyla i jego katastrofalnych skutków, jakie kiedykolwiek widziałam .
To pokazuje nam “młodym” jaka to była tragedia narodowa dla wszystkich krajów i co tam się działo oraz jak znosili to bezpośredni świadkowie tej tragedii.
Gorąco polecam osobom zainteresowanym katastrofą w Czarnobylu i jej wpływem na środowisko i życie ludzi w tamtych czasach.

The second best Chernobyl book I've read (Chernobyl Prayer is still number 1). The majority of it consists of photos taken by Igor Kostin, but included a short introduction to every chapter. He covers the accident, the aftermath in various forms: the diseases, the machines left behind, and clean-up efforts. Quite a comprehensive overview for a book that's mostly photos.
Definitely a must-read if you're interested in the topic. A lot of it will be familiar if you read it after the HBO miniseries.

Io lo posseggo in italiano, nessuna voglia di fare una nuova schedalibro. Quindi.
Se qualcuno che conoscete vi decanta il nucleare o fosse anche solo possibilista, fateglielo leggere, guardare le fotografie, poi gli proponete di fare una bella centrale vicino al suo ridente paesello o città. Vediamo che vi risponde. La Svizzera dopo Fukushima uscirà dal nucleare in circa 20anni. Tardi, ma non é mai troppo tardi per farlo, se fosse per me domani é già troppo tardi.
La testimonianza di Igor Kostin vale più di qualsiasi discorso.

4,5⭐️ wszystko spoko i bardzo fajna, ale czemu tak mało treści??? Chciałbym żeby była dłuższa, bo była mega ciekawa. I zastanawia mnie jeszcze jedno. Dlaczego autor pisze czasami o sobie w trzeciej osobie? Bardzo nie lubię takiego zabiegu odnoszę wrażenie , że to jakieś hiperbolizowanie własnego ja. Mam wielką nadzieję, że to zmiana w tłumaczeniu, albo czegoś nie zauważyłam i to był cytat a nie fragment napisany przez autora. Co nie zmienia faktu, że treść książki jest świetna i czuję troszkę niedosyt.

Soovisin peale „Rumala lehma“ siiski veel midagi lugeda. Lappasin lugemata raamatute hunnikut ja „Tšernobõli“ raamat jäi näppu. Olin ammu tahtnud seda lugeda. Praegu, kui postitust kirjutama hakkasin, tuli silme ette pilt lendavast (plahvatavast) reaktorist.
Tegemist on fotograafiga, kes korduvalt Tšernobõlis käinud ja olukorda läbi fotokaamera jäädvustada püüdnud. Ta sai ka ise tugevalt kiiritada. Raamat on avadatud 2006. aastal ja seal on kirjas, et arstid ei lubanud tal enam ühtegi milliröntgenit kiiritust saada ehk sel hetkel oli tema Tšernobõli jäädvustustel lõpp.
Kohutav katastroof. Ja süüdi on ju tegelikult inimesed ise: ehituskvaliteet on vilets, kiirustatakse, eiratakse turvanõudeid ning tagatipuks ei olda absoluutselt valmis õnnetusteks. Õudne, kuidas inimesi saadeti katastroofi likvideerima ilma õigete vahenditeta. Mida ma enne ei teadnud, et tegelikult toimus aastaid hiljem ka teises plokis plahvatus. Mitte midagi ei olnud muutunud! Õnneks oli teine õnnetus õnnelikum ja radioaktiivset ainet sealt väidetavalt valla ei pääsenud. Nüüdseks on tuumaelektrijaam täielikult suletud. Piirkonda korraldatakse ekskursioone, aga ma ei ole kindel, kas ma soovin vabatahtlikult minna piirkonda, kust kiirgus kaob ca 24 000 aasta pärast. Aga lugeda tahaks küll veel.

Książkę co prawda przeczytałam w ramach: "Wyzwanie LC marzec 2022 – Wschodnia Europa", ale temat Czarnobyla interesuje mnie, gdyż katastrofa w elektrowni wydarzyła się w trakcie mojego dzieciństwa.
Dodatkowo aktualna sytuacja za naszą wschodnią granicą i to, że elektrownia dostała się w nieodpowiedzialne ręce, wzbudza niepokój i skłania do refleksji, jak niewiele trzeba by zrujnować czyjeś życie, doprowadzić do tragedii, wyeliminować sporą część kraju z użytku na tysiące lat.
Czasami jedno zdjęcie jest w stanie powiedzieć więcej niż tysiąc słów. I właśnie w tej książce reporter ukazał nam katastrofę obrazami z miejsc, ludzi, technicznymi aspektami. Krótkie notatki uzupełniają całą historię.
A zwięzła autobiograficzna notka pokazuje jaką drogę przebył reporter, by być w odpowiednich miejscach, o odpowiednim czasie.
Nie jest to moja pierwsza, i nie ostatnia, książka w tej tematyce, ale na pewno stanowi dobre uzupełnienie wiedzy.
Dodatkowo aktualna sytuacja za naszą wschodnią granicą i to, że elektrownia dostała się w nieodpowiedzialne ręce, wzbudza niepokój i skłania do refleksji, jak niewiele trzeba by zrujnować czyjeś życie, doprowadzić do tragedii, wyeliminować sporą część kraju z użytku na tysiące lat.
Czasami jedno zdjęcie jest w stanie powiedzieć więcej niż tysiąc słów. I właśnie w tej książce reporter ukazał nam katastrofę obrazami z miejsc, ludzi, technicznymi aspektami. Krótkie notatki uzupełniają całą historię.

Książka ta jest dobrym uzupełnieniem mojej wiedzy o Czarnobylu, nie polecałabym jej jednak osobom, które nic nie wiedzą o katastrofie.
Tekstu jest tutaj bardzo mało, informacje są podawane ogólnie. Autor bardziej skupia się na ludziach czy na przyrodzie, nie znajdziemy tu opisów przebiegu katastrofy. Obraz Czarnobyla przedstawia swoimi zdjęciami i krótkimi komentarzami.
To było niesamowite doświadczenie móc zobaczyć ludzi zaangażowanych w powstrzymywanie katastrofy, nawet jeśli tylko na zdjęciach.

This was exactly the book I hoped to find when I went to the library last week. I went to get Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster, but I wanted there to be a book of photographs. The only other book available at the library that day about Chernobyl was this photographic account.
This account was very moving, to see what I have read about and watched on tv. To see the event and the aftermath, and to think that Kostin was one of many willing to give their lives to this catastrophe, and he did it so the world could know it.

Kurb, kuidas ühel riigil on tulnud kannatada ja kuidas alati on kannatuste põhjustajaks ikkagi see suur ja "tore" maa idas. Kostin geeft geen volledig overzicht van alle feiten, het is eerder een fotografisch verslag met impressies en anekdotes. Historisch uitzonderlijk materiaal, hij was de eerste fotoreporter ter plaatse en is er vaak en lang gebleven. Overigens is zijn levensverhaal, dat hij achteraan het boek meegeeft al even onwaarschijnlijk.
