From his days as a young mercenary to his time as captain of the Band of the Hawks’ Raiders, Guts’s life has been defined by his ability to fight and his will to win. Now cursed with the Brand of Sacrifice — a sigil that will forever mark him as prey for the damned — and with his companions dead, his lover’s mind destroyed and his one-time commander and friend reborn as a malevolent demon lord, it seems that more than ever Guts must rely upon his instinct to survive. But Hell has many faces, and when what appears to be an innocent country village proves to be a den of tragic secrets, the horror of a fairy tale perverted by pain and hate may prove to be more than Guts can handle!

Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.

That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.

In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.

In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.

In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.

Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]

Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.

Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.

I was flipping through the pages, and then i found no more pages...
I was like WHAAAT!!! you can't stop now!
But he did anyway, bad kentaro bad!
This is like the ultimate Bugs nightmare, and the ultimate Children nightmare combined!
It would be accurate if i say, that Kentaro Miura is the writer of nightmares!
His nightmares are worse then hell, way worse Which begs the question, do we have way better ideas at punishing other humans then "gods" have? We have so much evil inside us, that if we let our minds think about Evil, and freakish things, we will never run out of things. (2023 update: in this review i feel like, i don't know the person that is talking, which i am not sure is a bad or a good thing!)
I always wanted to say this, there was no real horses hurt in the making of this manga, then again i have to say now, that there was no real children hurt in the making of this manga.
It was so disturbing seeing these children burn like that, or buried, or anything really, they are children for fuck sake.
So far, i love the lost children chapter, i thought at the beginning that this elf demon, would be like a minor demon, one sweep of the sword, and we would call it a night, but it was much much more than that, a whole arc, and whole group of lackeys, and guardians.
I want to learn more about the holy chain knights in the future, i wonder when they will finally catch up with Guts, they are so near now.

This story arc was alright, even though it had all the makings of "filler". It's difficult to follow up the epic origin story before, but having Guts go up against a horde of killer fairies/bees that used to be disenfranchised village children? Meh - kinda weak. Nevetheless, it was a smooth, mildly entertaining read, although I wish they had just wrapped by the volume's end. Oh well - onwards and upwards!

I like the kind of moral greys where the line between good and evil is blurred a little, where the good guys are flawed and occasionally plain nasty and the bad guys have a spot of kindness and reason to them, but you still know whom to root for. You may understand what drives the villains, but you still want them dead. Berserk pulls it off fine, and perhaps nowhere better than in this arc.

Rosine is cute and personable, has a tragic backstory and genuine friendships, but is also completely off her gourd and really has to die. She doesn't seem to understand the ramifications of her actions - being much too young for it, and having been corrupted with such power at an even younger age - but there's no explaining it to her and no bringing back all those she has already killed. And Guts of course is, well, Guts: he's a murderous berserker that won't stop for anything, but you can see where he's coming from and ultimately, despite everything, want him to prevail.

This was another cool one as we have Guts fighting off those elves-monster hybrid and learn they are human children and learn the whole backstory of what happened to them and how they turned out this way, a slight falling off between Puck and Guts and more stuff happening and maybe Jill (the girl they rescued) getting an offer to turn into an elf and we go to misty valley and see the real horror there and forcing and all and Guts fighting the forest guardians and finally coming there like a monster to face off against these elves-monsters to rescue Jill and Puck! Good volume but it got a bit monotonous towards the end but great art again!

It may just be Berserk fatigue and this being a new story-arc I just didn't feel connected to this story at all. Guts goes after a bunch of demon elves who may just be children manipulated by the demon hand.

SUPER FAST REVIEW:
Unfortunately, this is the weakest volume so far IMO but it’s still pretty good.
So I am still quite interested in this story, the art as always gets better and better, there are some fantastic action scenes too. Very intense. I also like the horror: very interesting and creepy monster designs as well as tons of gore as always.
Unfortunately there was some spoilery stuff I considered slightly creepy in a not horror way. I also didn’t care for some of the directions this plot went (though to be fair there were also some fantastic directions taken so maybe it works out). Oh and I am beginning to get annoyed with Puck (a little comic relief is fine, but in this volume he is focused on so heavily and for what’s meant to be a very dark and intense volume of a series that is known as one of the most fucked up comics ever, it’s weird to focus so much on a comic relief character when we’re 15 volumes deep into the series).
Overall, I still enjoyed this book, it’s interesting. Also the fact that this is the weakest volume of the series so far but it’s still good and volume 15 shows that this series is quality!
So yeah, while this volume was in the good-not-great category IMO, I still liked it and highly recommend the series as a whole.

They weren’t kidding when they said the Lost Children arc was dark. GEEZ.

I know Puck is written into the story for comic relief but this volume really tested my patience in regards to his time on-page. I almost gave this one 4 stars because of him, but Jill’s storyline along with Guts’ white-hot rage in this one brought it back up to 5 for me.

As I mentioned, Guts is P I S S E D in this one, which is really fun to see how that bleeds out into his fights, but it’s also really sad. Some of his actions in this one go from badass to almost truly monstrous; we’re given a glimpse into a man who will do anything to run from his pain. He fights off an army of insect-men in the woods though, which is pretty cool.

Great volume overall, although it was almost overshadowed by Puck’s incessant need to absorb the plot.

I think I've rated every volume so far 5 stars, so why is this volume one less star? Mostly because it didn't do anything new or move the story forward in any meaningful way we haven't seen in previous arcs. You could argue this is better than the Black Swordsman arc, and you'd be right, but the issue is that this covers very similar material to those arcs minus the mystery and world-building. Don't get me wrong, it's still on par with everything else, this volume just happened to catch a slew of chapters that felt transitory, so rating this feels weird, like rating the middle portion of a novel right before the climax. Rating individual volumes of long series can be awkward sometimes, because you gotta take into account what came before while also rating the material presented.

Mild Spoilers Ahead**

Another great volume, however I have to mention how unhappy I am with the representation of females throughout this WHOLE series, the excessive naked body illustrations, the rape (there has been rape in every volume) AND the fact that Guts left 'his love' to fend for herself after being totally mind warped. It's really disappointing to love a series so much, but being so conflicted as to why the author exploits females in such a degrading way IN EVERY SINGLE VOLUME. It's really upsetting, and although I love most of this journey, and I love seeing how far Gut's has come and will continue to go, it plays on my mind all the time...

I loved seeing glimpses of Guts just being a little softie since Jill got introduced in the story, he acts like a monster most of the time but he’s not completely deprived of his humanity. Considering what he went through, this side of him surprises me but I love it.

And Puck’s “𝘼𝙇𝘽𝘼𝙏𝙍𝙊𝙎𝙎 𝘾𝙃𝙊𝙋” killed me lmfao

Although many of the reviews of this volume rank it as a three or four, citing a "slower pace" or a "disappointing departure" from the epic scope of the previous arc, I am finding the "Lost Children" storyline to be highly compelling, and this volume in particular raises disturbing questions about the options available to children of poor communities and what it means to break free from abuse.

This volume plays out like a beautiful and horrific fairytale, in which Jill, a young girl, is lured into the forest by fairies looking for a new companion. The fairies are led by a girl who used to live in the nearby war-torn, poverty-stricken little village, a girl who gave up her past life in order to live freely in the woods, like a Lost Boy. Jill is faced with a dilemma: return home to her abusive, drunk father and her apathetic mother, to a town with no prospects where she will most likely become just like her parents, or abandon that life to live with the "elves" of the forest, who are free to fly and eat what they want (including humans), but whose "games" mimic the brutality they learned from adult humans.

The fact that this is even a choice that Jill has to seriously consider is one of the tragic parts of this volume. The mentality of the elves is so sinister, the option shouldn't be as compelling as it is. This is the fairytale equivalent of runaway girls who would rather demean themselves for the "freedom" they desire than face the abuse and disinterest of a terrible home life, a parallel that makes this volume even more meaningful and terrifying.

There is one disturbing scene in particular in which one elf performs an "adult attack" on another elf, and we see children abusing children, "playing" out the abuses they have seen performed by their adult relatives. Children mimic learned behavior, and this volume graphically depicts the dehumanization of parental abuse and neglect. That is why I think that this arc, and this volume in particular, is a fascinating storyline, and I hope that Miura continues to explore interesting themes that play off of traditional folk legends.

Miura can get surprisingly subtle when describing the ambivalence and ambiguity of ethical choices. This volume, with its unflinching depiction of horrors visited by the strong on the weak, is all the more poignant for the small, almost intimate scale of events. By making children the protagonists of the story Miura achieves an almost universal feeling of unfairness, of terrible choices being made as a result of other terrible choices. There are no good guys here, and the bad guys are all the more horrifying because they are initially almost indistinguishable from the rest - dumb, egoistic, abusive, finding pleasure in the suffering of others but always beyond closed doors, always ready with justifications and excuses. In all of that, Guts is torn between trying to do the right thing and attempting to break the vicious circle of abuse - doing his best (which was never too good) not to lash out and spread his own misery and suffering.

This one has always felt a little 'filler' but the art carries it once again. Also someone kill Puck. I'm begging you.

Reread update:

Changed my opinion on this one now that I`ve read through it again. This is an important act in the overall Conviction arc. It`s great and I was a big fat dummy head. Dare I say it, I don't even mind Puck that much anymore. (At least in this arc. When he becomes meme chestnut Puck, then I still want him to burn. He ruins so much of the manga. But early Puck is actually okay).

HONESLTY TIRED of the edgy emo part of the fandom going "harhar Guts is soooo heartless and emotionless, literally me" when Guts just had to realize maybe HE DID let the shot go to protect the kid, he still made sure the boy got out alive, etc. Like. Just. Let characters be insane and still have depth. <3
