The Whims of Hate

Rate this book
Oliver is left for dead in the ruins of his underground city. The love of his life has betrayed him and disappeared with his devil. His dark blood slowly flows out of his veins, stripping his electricity away, while a creature of legend destroys his dream. Death cannot come soon enough.

And yet, it’s not death that finds him first, but the beautiful man he had taken prisoner just the day before. Jude has a plan to escape the underground city and survive, and he’ll let nothing—or no one—stand in his way.

Oliver will be swept away by the hateful young man and dragged to the harsh life in the wastelands once again, where men have turned into monsters and the old gods rule over all.

He will learn that Hate is just Love’s jealous companion, and that Jude is a foe he might not want to vanquish.

The Whims of Hate is the the second book in the Monstrous Whims series by Mell R. Bright.

I knew I would devour this one, too! Another fast paced adventure I couldn’t put down.

I mean hate to love plus a redemption arc? What more is there to want? But please grab book one first, otherwise the redemption will probably fall very flat for you. *lol

It’s only a matter of time before one of us kills the other.

I can’t say exactly why but I somehow had a soft spot for Oliver since book one and with spitfire Jude popping up at the last minute I had a feeling their story had a lot of potential. Even more because their hate, especially Jude’s for Oliver (god, he was so vicious) was real and not dissolved thirty pages into the story.

It broke my heart for Oliver when he realized that Helios (mc from book #1) regarded the relationship they once had so very differently than he had. That he’s the monster of Helios’ story. It breaks him, like he has been broken many times before in his life.

His romance with Jude evolves slowly but their dynamic is so thrilling you can’t stop watching in anticipation for it to change. And they were hot together!

We’re two hateful bastards, starved for touch. I’m the monster nobody can love, and he’s the jellyfish that stings anyone who gets close.

Again, amazing story-telling, vividly described world, plot and characters which I find impressive for a novella that doesn’t really feel like one even if the pleasure of reading these books is short lived. And man, it ended too soon!

Still, highly recommended.
I can’t wait for The Whims of Love as it promises to be another enticing story.

side note: This is not some crazy monster porn. The “monsters” in these books are humans with monstrous mutations from lab experiments. The animals on the covers do not represent the mutations but stand for something important in the stories.

After what went down with Oliver in book 1, I was skeptical that he could be redeemed. However, Mell Bright hit me right in the feelings early on with Oliver's chilling dreams of his childhood, helping to show why he is the way he is, and by the end he's redeemed in a satisfying way. He and Jude are at each other's throats early on, and their enemies-to-lovers journey was intense (and steamy). Oliver is a flawed and complicated person, seems easily influenced by those he cares for, and is quick to jump to violence. His bloodthirst is tempered as the story progresses, and slowly shifts into protectiveness and a willingness to burn the world down for Jude. We saw him as a monster with Helios in book 1, but he's not just a monster. Similarly, Jude is more than the prickly captor threatening Oliver at the beginning, or the sweet friend he was to Helios in book 1. From a rocky start, Oliver and Jude grow to work so well together. Here are a couple passages I loved where Oliver compares them:

"His hatred is strangely casual and familiar, as if it’s something he’s used to. Something he has tamed. Mine has always been a wild thing."

"We’re two hateful bastards, starved for touch. I’m the monster nobody can love, and he’s the jellyfish that stings anyone who gets close. Thankfully, I’m immune to his venom."

This book was fast paced, and action packed. There was a ton of (quick) physical travel between landmarks to progress the story, and more side characters introduced than in book 1 (plus some familiar faces). Oliver and Jude's story felt complete, but I am still left wanting more and for the book to be longer so we can see more of this fascinating world. I am already looking forward to book 3 with Stellan and Perri!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author, and this is my honest review.

Pretty solid redemption book

I'd give it like a 4.4 or so. I liked a lot of aspects of this book, though there were a few things I didn't love, but could look over.
I feel like my main complaint is that this book is so short. A few scenes here and there could've been more detailed to give the book a bit more. But overall I enjoyed this book, and would reccomend if you want a quick romance read with some spice and angst and a HEA

This was such an amazing sequel! I was a little nervous I wouldn’t like Oliver’s story, but I was pleasantly surprised. Loved being back in this world and getting to see more of it.
Also the cover! It means so much more after reading this book ❤️
Excited for the next one! 😊

We’re two hateful bastards, starved for touch. I’m the monster nobody can love, and he’s the jellyfish that stings anyone who gets close.”

I said before Mell is climbing my list of favorite authors — and The Whims Of Hate made that ring true even more.

Oliver is a mutant climbing from the depths of hatred and learning he doesn’t have to live life believing he can’t be happy. And, Jude, in turn is learning he doesn’t have to run when things get too close for comfort for him.

You have two characters who want to kill one another like they need to breathe but after time spent being forced together lust starts to swirl into that hate. It’s a steady, slow thing — but it’s done so beautifully.

Mell has written such a gorgeous story filled with enemies to lovers, forced proximity, tons of adventure and two snarky bastards getting their happy ever after. This was a perfect second installment to this book and I am so excited for book three!!

Hold on for the ride!

All the stars for Oliver & Jude’s journey through the wastelands! This trope, enemies to lovers always have the most hard-won endings. Loved this a little bit more than the first book! One fast-paced-brings-you-through-the-wringer story that’ll eat you up and spit you aching with sweetness on the other side. So good! Looking forward to more books in this new world and I hope the third book is right around the corner.

Oh gosh I absolutely devoured this book. It's was freaking phenomenal!! Mell just has an absolute way with words, the world building and story telling are top notch and the spice is top tier!

This is definitely a redemption story and a true enemies to lovers, they legit threaten to kill each other every 5 minutes in the beginning 🤣

I buddy read this ARC with Lulu and our voice messages were just crazy squeals of delight, giggles and discussion of the excellent spice 🌶

I cannot wait for book 3 in this series which will be MMM!

Okay so I was really, REALLY not sure if Oliver could come back from book one, but he did. PERIOD! I down rated it a little bit because we sort of just kind of slid past some of his past crimes, but you really do learn more about him and what sort of TERRIBLE environment he was raised in. 😭

Also Jude was just like exactly what Oliver needed to snap into shape! I sort of wish that there was scene between Oliver and Helios, just for some sort of apology conversation to have occurred. 🤔But I get it and I think Mell Bright's way of doing it was just fine! I kind of wished too that Oliver had more of a physical description, because I can honestly say (aside from a certain male part) I kind of forgot what he is suppose to look like!🤣

I am very impressed with the writing and am loving to see Mell Bright come into the scene more!😍

Like the first one I wish it was longer, book 2 was even shorter but I loved it. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and it was done flawlessly! I loved Jude & Oliver’s dynamics & the much steamier steam. I hope book 3 is more of the same I can’t wait for Stellan & Perris story ❤️

Did someone say REDEMPTION ARC!! Pleaseee since Oliver was introduced in book 1 all I could think about was he need his own story and I’m so glad he got one!

The master/pet role I did not see coming but it suits them so well, shame we didn’t get to see him in a collar and leash 👉👈

The epilogue was needed I know it will take time for the others to forgive him but I would love to see a (longer) interaction between them all hopefully in the future.

I’m shocked that Oliver actually had such a good redemption story and I think it was very well done, one of the best I’ve read. Oliver and Jude were a great combo together and this book really focused on the companionship/romance aspect more than the first. Good for different reasons and it’s a totally different vibe than the first book

Fantastic! Loved it!

This is an absolutely fantastic continuation to the Monstrous Whims series!! I swore after the first book Mell could NOT convince me to like Oliver. Ever. Well, guess what, I was WRONG.

The dynamic in this book was a complete surprise, and I loved it! Jude is such a BAMF, and we learned so much about him! I’m not sure I’ve ever read a better enemies to lovers! They hated one another into loving each other!

The more I learn about the scientists who created the mutants I hate them more and more. You can clearly see between each book how the theory/argument of nature vs nurture played out. These individuals (so far) are a product of their upbringing and their environment. Oliver in particular had a terrible childhood full of torture and experimentation and devoid of live and nurturing. It in no way excuses how he acts but he is very different to Griffin whose childhood was nearly the exact opposite. I really feel for the mutants, beings created for a specific purpose and abandoned when the results didn’t pan out.

Jude has a core of steel. Born into an absolutely ruthless family and seemingly unanimously hated, Jude had to learn pretty quickly how to survive against all odds. What an excellent character. He may be the only person alive who could tame Oliver, his perfect match. They are so hot together, lemme tell ya!

What a great series, truly a hidden gem! I can’t wait to have the physical copy in my hands!

TW: blood, violence, toxic relationships (that become healthy), explicit sex scenes, death, and SA.

He’s a fucking nightmare. So beautiful and yet dangerous to touch, like the jellyfish that haunt my dreams…

The Whims of Hate is the second installment in the Monstrous Whims series. This book was DARK and really emotional. There’s a beautiful redemption arc for the villain and he’s able to find his own version of love. This book gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!

This book picks up right after the climax of book one. Oliver, the villain and ex of Helios (the human MC of book 1), is left for dead after his fight with Griffin. However, the human who managed to escape with Helios, Jude, comes along and saves Oliver.

These two are evil. Truly evil. They’re using one another for their own gain. Oliver needs time to heal and Jude only needs him so the ship he stole will work. They’re so mean to one another, but their darkness calls to one another. Jude definitely surprised me with how horrid he was to Oliver. Over time their hate turns into something more. They eventually realize they just work together. It’s not a perfect match, but they love each other in their own twisted way.

Oliver gets an amazing redemption arc. I really hated him in book 1. During this book you get a deep dive into his childhood and how he was shaped to be a villain. He uses his time with Jude to truly reflect on his life and even how he treated Helios. He acknowledges his flaws and mistakes and vows to be better. He knows he can never take back what happened, but wants to use the dark urges he holds inside to right the wrongs of the world. To try and restore some semblance of peace in their dystopian world.

Please check the TW/CW. This book is DARK and the MC’s are not gentle or kind to one another for most of the book.

'I drop to my knees in the dust and hug his thighs. I don't care if the entire world sees me like this. They could make a painting of me at Jude's feet, and I would pay good money to put it up for all to see'

Good lord did this book put me through it. I mean I knew I was gonna feel bad for Oliver but I wasn't anticipating how much he'd win me over. He just wanted love so badly but didn't know how to get it. Of course he did bad things and shouldn't be let off the hook, but that little kid no one wanted curled up in my heart and I just wanted to cry for him. I kept telling myself, he'll be happy by the end of the book just hang in there 😂

I know he was attracted to Helios because of how sweet and caring he was, but I feel like Jude is such a better fit in a partner for him. Oliver needs someone who can keep up with his sharp teeth and bloody knuckles. They're so good together, two broken boys reluctantly slapping duct tape over each other's bleeding hearts... a little violently but it's the thought that counts lol

Even though this one is also relatively short, we get to see lots more of this captivating and savage world with new characters and plenty old gods to run from. If you venture into these wastes, you're gonna get obsessed with them and the monsters who call it home, it's just that kind of story. From endlessly burning cities to small quirky outposts the remnants of the US are woven into a battleground for the ferocious survivors and the gods who hunt them. It's a cool concept y'all, plain and simple.

Rest assured the romance is good too, there are just a lot of other interesting parts to these books which is one of the reasons I like them so much. This one is way more gritty than the first relationship wise (check the tw), kinda comes with the territory with Jude and Oliver. I feel like an easy romance wouldn't have suited either of them. By far my fav part was when they decided to be otters and float down the river with Jude on Oliver's chest lol, but the first time Jude called Oliver baby was a close second 😭

The Whims Of Hate presents an enthralling enemies-to-lovers dystopian romance that takes readers on a profound emotional rollercoaster. At the heart of this narrative is Oliver, a mutant with the electrifying ability to control electricity, a skill he uses to navigate a world where survival often means eliminating threats before they can eliminate you. His life takes an unexpected turn when Jude, seemingly an enemy, daringly rescues him from the brink of death. This act of selflessness challenges everything Oliver knows about survival, suggesting that not all conflicts require a fatal resolution. The evolution from adversaries to lovers between Oliver and Jude is marked by escalating sexual tension and a series of emotional highs and lows that vividly illustrate the transformative power of love. Through their journey, the story beautifully underscores how compassion and understanding can change the course of lives, even in the most unforgiving of worlds.

This was so good! A perfect sequel. I loved how Jude and Oliver started out just absolutely hating each other and waiting for the opportunity to kill each other. The progression to their relationship ramps up perfectly. It was interesting that the book is in Oliver's perspective, which definitely helped with his redemption.

I'm not usually one for villain redemption arcs but this was different. Oliver's past actions weren't brushed under the rug for the sake of love. He slowly becomes aware of the monster that he became for Helios and starts to feel a lot of guilt for it. Jude forgives him for almost killing him but doesn't allow Oliver to forget what he's done.

I loved the plot and all the drama with Jude's family as well as the little cameos with Helios and Griffin. I can't wait for the next one with Stellan and Perri!

Author, I am sorry that I ever doubted that you could redeem the vengeful, obsessive, power-hungry, narcissistic mass murderer that is Oliver. And you reallllllllly did. From his almost comical lack of will to live to his begrudging curiosity, you SOMEHOW made us love him. Oh man I love this mega-evil power couple. When I grow up, I want to be Jude for sure. Also, thee world building was so much fun.

Redemption arc done well

Wasn't sure what to expect after meeting Oliver in the first book but really enjoyed this. The back story really set the scene and allowed you to root for Oliver. Might have been nice to get an epilogue or such from Jude but overall great read.

For the redemption only this book deserves 5 stars. I thought there was no way the author could redeem Oliver but wow they did 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I loved that the grittier aspects of life was shown. I had a little bit of trouble with theway Jude&Oliver were in the beginning (I hate hate-sex) but that’s purely me and has nothing to do with the story (I loved how they were at the end byw)

5/5 Slaps

Welcome to book 2 of the Monstrous Whims. This is Oliver's redemption story.
All through The Whims of Gods we were led to hate Oliver for his monstrous actions and atrocious handling of our sweet baby Helios. While I agree wholeheartedly that Oliver was a holy terror in Book 1. There was a specific line he said in book one that made me whimper and cry for him. One line that swept what I KNEW of Oliver completely away.

"I was a fool and a child"
"And so was I, when you abandoned me."
🔪🪼🔪🪼🔪🪼🔪🪼🔪🪼🔪🪼🔪🪼🔪

This book is an exceptional addition to this series. Not only does it give us more backstory via snippets in the beginning of the chapters but is loaded with character backstory and more on the Revival project. We already know mutants all have different god DNA which makes them act in various ways. But this book in particular really shows how damaged mentally and psychologically some of the mutants are due to being mistreated by their scientists. A lot of them don't know kindness or how to deal with a soft touch. And while Jude is anything but soft, he is a very good judge of character.
Oliver and Jude's relationship starts off with a fight to the literal death in Book 1. In book 2 these two heavily damaged men have to start again and that begins and ends in fire ;) (iykyk).

This is a heavy enemies-to-lovers. With that comes a lot of self reflection for Oliver through the entire book. Whether it's Jude being very blunt about Oliver's abuse of Helios, how Oliver was an obsessive tyrant and ultimately Jude starting to trust Oliver. Survivors know each other without a single word. It's their actions and emotions. Oliver HAS the emotions to prove he isn't a lost cause.

Their tension as a couple was *chef kiss*. It developed so well over the book and I believe that has to do with their personalities as people. While Jude is achingly beautiful, he isn't weak and he doesn't take shit from anyone. Especially Oliver. Also, I love a good hate-f*ck ;)

They gain traction as a couple when they can share their extremely vulnerable moments. In this case, Jude's past comes back to meet them. While Oliver's was the fall of his Bunker city & his character evolution/ redemption.

The entire book is multiple power shifts from all directions, some good and some bad. We meet more old gods, tyrant mutants, murderous humans, old friends and more of the wastes.

If a redemption arc is turning you away from this book. Give it a chance. Give Oliver the chance to do better. He isn't forgiven totally for what he has done, but he is putting in the work and balanced out perfectly with Jude. Plus the spicy scenes in this book are wet, messy and so so hot.

The Whims of Hate || Mell R Bright

We pick up from the end of book 2 in Bunkertown. Jude, who was enslaved takes the dying Oliver aboard the Firefly and keeps him alive - as the Firefly’s AI, Fyfe, only responds to Oliver’s voice.

They head to a hacker Jude knows to reprogram Fyfe to obey Jude, so he can ‘dispatch’ of Oliver - who he hates for leasing the slave trade and abusing his new friend Helios (from Book 1). Unfortunately they are run off from Jude’s hacker friend and are caught in the crosshairs of a battle and damage the Firefly so he goes to a mechanic to get it fixed. All the while, Oliver is getting better and gains his electricity power back slowly - and ki|ls Jude’s brother who is attempting to ki|l Jude.

“He’s craving it as much as I do; there’s no denying it. We’re two hateful bästards, starved for touch. I’m the monster nobody can love, and he’s the jellyfish that stings anyone who gets close.”

Once the ship is repaired they head to another hacker. Along the way there is some not nice abuse from Jude to Oliver - even though they both ‘kind of’ like it. They slowly start learning more about each others pasts in snippets along the way, the abuse in their childhood and the way Oliver viewed his relationship with Helios - he thought it was love and is devastated to hear that isn’t what Helios thought.

The new world has turned them both into different people, worn them down and kicked them. But the two form an unlikely bond and a truce so Jude can save his friend. This builds into a budding romance with them both letting their walls down enough to let each other in, helping saving each other.

“Jude has taken the broken monster that I was and brought him back to life.”

This was such a fun addition to this series and I look forward to more!

His hatred is strangely casual and familiar, as if it's something he's used to. Something he has tamed. Mine has always been a wild thing.

I am screaming internally right now. When I found out the next book in Monstrous Whims was enemies to lovers, I was beyond stoked. I adore Griffin and Helios but enemies to lovers will always be my kryptonite.

And this is one of the books I'll use as an example when telling people about a perfect (to me) enemies to lovers. It's gritty and aggressive and breathtakingly sexy. There's no moment of "I hate him - oh wait no the sun is hitting his face just right and actually I'm in love with him now" as some books so unfortunately have, making the transition between enemies to lovers feel instant and forced. The development of Jude and Olivier's relationship feels organic and is also insanely hot. The smut really kicked up a notch in this installment in the series, and bless Mell for that because it's fantastic.

Jude is unreasonably sexy. His looks, his attitude, his competence as a fighter - how could Oliver NOT fall for him? Similarly, Oliver is a refreshing twist on a tortured character who regrets their actions, still maintaining his personality without being reduced to Hot Brooding Guy #10973. The character development was aces on both sides.

If you're not already convinced to read this book, I would just like to offer my closing statement: self-lubricating monster 🍆
