Family traditions become established, sometimes quite by accident and sometimes because “we’ve always done it that way.” But the best family traditions are thoughtfully cultivated. With Cultivating Advent Traditions with Handel’s Messiah , Cindy Rollins leads the way in building a rich Advent tradition for you and your family. Inside you will Cindy also invited four of her friends to share how they celebrate Advent with their own families. Hallelujah will be a special part of your Advent season.
A really neat book, full of Christmas poems, carols, and recipes, as well as suggestions on how to create individualized advent traditions. It is not incredibly profound: more of an introduction to the celebration of Advent and what that can look like. Divided into four sections (week 1: Remembering Prophecy, week 2: Remembering Place, week 3: Remembering the People Waiting for Christ, and week 4: Remembering the Future), she strategically places short essays, suggestions, and poems that correspond with that topic.
The book also guides listeners through a day song from Handel’s Messiah, providing lyrics and little key details in understanding how the music interplays with the lyrics. I’ve grown to appreciate not just the songs and music, but also its ability to take me through Christ’s life and prepare my heart to sing “Hallelujah.” I had never before experienced the beauty of this entire piece, and now I can say I truly love Handel’s Messiah—it’s absolutely beautiful and delightful. I doubt I would have listened to it in its entirety without this book’s prompting.
“Listening to the entirety of Messiah allows for the richness of the person and work of Christ to fill this holiday season with the glory of the Gospel, the promise of redemption, and the anticipation of both the first and second comings of Christ.”
Now that I'm a full time stay at home mom, we've been working hard the last few years to establish beautiful traditions in our home that I didn't feel were possible when I was homeschooling and working full time. Cindy Rollins's books have helped me be far more organized at how I go about it. I'm thoroughly looking forward to using the Hallelujah plans this Christmas and hope to made it an annual tradition in our home.
