What really happened to Sara-Jane?

It’s been fifteen years since Gem’s eight-year-old daughter Sara-Jane went missing, snatched with her best friend Abby right outside their school. A frantic search united the community at first, but after Abby was found and brought home, single mother Gem’s dogged persistence only led to accusations that she was stirring up class tensions. Even that she was somehow involved.

When Gem hears that human remains have been unearthed in the school’s chapel, she casts aside the new life she’s carefully built around herself and returns to the community that closed ranks against her all those years ago. Someone there knows something, she’s sure of it. And when Sara-Jane’s belongings start appearing on her doorstep, Gem knows she’s getting close—dangerously close—to the truth.

One thing’s for certain: it’s not just the remains in the chapel that have lain hidden for years. Can Gem unravel the dark secrets that might lead to Sara-Jane? Or has blind hope lured her into a web she’ll never escape?

Absolutely awful. Such poor writing and so repetitive and it doesn’t matter how many times a point is hammered home I feel no tension whatsoever. Life’s too short to read tripe so onwards and upwards.

Scrolling through my Kindle looking for something to read, I came across Girl Missing. This worked for me as it was not only a thriller that sounded interesting, but being Black History Month, I do love to spotlight black authors and Dreda Say Mitchell falls into that category. The book which I think is set in the UK as it did have that feeling starts with Gem Casey who is now a successful businesswoman receiving an award when a news alert goes off. There have been remains found at her daughter's old school that look like they have been there a long time. Gem rushes in the hope she might be able to finally get closure as fifteen years ago when her daughter was eight years old she was kidnapped alongside Abby Prentice but only Abby came home. Sara-Jane was never seen again. As the book moves along, Gem starts to receive a few items in the mail anonymously that belonged to Sara-Jane on the last day that Gem saw her. Is someone teasing her and where is Sara-Jane? The bones turn out to be someone else's but still connected and a huge conspiracy at the school is uncovered and secrets people have been trying to hide for fifteen years are coming to the surface. Is Sara-Jane alive? Will Gem get closure? In one way I did enjoy the twist at the end but at the same time was disappointed when the truth about Sara-Jane was revealed as I would assume even if I vanished, my parents would still have some idea what I would look like as an adult - well you would hope. Due to the ending, the rating for me has been rolled down to 4 stars as readers of my reviews will know that I am a real "ending" type of girl and for me, an ending can make or break the story. In saying that, I am interested to read any other mysteries that Dreda Say Mitchell and Ryan Carter release as I did enjoy this book as missing children is one of my favourite thriller tropes without sounding like a weird creepy reader.

This was my Amazon First Reads pick for May. It was very compelling as the authors portray a mother who has yearned for her missing child for 15 years. I read it in one sitting. That's why it is going to get a 2-star.

But I agree with my fellow reviewers that some of the novel's writing was choppy. Not to mention that the author had her main character running around hysterical, trying to find out information, when it was very clear to me, the reader, whodunit. It is one of those books where the cops are completely useless and the ending is anticlimactic.

I also have to share this tiny conversation between Gem( the main protagonist) and Abby( who as a little girl was kidnapped alongside Gem's daughter Sara Jane and escaped).

One night, when I was thirteen,’ she informs me, ‘I went to bed a little itty-bitty thing and woke up the next morning as tall as a beanstalk.’ Her voice lowers. ‘I suppose I take after my mother in more ways than one.

Who speaks in such a manner? Especially a grown woman? 🤷‍♀️😒

What a jumbled mess.

I managed to ALMOST finish this book, just to see if I actually had it figured out (I had), but confess I began skimming pages less than halfway through. All the characters seemed to suffer from seesawing emotions that turned on a dime, and Gem’s incessant inner dialogue was nothing but annoying, as was the constant reminder how much she missed her beloved daughter.
In many instances it was almost as though each author wrote their own chapter without reading what the other had written; connections were forced and in some cases ridiculous.
Remind me to read the reviews BEFORE I choose a Prime First Read again!

I DNF this after reading three chapters. The narration was bad and the grammar worse. IE, ‘a number of parents have expressed concerned’. Coming from reading Les Miserables probably meant I was hoping for the same standard of prose but this book was sadly lacking. I could have tried to read on but fear I would have become more annoyed with the narrative. Also, why waste time on something that doesn’t grab you when there are hundreds of great books out there.

This book follows a mother, Gem, whose daughter and her daughters friend went missing 15 years ago. Only one girl comes back, and Gem is left struggling to live her live her life and find a way to understand why her daughter never came back.

I found this book very quick to read but unfortunately didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped to.

This author does a fantastic job of showing the differences between social classes of the families that attended her daughters school. It also showed some of the prejudices people have towards single mothers, which I felt was portrayed very delicately and effectively. However, i found the unwarranted hatred towards Gem from the community hard to believe, and it stopped me from becoming properly engaged with the book.

I genuinely enjoyed some of the twists this book threw at me, but some of the twists towards the end did feel like they were only written for the shock value and were a bit unbelievable. They didn't add much to the story for me and instead pulled me out of what could have been a great ending.

Unfortunately, i found some of the characters very unrelatable, personally, and therefore found it hard to care about what happened to them. The way some of the characters responded to situations to be unrealistic and whilst the author makes some attempt to explain the reasonings behind these responses, this (I found) was often poorly articulated. I found the reveal of information that was being alluded to, to be very slow and I was left feeling lost at times.

While this book was not personally for me, I feel it would suit someone who enjoys a slower burn of mystery.

This book was given to me by netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

A twisted tale of power and wealth that sees eight year old Sara-Jane abducted with her friend Abby. When Abby is found but Sara-Jane is still missing her mums plight to find her daughter is relentless. Fifteen years on the skeletal remains of someone are found in the school chapel from where Sara-Jane was taken so her mum returns to her home town hoping they are not the remains of her daughter. As she digs deeper into the past she uncovers truths that will haunt her.

Told on two timelines of then and now this is an easy read with a believable storyline

Thank you to NetGalley the author and publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review

A crime story full of intrigue.

A beautiful tale of a mother mourning the loss of her eight-year-old daughter kidnapped fifteen years ago. The plot is skillfully revealed by alternating between the past and the present. Villains and unsavourable characters abound as the mother seeks to find her little girl. Or at least her remains.

It is an emotional story with several twists that immerse the reader in the novel.

The writing was very poor. The story was interesting enough that I wanted to know the outcome. I guessed who the perpetrators were about 1/2 way through and wanted to see if I was right. I skimmed through all the ridiculous sex, sadism, murder scenes to get to the resolution. I’m being generous with 3 stars…

If I was giving an award for the worst book I’ve ever read, this book would be right up there in the top 3, maybe even the top spot!

It is truly appalling with stilted, unconvincing prose and dialogue. The plot isn’t remotely believable, predominantly because of the shockingly bad writing, there are literally no redeeming qualities.

I’m astounded at some of the other star ratings given to this book🤔. If I could give zero stars I would!

Sometimes, there are too many suspects. This story could have been great, but seemed quite convoluted.
As I read closer to the end, I began to think that there were 2 authors. Things became confusing, and so many grammar mistakes, primarily “me and Andrea” went here or did that. Lo and behold, 2 authors!

I was given this book through Netgalley.

This is one of those cases in which "I really wanted to like this book because of its premise, but it just wasn't for me".

I gave this book a 2 star rating because: (1) Some of the twists of the book were very hard to believe, especially the one concerning the headmaster (if you know, you know!); (2) The ending was very hard to accept; (3) Going from first to third person broke off the rhythm of the book (I would have preferred if the authors had stuck to either or); (4) The hatred towards Gem, by the community, seems very disproportionate; (5) Some characters responded to situations in a very unrealistic way; (6) There were a lot of spelling mistakes, words missing, which made me annoyed at the book.

While this book was not personally for me, I always like to state that this is MY OPINION, and that this book might be a 5 star read for someone else! We all have different tastes, and that is the beauty of it!

This book was given to me pre-publication in exchange for an unbiased review.

I had high hopes for this book, as the blurb promised an interesting read. The basic story is okay, but there are so many innaccuracies regarding school policies and procedures which, as an ex-teacher- I couldn't ignore; especially as two of these blow the plot wide open. The book then becomes a tedious web of ridiculousness!
A school's results are not moderated by a single person, let alone one connected to the school. Moderators do not do that for a living, it is part of another job. No headteacher would resort to the level of stupidity portrayed here, just because the SATs results took a dip.
It isn't even particularly well written. The characters are stereotypical, unpleasant and unbelieveable. The number of times Gem said, 'My Sarah-Jane' was grating.

i’m going to be honest, this is the worst book i’ve read. and i’ve read a lot of colleen hoover. this book had lots of grammatical errors that i feel could have been avoided. it started off super slow, however the second half of the book was very rushed. it felt like the author wanted to create those unsuspecting twists that we all love, but they turned into super jumbled messes that didn’t make sense. it quite literally felt like i read two different books. overall, i would not recommend it but i’m not mad because it was free on amazon

Reading a couple of reviews I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy Girl, Missing as much as this dastardly duos previous collaborations but I did. This is the fifth psychological thriller written by Dreda Say Mitchell and Ryan Carter, I'm hoping that we don't have too long of a wait for the next one.

There was things I liked and things I didn't about this plot but overall it did make for a good read. The plot for Girl, Missing centres around two schoolgirls, Abby and Sarah-Jayne who were from opposite sides of the track so to speak, girls who formed an unlikely friendship which abruptly ended when one of the girls goes missing,. One of the things I loved was the way that the divide didn't matter a whit to the two girls friendship.,

While reading there was one thing that I couldn't quite work out was why the natives disliked Gem so much as when all said and done she is the mother of a missing child, Sarah-Jayne. You would've thought they would want to support her on both occasions, the first being the disappearance and then the new discovery all these years later. I did wonder if a lot of the reasoning that folk didn't like her when she came back fifteen years later was a good old fashioned case of jealousy due to her making something of herself from next to nothing.

As the book progressed I began to have a glimmer of an idea what had ultimately happened with regards to her daughter. Although not everything made sense until the authors played out the final scenes of the plot. The sparks that seemingly flew between Gem and A Another felt a little off to me, I understood the need for physical contact but the person it was with seemed wrong to me (no idea why). I felt so very sorry for her at one point, after letting her guard down she must've been devastated to discover that she had been lied to and deceived to such an extent.

Thanks to the authors, Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC. All reviews and opinions are mine and mine alone.

This book has such an interesting premise - Gem's daughter Sara-Jane disappeared with her friend from the chapel at her primary school fifteen years ago. Abby, the friend, returned home, but not Sara-Jane. When human remains are discovered in the chapel, Gem returns to the town she had turned her back on after the community had accused her of harming her daughter.

I liked the character of Gem and her determination to learn the truth. The book does a good job of showing the conflicts between the working class and the well-to-do families whose children all went to the same private school. The book is suspenseful and keeps you guessing as to what really happened to Sara-Jane. Unfortunately, the book turns from simply having a tense, foreboding mood to having more over-the-top, dark events. There are several hateful characters doing horrific things, but you're not sure which ones, if any, have to do with Sara-Jane's disappearance. The disturbing elements of the book took away from the parts I enjoyed, so it evened out to be a 3-star read for me.

I received an advance copy of this ebook from NetGalley and Amazon Publishing at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

Fifteen years ago, Gem’s daughter, eight-year-old Sara-Jane, and her friend, Abby, were kidnapped after bunking off school.

When Gem hears that human bones have been found in the school chapel, she rushes back to the place she fled from, needing to know if they are her daughter’s bones.

As the story progresses, we learn about what went on fifteen years ago, as well as what is happening now.

The story has many secrets and lies, and Gem has to get to the truth in a hope to find out what happened to her daughter.

An intriguing thriller, I liked how the story brings in the differences of people’s class and how they are perceived if they are of a lower class.

I didn’t like Gem’s ex (Sara-Jane’s dad) at all. He was a vile and vindictive character. I had a lot of time for Gem, she has been strong for fifteen years and will never let go of finding out the truth about her daughter.

My thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

15 years ago Gem’s daughter Sara-Jane was kidnapped along with her best friend Abby outside their school. Abby returned and the disappearance of Sara-Jane still remains a mystery. In the present day, human remains have been unearthed under the school’s chapel.

Thank you Dreda and Ryan for a copy of your latest book!

This is one of the twistiest books I have ever read! What a page turner 😱😱 There was never a dull moment and I was kept on the edge of my seat for the entire read.

The plot and the narrative has been really well worked through and the attention to detail is impeccable!

Well, the story lived up its premise, that for sure. Do you ever feel like you just need one more chapter.. yes, this book ended too soon. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I admired Gems strength, her determination to find her daughter, or to get some answers as to what happened that awful day. She has so much courage. Her ex, on the other hand, was an awful character. He was manipulative and sly, and although I didn't like him, he definitely added that extra ounce of mysteriousness to the storyline.

It was interesting how the story played out, especially as the author bought the two different classes, so we saw how each side was treated depending on where they lived and how much money they had in their pockets.

I had so many theories enter my head throughout the whole book, and although I had an inkling of how the end may play out, I wasn't on the mark.

Overall, it is a fast-paced thriller that definitely gets your brain working. Thank you to the author, Publisher, and Tandem Collective for a copy of the book and a spot on the readalong.

3.5

2.5 - for the actual writing
3 - for a detail that is discovered at the end that just doesn’t seem possible to overlook as a mother.
4.5 - for the twists and keeping me guessing on who actually did it. was slow reading in the beginning but I flew through the last half of the book.

So many plot holes. Sara-Jane’s abduction and her mom Gem’s subsequent 15 year search for her, should have left my heart aching, but instead left me annoyed by the terrible writing, the repetitive phrasing, and the terrible ending. I do not recommend.
