Stardew Valley dev has no objections to any fan modifications, although he did express one reservation.

Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone in an interview for PC Gamer magazine (via GamesRadar) stated that he isn't even bothered by mods that expand the game's story. Besides, the developer also used the support of moderators. Suffice it to remember FlashShifter, the creator of Stardew Valley Expanded, who also helped with the big update 1.6.

However, the American stressed that only the basic version of the game is "canonical," and no one should consider the story from the mods as an actual part of the narrative. Barone wants to make sure that players are aware of what is the official version of the story, and what is just a fan-made addition.

Likely for the same reason, the dev advised a couple of weeks ago that after the release of version 1.6, players should play a session without mods. Naturally, he was also concerned with the game mechanics and additional gameplay features. Nonetheless, the idea that players should be aware of which changes are "official" and which are brought by fan mods, also fits into Barone's appeal regarding the plot.

The 1.6 update is still not available on consoles and mobile devices. The developer has assured that he is doing his best to ensure that the patch debuts on these platforms as quickly as possible. More updates for the PC edition of SV are also on the way.
